Spring: A Novel (Seasonal Quartet), by Ali Smith

Review

“Smith’s genius in these three books has been to use art and literature to navigate through the froth of the present moment with such a light touch that she rarely seems to lecture. . . . Florence is a classic Smith trope: the stranger who can reawaken characters’ dormant imaginations and emotions, break the frozen sea within. She is also, as she points out when told off for naivety in questioning society’s attitude to national borders, just a 12-year-old girl—‘What do you expect?’ With schoolchildren currently leading climate change protests, her inclusion in the novel is a beautiful piece of synchronicity, and the sparky, buzzy banter between her and Brit is brilliantly done. . . . This is a novel that contains multitudes, and the wonder is that Smith folds so much in, from visionary nature writing to Twitter obscenities, in prose that is so deceptively relaxed. Jokes detonate throughout, from the bleak to the whimsical, as surprising and moving connections are revealed between all three novels. . . . As her Seasonal Quartet moves towards completion her own role in British fiction looks ever more vital.” —Justine Jordan, The Guardian  “Spring, the third installment in Ali Smith’s series of novels about modern Britain, bursts with the bruised hope of redemption. Smith’s seasonal quartet of novels is a bold and brilliant experiment. Starting in 2015, the author embarked on writing four novels with a tight turnaround, handing in the manuscripts as the printing press was humming. . . . For the stately world of literary publishing, this pace is revolutionary. The latest novel turns its gaze on the migrant crisis and the rise of nationalism. It burns with moral urgency at the same time as feeling timeless and playful. . . . What has happened to Britain? It’s a question that echoes through the seasonal series and reaches a perfectly pitched hymn of fury in Spring. And it’s not just Britain. . . . Smith writes of our globalized world. . . . The ending isn’t straightforward sunshine, but we get a glimpse of the moral power of the young generation, ordinary people’s timeless urge to resist injustice, and the enduring consolations of art. Spring is an astonishing accomplishment and a book for all seasons. “ —Ceri Radford, The Independent (London) “The third part of Ali Smith’s Seasonal Quartet, Spring, is timely not only because of its March release date, but because it weaves a story around the most pressing issues of our time: Brexit, the internet, the environment and immigration. . . . Smith finds delicious new tragic and comic moments everywhere. . . . Despite the stark indictment of humanity’s evils that this bubbling, babbling brook of a book contains, the real story is the eternal, deep pulse of nature doing its thing, oblivious to our sordid ways. Nature, in Smith’s hands, is a strange sort of mother, as are all the other women in Spring: unsentimental, wise, foul-mouthed and kind. Not unlike their creator. She tells stories in a voice you can’t help but listen to.” —Melissa Katsoulis, The Times of London “Smith is a masterful storyteller. With just a few words she can build engaging worlds and identifiable characters. . . . What makes Smith extraordinary is the way she layers her work. The structure of Spring is fluid—she weaves in different voices and modernist riffs that come out of nowhere and stop you in your tracks. . . . Through her account of unlikely friendships, Smith brings human values to the fore. Savor it, because there is just one installment left.” —Susannah Butter, The Evening Standard “All is revealed in the spring of 2019. As in the first two books, Smith alludes to contemporary issues, such as #MeToo, Brexit, and fake news, but on immigrants she grabs a megaphone. . . . Roots, shoots, and buds abound amid myriad references to death and rebirth, from the Hanged Man pub to Orpheus, Norse mythology's Ragnarok, and Shelley's ‘The Cloud.’ The three novels have a few common elements—the pain and pleasure of creativity; the pairing of an older adult and an intelligent youth; the showcasing of an English female visual artist, here Tacita Dean—but they are self-contained and increasingly urgent in their hope that art might bring change. . . . Smith's work is always challenging and always rewarding.” —Kirkus Reviews [starred review] “The third book in Ali Smith’s quartet is her best yet, a dazzling hymn to hope, uniting the past and present . . . It feels like two things are happening here. First, Smith is increasingly recognizing the narrative possibilities of this new type of storytelling, finding deeper and more compelling ways of getting under the skin of her times. There’s something else, though. While reading Spring, I became suddenly aware of the extraordinary meta-novel—the year—that the quartet will form once it’s complete, and how thrilling and important that book will be . . . Now it’s possible to recognize quite how dazzling the interplay of ideas and images between the four books will be . . . There’s so much to say about this luminous, generous, hope-filled novel . . . All of this rich material feels amplified by the echoes and resonances that thrum between Spring and its predecessors. [Smith] has always been a profoundly moral writer, but in this series of novels she is doing something more than merely anatomizing the iniquities of her age. She’s lighting us a path out of the nightmarish now.” —Alex Preston, The Observer Praise for the Seasonal Quartet: “Ali Smith is flat-out brilliant . . . [She] has balanced darkness with light, blackness with hope.” —NPR “A wonder of deep and accommodating compassion.” —The Washington Post  “Gorgeous . . . Utterly original.” —The New York Times Book Review  “A triumph of imagination.” —The Atlantic  “The profound pleasure of these books is their near miracle.” —The Boston Globe  “Brilliant, breathtakingly immediate . . . While this seasonal quartet has its angry and organized passages . . . its creator wants to remind us that the pendulum can swing back and that one day the sun will return.” —Slate

I love reading anything about the mind. I've experienced many moments of intuition, and am always in awe every time it happens of what the mind is capable of. I found Nora Truscello's book enlightening and extremely informative about the miracle of intuition. This book confirms my belief in intuition and the importance of "following your hunch". This book is well written, and I highly recommend "The Science of Intuition" for anyone that would like to acquire a better understanding about the mysteries of our mind and body.

