Wow! I loved this story. A unique world filled with characters I couldn't resist. The word I'd used to describe this book is gutsy. The author took gutsy chances and boy did they pay off.A really neat mix of what if science was religion and God a scientist. But don't be thinking this is a preachy or religious story full of goody-goody characters. It's not. It's much more. One of the most interesting fantasy books I've come across all year.Rowena is an urchin of the streets. A courier for smugglers and never-do-wells. She's sent to carry a mysterious book that writes itself, possibly written by the hand of God himself, and runs into trouble way over her head. Throw in a charming thief. A fatherly mind reader. And a tough as nails women who links them all together and you get one amazing tale.

One of the best books I have read lately. There is a book that writes itself following the actions of nine random unknown people - whose destinies are the balance on which all humanity will stand judgement on. There are apes with eyes on their heels and sentient trees who are trying to get possession of this book. The reader is introduced to two extraordinary female protagonists: Rowena, an orphan turned black market courier, and Rare, a thief. They are helped by the Alchemist, a mysterious medicine man, and by Anselm Meteron, an elegant gambler and former mercenary. They are all embroiled in an incredible, breath-taking adventure, centred around power and control and fate of all humankind.

Are you familiar with the concept of a “book hangover”? It’s the term I use to describe that feeling when you’ve just finished a book and you don’t want it to be over and your head is kind of stuck in that book’s world. It puts you in a bit of a daze and the easiest way to cure it is to read a different book.Anyway, I picked up Ms Townsend’s The Nine in order to recover from a book hangover from Good Omens by Neil Gaiman. It had been on my list since it came out- I love Ms Townsend, 12/10 quality high school teacher. And now her book’s book hangover has eclipsed the one from Gaiman.I absolutely loved the story and the world. It is a bit reminiscient of The Lies of Locke Lamora, another fantastic book. It has a snappy tone, lovely characters, and a fun cast. I will absolutely be recommending this book to others.Awesome job Ms Townsend! Super proud of you!

Tracy Townsend, I cannot forgive you for writing the best book I have read on a year and then making me wait half a year for the sequel. It is an astonishingly well-written book - story, dialogue, character creation and development, and world-building done to perfection. Lucky are her students.A more mismatched trio of protagonists likely never existed in literature and they will haunt my dreams tonight because, as the indomitable and irrepressible Rowena Downshire says, The Nine is "jake." Five stars. Ten of it would let me.

Wow! A vivid, well-written book. I don't remember why I bought this book, but I'm so glad that I did. Loved everything about it, from the steampunkish/magical vibe to the deep plotting and characterization. Highly recommended and I can't wait for another book in this very entertaining series!

This is an amazing book that keeps you on your toes from cover to cover! The setting is dark and gritty which is a prefect background on which to explore the complex and multifaceted character relationships that evolve as the the story progresses. It would be hard to pin a single genre to this book since it deftly touches on many literary styles. This debut novel from Tracy Townsend is a masterpiece. It ends with enough loose ends to keep readers invested in the next book without leaving cliffhangers that would make the wait for what promises to be an equally well crafted sequel unbearable. I'm already eagerly anticipating the next two books but in the meantime, I'll happily read through The Nine again as I'm sure there's even more to discover within these pages!

Steampunk traditionally relies on this idea that mankind triumphs with the powers of Progress and Reason...and the literal worship of Reason in Corma sure seems like it intends to take you down that path. But right away, The Nine shows you the ugly underbelly of Townsend's industrial city: filth and corruption, abusive employers, religious fanatics, and monstrous thugs. It's a twisty story that grabs you and shakes you until your preconceived notions fall off, and you ride along with a motley crew of characters that are at once fantastic and grimly real. The Nine is excellent, and I'm really looking forward to the next book in the series.

I'm usually a bit of a stickler when it comes to fantasy or sci-fi, but The Nine grabbed me from the beginning and never let go.Townsend's writing style reminded me of Paolo Bacigalupi (Ship Breaker, The Windup Girl) in her ability to create a rich world without sacrificing plot. The characters are complex and their motivations feel incredibly realistic. I haven't been this engaged in a fictional world in a very long time.I can't wait for the sequel!
