As per usual, half the punctuation is missing because of crappy OCR, but even worse, every single one of the full line breaks which indicate a scene change are systematically removed. So you read a line of dialogue and then the very next line is being said hours later, or in a different frame of reference, etc., and doesn't make sense until you think about it a minute and realize that there used to be a visual indication of the frame shift which has been removed because Amazon churns out shoddy product and charges full price for it.

“Signature smell of the Sprawl, a rich amalgam of stale subway exhalations, ancient soot, and the carcinogenic tang of fresh plastics, all of it shot through with the carbon edge of illicit fossil fuels.”The follow up to Neuromancer, Count Zero is another cyberpunk classic that revisits many themes of his previous book. It follows several interconnected stories: a mercenary hired to attack a corporate fortress that escapes with a girl that has undergone experimental modifications and can hack computers without a deck. A hacker that is almost killed as he is played into testing an experimental deck and discover that there are strange entities roaming the matrix. And a small art gallery owner from Paris that is hired by a eccentric trillionaire to find a series of boxes. The language and descriptions here are top-notch. Gibson has an uncanny talent to makes this now retro-futuristic world come alive, along with several interesting and mind-bending themes. One is how corporations and Big Money end up having a life and will of their own, not only like a living organism, but a colony of different spheres with different agendas that compete among themselves. Another is how artificial intelligences adopt an air of godhood as they incorporate the persona of voodoo gods.

Gibson is up there with Asimov, Dick, Clarke, and Herbert. His projections into the future are disturbingly accurate for being written in the 80s. His frenetic writing style also matches the adrenaline that's pumped into the plot of this book. If you're a sci-fi cyberpunk fan with a tilt towards multiverses, biotechnology, multi-threaded plots and the ilk, then this is the book for you. This is the second of the Sprawl trilogy with Neuromancer preceding Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive coming after. You don't have to read Neuromancer first, but it definitely helps set the stage for the type of world that Gibson immerses you in. Very much looking forward to reading Mona Lisa Overdrive next. Also, if you're deciding between this and Neal Stephenson (Snowcrash) I'd highly recommend the Sprawl trilogy instead.

This is a brilliant novel! I couldn't put it down and i finished it in a week. Cyber punk sci fi fans need to get this novel along with Neuromancer and Mona Lisa Overdrive to complete this wonderfully bizarre Sprawl trilogy. The film the Matrix triology was supposed to an adaptation of these novels, but those movies lack the complexity, the strangeness, and the bizarre atmosphere of this novel Count Zero within its compendium. If a movie was made about these books the way that Mr. Gibson wrote them people's minds would be blown. These novels are written in a beautiful poetic type of writing, which is unique to science fiction just as the stories are. Gibson writes science fiction like Shakespeare writes a sonnet. You'll enjoy this novel if you value well written fiction, but if you like light and straight forward stories this book is not for you.

