Review

“Kimmel does a solid job of putting the reader into the shoes of the young lama, called Kundun, including personable details such as his desire to play instead of study (he loved to run and slide over the freshly polished floors of the palace) and his boyish delight in technology . . . . This is a strange and fascinating story told in an engaging style, and young readers will find lots to keep them turning the pages. Archival photographs, a selected bibliography, and a list of online resources offer further information.” ―Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books“Kimmel successfully weaves the everyday world of this Buddhist leader into the cultural, religious, and historical aspects of his time. The narrative is interesting and, at times, gripping, especially the description of his dramatic flight into exile in India.” ―School Library Journal“The author clearly explains Tibetan history, life and customs as well as difficult terms and religious concepts.” ―Kirkus Reviews

I read this before I watched the film "Kundun" and it greatly enriched the viewing experience for me. Although the book is aimed at young adults, it was a pleasure to read and has some wonderful photographs of the young Dalai Lama and Tibet throughout. The book explains some of the things that you will see in "Kundun" which are not clearly explained in the film. Armed with this knowledge, you won't be left confused and certain scenes will become relevant. The chapters about the Dalai Lama as a child were especially entertaining. I laughed out loud at the descriptions of the antics of His Holiness and his older brother, such as the time they were fighting so much that they almost tipped over the palanquin they were riding in. This book will help you see that although he is a world-famous spiritual leader, His Holiness is still just a human like you and me.

For a young reader this is a fine introduction to the childhood and life of the 14th Dalai Lama. The author did a nice job, considering how complicated the subject matter is. An added touch is the short Foreword from the Dalai Lama himself.

This will be an easy read for middle schoolers, if they have some background knowledge and they are reading close to grade level.

Great book!!!

Great story, comfortable reading level for 5th/6th grade reader. My son is not an enthusiastic reader, but loved this book! Spontaneously talks about it with me, which is refreshing in a normally reticent tween.
