As was stated by another reviewer, the photographs in this volume really need to be much larger. Too much emphasis was placed on making the book look "artsy" rather than showing these remarkable slides to their best advantage by making them much larger. That, being said, is my only beef with this book.As a longtime fan of Elvgren's work, this book is a remarkable insight into a largely unknown aspect of the artist - his love for taking photos with a Stereo Realist camera, which was one of the most popular "3D" image cameras of the 1950's. Someone, and I don't think the book makes it clear who, found Elvgren's meticulously cataloged collection of these 3D slides, neatly packed in the original carrying case, and a good number of them are reproduced here for the first time ever. I cannot imagine the financial value of the actual collection itself, but whomever owns it is indeed a very fortunate man - and thank heavens it still exists, just as it did when Gil Elvgren closed and latched the case for the last time.These are almost entirely full color nudes, the majority of which look to have been taken in the early 1950s. He was quite a good photographer in addition to being an outstanding painter, and this book will certainly illustrate that. Perhaps he did use some of these photos for reference during painting, but the majority of them look to have been done simply for the art of taking photos of beautiful ladies.The quality of the book is superb, the format is decent but wish it would've been just a bit larger, and as stated at the beginning, the images themselves could have been reproduced much larger; there's far too much blank space around each one of them that really is needless - somebody was just trying to make the book look classier. Note to the publisher, we'd rather see the photos themselves than to have smaller photos and lots of black ink around them just so the book can look more artistic to whomever designed it.If you like Elvgren's work, buy it - this is a great look at the photographic side of him, and has very little to do with his pin-up paintings for which he is so well-known.
I've been a fan of Elvgren's pin-up work for many years. And this book of Elvgren's photos is quite good in adding another layer about Elvgren's work as an artist of the female form. In looking through this book of his photographs I noticed something peculiar. There's an IDENTICAL PHOTO in the Elvgren book that's also in the book "Hollywood Nudes In 3-D!", by Suzanne Lloyd, published in 2004 by Tess Press/Black Dog & Leventhal Publishers. This is a book of normal and 3-D photographs (3-D glasses included) which were taken by well known early actor Harold Lloyd.So how can the same photo--along with a few others that are suspiciously almost identical to photos in the Elvgren book--be taken by Harold Lloyd too? In the Lloyd book there's no mention of Elvgren anywhere. Did Lloyd and Elvgren know each other through photography? They both were enamored with 3-D/stereoscopic photography and used a number of models and actresses from Hollywood. Did they share their work with each other--hence a mix-up of exactly whose photo it is?But I do find it a bit disturbing that the identical photo--a girl kneeling on a pillow facing to the left with a large bow wrapped around her middle--is in two books by two different photographers--both claiming that the picture in question is their photograph.Can any Elvgren fan (or Lloyd fan) shed any light on this seeming impossibility?
as someone who draws portraits, this book is very useful referenceand as a Elvren's admirer, it's also an interesting book.The price is a little up there but I think the book quality is really good.But I would only reccommend this book to only thosewho are real fans of the artist or you are an artist who also draw/paint yourself
Just to be clear - these slides were not taken by Elvgren, they're from his personal collection of commercial pinup slides. From my perspective as a stereo photo fan, it's disappointing that no stereo slides are reproduced properly in stereo (either side-by-side or anaglyph). Obviously that's a bit of a niche market, and would probably mean they'd need to pack in a stereo viewer, but it's really too bad. A fair number of these pictures were taken with a stereo camera and were meant to be seen in 3-D.
This book is a fascinating insight to a side of commercial art that rarely is examined — the artist's reference collections. We like to think that all of the pinup greats worked from life when, in fact, most worked from photographic references as any good commercial artist would.As a long-time fan of Elvgren's work, I found this collection of images rather interesting from a personal standpoint. These images were from his own, private, reference collection; and weren't necessarily intended for a finished piece. Those looking for a collection of images that can easily be identified with Elvgren's finished artwork will probably not enjoy this collection.I've read a couple of negative comments about this book and I think the commentor(s) were missing the point of why this collection was published. Personally, I thoroughly enjoy and appreciate the value of this book and am very happy to be able to add it to my library.
While I have admired Gil Elvgren's body of work for many years, I am a bit disappointed with this book, composed of small format publications of the photos that he used as inspiration for his wonderful paintings.The photos are good, but the small physical size of the pictures is very disappointing.
Maybe not for all...but....a fascinating glimpse into the mechanics behind the work of oneof the most celebrated American pin up artists of all time. Photographs of favorite models tookthe place of rough sketches for many pin up creators. This book is entirely made up ofElvgren's photos. A glimpse into time past and an art of its time.