Count Zero is a worthy sequel to "Neuromancer", and is one of those rare works (with its siblings) that seems almost (but not quite) prophetic. Gibson's world is similar to ours in oh so many ways, and the corollaries between the Internet of today and his vision of cyberspace in 1987 are astonishing. One has to wonder if the names of the nations/corporations were just changed a bit, and the dates were just shifted a bit into the future...whether we are getting closer to Gibson's grim and dystopian future? (So maybe it is prophetic after all?)This book is really about introducing "The Count" himself, and describing the events that shaped him for the concluding book of this trilogy: "Mona Lisa Overdrive". The world is fleshed out a bit, and the reader is treated to the unending complexity of Gibson's world. This, like the other two books in the series are fascinating and in many ways plausible look at how the world _might_ end up. Although this truly is a setup book, don't let that dissuade you, the characters are awesome, and the story is engaging.I recall reading this years ago, perhaps about the time it appeared on the bookshelves the first time, and being fascinated with it. Now, with 25+ years between its' publishing and today, it still manages to capture my attention and interest. Gibson is one of those writers who can write stories about characters and technology in such a way that while central to the story the technology doesn't overwhelm the characters and is abstract enough that even 25 years after he penned the book, it doesn't feel dated or implausible, just different. In this, "Neuromancer" "Count Zero" & "Mona Lisa Overdrive" remind me of E.E. "Doc" Smith's Lensman Novels where starships are flown with banks of Levers, Valves and Inertial Navigation systems, or even the great Isaac Asimov's Foundation books, where "Atomics" rule the day. Even though the technology in their works is dated or even absurd, the stories still stand and are considered classics. So too "Neuromancer", "Count Zero" & "Mona Lisa Overdrive" where I think you'll find that the concept of a [Cyber] Deck isn't so far different from modern tablets, cell phones & PC's after all...and Cyberspace absolutely reeks of the modern Internet (aka Cyberspace!). Even without that easy correlation however, like Asimov & Smith, Gibson's books are bonified classics. On top of that, "Neuromancer", "Count Zero" & "Mona Lisa Overdrive" are THE books that began the entire Cyberpunk genre/meme. How cool is that?"Count Zero" is a book I consider a staple of my collection of great Science Fiction. For me, it and its' siblings stand proudly among my collection of Asimov, Foster, Anderson, Anthony, Pohl, Banks, Bova, Smith, Heinlein, Dickson and many others.

I’ve only been to Chicago a handful of times but I absolutely love the city and was so looking forward to learning the history. But this book did not live up to my expectations. Each chapter covers a specific timeframe of a year or more starting in the 1800’s and it moves between different events, happenings, and following several different people. I didn’t care for the flow of the story, when I would just got interested in one chapter, the next one would be on a completely different subject. All was not completely lost though, I did learn many facts that I did not know before, such as the raising of the city, the sewage problem and the building of the canal, but I felt like the story was shallow on human interest and could have been told in a more fluent manner. My biggest con on the entire book was the flow. I would not consider this an actual novel, it is a medley of historic facts from eyewitnesses, hearsay, newspaper articles and letters. Not what I was expecting. If you are a history buff, it may appeal to you.I was given an advanced copy from Henry Holt and Company through Net Galley for my honest review, this one gets 3***’s.

Don't expect a straight narrative from this tale of Chicago between 1800 and 1900. Carr has used a variety of voices and sources to pull together what is more a series of vignettes than a conventional novel. This makes for some confusion early on but is ultimately rewarding because it reflects the patchwork nature of a great city. Jean Baptiste Pointe de Sable and his descendants figure prominently, as is appropriate. You might find one voice more compelling than another but don't count on it necessarily reappearing. I found this fascinating but understand why others might find it frustrating. Thanks to net galley for the ARC. I knew virtually nothing about Chicago before this book and found it very informative.

Carr’s entertaining and uniquely written novel relates the “history” of Chicago’s first hundred years. Using many plot devices to unfold the story to readers, the novels storyline comes to us through excerpts from an “alternative” history manuscript, journal entries, letters, and newspaper articles among other devices. There is an eclectic mix of characters and their descendants, both historic and fictional, some who travel through the narrative, while others appearing only briefly. This sweeping portrayal of Chicago at its best and worst, its highs and lows, is exceptional. From prairie town to booming metropolis, Chicago and its residents come alive with the details and descriptions in Carr’s prose. He makes us feel the struggle and abject poverty of the immigrants as well as the greed and opulence of monied class. This is a sweeping and compelling novel of what is takes to make a city. Whether you are from Chicago, have visited there, or just love an engaging and expansive work of historical fiction, be sure and pick this one up.Thank you to NetGalley and Henry Holt and Co. for the eARC.

Make me a City is a sprawling, raucous, noisy novel set in the early years of Chicago. Told through the lens of the founding father Pointe du Sable and his descendants, “City” delves the depths of the striving, ambitious, often criminal but always energetic stories of the first inhabitants of the city on the prairie.I loved the way story kept returning to the family of du Sable. In every generation, the history kept returning to the lie that formed the founding story, and its reverberations through the years.I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Make Me a City by Jonathan Carr is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in early March.A semi-fictionalized chronology of Chicago, starting in 1800, in the style of an academic journal in a second-person format, recalling possible conversations and written correspondence around historic events. The quality of writing is adequate, even good, but the story is hard to grasp, like a based-on-a-true-story historic saga that you start watching when it’s already a quarter of the way through.

Make Me a City is a lot of book to read. It is indeed slow going and just frustrating at times. I usually like this type of sweeping saga story, but I got stuck with this one. Maybe too many facts and not enough story to carry it along. Chicago's development through the 19th century is an epic journey, but this book just doesn't quite capture the grandeur of that. Thanks to NetGalley for an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Although the book is historical fiction, it read more like a history book than a novel. I was hoping for more of a storyline to run through the book rather than the relatively dry recitation of facts presented through disjointed episodes. The book was definitely more informative than interesting.

This book is difficult to read. Previous reviews are all from some "get to read the book before it's published, but please leave a review" operation. This is neither a serious historical fiction, nor an entertaining read. Avoid.

#997,606 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Very shallow treatment of the subject. No discussion on custom signals, custom habdlers, subclassing widgets, etc.

This is a good book if you know little or nothing about Python GUI toolkits. It does a great job of going through all the standard GUI classes and how to use each one, one-at-a-time. It shows how to build single stand-alone "toy" applications that are cross-platform.PyQT versus Tkinter: PyQt is the only realistic GUI framework for building scalable, refactorable Python applications. Tkinter is horrible for sophisticated applications when it comes to enhancement or maintenance, and Tkinter performance is poor for large applications.I read the author's earlier book dated 2012. I bought the book hoping to learn the secrets of how to build multi-window (NOT Multi-Document Interfaces aka "MDI") applications. Multi-window is where the application menus, dialogs and windows cause open other modal and non-moded dialog boxes and windows to open, and then manage their lifecycle until they are closed, like Microsoft Word, Powerpoint or Excel do well. These multi-window apps are the norm today for desktop apps. For example, selecting the "File... Open..." menu causes a standard FileOpen Dialog box to open. This book does not explain how to launch and manage child windows or sibling windows. It assumes users will always be building all functionality into a single parent window, and that parent window will not be spawning any other windows or dialog boxes. Without these explanations in a lesson format, the book is incomplete and limited to toy programs or single-window GUI programs. Even Dropbox, which is written in Python spawns other windows, like the Dropbox Preferences dialog box... can launch the Sync dialog box.I can easily build 1-window Python applications all day long with PyQt Builder's graphical layout tools, and then GENERATE all the source code. But the problem is that PyQt Builder applications are also simplistic 1-window, parent-window-only applications. The book really needs supplemental material to show how to build for real-world desktop applications. I contacted the author in 2017 about these omissions. He said he didn't have time to do any more with the book. I am disappointed to see this re-published as "new" in 2018 because it has a new cover. Seems like a new cover on old content. After these omissions are fixed, I'd change my rating from 3 stars to 4.5 or 5 stars.

I agree with the intro to this book that says Harwani can explain "even the most complicated topics in a straightforward and easily understandable fashion.” His organization and presentation reflect his experience teaching actual live students the topics he writes about. Each task section starts out with minimal introductory info, followed by clear, succinct, amply illustrated steps to take (“How to do it”), and only then does it give more details (“How it works”), which you can read to the extent that you want to or need to. I’m not a Python programmer and so have not gone through this particular book thoroughly, but I’ve used parts of other books by this author and found them to be excellent. What I mainly am is an experienced, very fussy technical writer and editor, and I don’t heap praise on authors lightly; in this case, I think it’s well deserved. You can’t go wrong with a book by B.M. Harwani.

This book was very disappointing. It has about 4 times the number of pages it needs for this amount of content. The text is mostly repetitive cut and paste directions that could have been summarized in a figure or tables. There isn't an index so finding topics is not simple, even after reading it from cover to cover. Obvious topics like resizing are ignored while object oriented programming and SQL databases are covered poorly in their own chapters. Almost all the examples use the QDialog type which short changes any coverage of QMainWindow. Very disappointing for what could have been a very useful book.