I've always believed in a great energy we all draw from. Call it the collective consciousness. I'm very pragmatic, but I try to put my trust in this source to make the right decisions. This book not only confirmed my beliefs about the power of intuition and relying on more than your top-level rational thought, but it gave in depth detail of how the process works, including many exercises that will help you draw from the well of your intuition.I highly recommend this book.

The author is well trained, well educated, well practiced, spiritually oriented and motivated to help the reader claim a birthright. She has worked hard to make the material accessible and I believe that anyone who follows Truscello's specific steps will find their desire satisfied to become more aware and confident of one's ability to use the skills to constructive ends, including increased self-acceptance. Empaths especially will benefit from the author's discussion of "intuitive footprints" that enable one to determine if the sudden change of mood springs from within or via an empathic resonance with somebody else.

This is a book on intuition unlike any I have never read before. It explains how to locate the areas on your physical body that tell you how to confirm your intuitions. It also explains how to develop this intuition. Very interesting read.

I understand a lot of heart and passion went into the writing of this book---so thank you for that, Nora. However, I almost put the book down after the first chapter because of so much attention to "religious" references: God, The Lord, Demons, Devil, etc. I am spiritual, but not religious. I believe a book on intuition can be written without religious doctrine (Spirit, yes. Religious dogma, no.) Also, the convention and usage errors were a major distraction. I suggest that the author employ an editor to comb the book for such errors. There were MANY. Another thing that made me question the credibility of the author: she indicated she had worked with Edgar Cayce's A.R.E. for years. She called it, "The Association OF Research and Enlightenment." The OF should be replaced with FOR. These may seem petty, but they are enough to make me question professional credibility. And again, these errors and references to religion were highly distracting in a book that promotes focus.

I found this book to be dark and not very realistic. Some points are reasonable but most are not worth reading. Also, the book has a very “you must do it exactly this way or else you can kiss any results goodbye” approach. This approach completely dishonors inviduals innate wisdom and inherent inner guidance. Truly an awful book. Don’t bother.

Tuning into your intuition is much easier than this, meditation will get you there faster, if you trust yourself.

The Science of Intuition is for everyone who wants to tap into their intuitive side of self. What I love about this book is that it is very understandable and broken down well for the average person without the author's background to readily access. Nora Truscello takes the reader step-by-step through her process to access our intuition. A great read!

This was an extended preview of the actual book. I am ok with a series but in a series each book has an ending. This section ended in an action scene and you are directed to the next segment. The story is well written, fast paced, and interesting. I could get into this except I do not like having to purchase the story in a piecemeal fashion.

This is less than 100 pages and is just a teaser to a story that could have been a very good novel. The fact that this ends with a cliff-hanger right in the middle of an exciting scene is even more annoying! The plot and writing are good but I don't care for purchasing segments of a book. It appears (from reading the reviews) that book 2 is the same - just a segment of a novel but triple the price of book 1. No thanks. I'm done. Perhaps when all of the segments are finished and put into one book and priced appropriately I'll reconsider reading this. At this rate if it takes 4 or 5 segments to create the novel you'll be paying $10 or $13 for one complete story.Unfortunate that Lily Archer would do this. ☹️

The story itself starts out interesting enough. A young woman in college gets knocked out and wakes up in an alternate realm. This is a typical story of destiny-mates which is a popular trope, though the acceptance part always leaves me scratching my head. This is no different. But, it had promise. The characters are interesting. My main problem is that I feel cheated that at no point was it indicated that this is NOT THE FULL STORY. It's a serial and leaves on a cliff hanger where you need to pay again and again to get each installment until the entire story is told. These type of books should be clearly marked. People should know going in that it's not a full story. It's unfair to the reader.

Loved it! This series has everything I was looking for. The books both end on cliff hangers which kinda sucks but I can be patient. My only real qualm is that these books are awfully short. The first one was 99 cents so I was okay with it but the next one was 2.99 and just as long. The third book is priced the same and I suspect it will be equally short. I understand the desire to get more content out to readers faster but I feel a tad salty paying 2.99 for a book that you can read in 1.5 hours- 3 hours

At first I was a bit upset at how short this was and then realized it only cost .99c. All in all the story wasn't too bad at that price. The story starts off w Taylor in college and you feel for her since she has this crappy roommate. Those of us who've lived on campus and have lived thru crazy roommates can relate. Things then take a turn for the weird when Taylor is drugged and shipped to a whole nother realm. My first issue is the lack of info on how Taylor got there. Not enough fleshing out on the realm and courts. There is a slight build up w Taylor and Leander but it feels as rushed as the story line. Too many things are mentioned that leave you with more questions than answers. On the flipside the secondary characters are actually a tad bit more interesting and have more spunk. I love Beth's tell it as it is attitude. Gareth's gallant attitude is so sweet and the contrast btwn how he treats Beth and Taylor make me wonder where things may lead.I expected more btwn Leander and Taylor. You can feel the beginnings of something budding and the sexual tension is there but it was just ok. Lily Archer does have an easy way of writing that captures you and gently coax you to keep reading just a bit more. The first book and her writing style have intrigued me enough to check out the next book in hopes of just a bit more.

This book is a cliff hanger not a full read,, more like a snippet of a story,,very little story building, dont waste ur time or money,, rip off

Great writing, I really like the hero, heroine, secondary characters and world building but something needs to be done about the pricing or breaking the story up into less pieces. If this wasn't in Kindle Unlimited I would have had to walk away and that is a shame. This story is broken into 4 pieces which will total $10.00 when all is said and done if the last installment is also $2.99. I will buy this complete series but won't be able to purchase the secondary story on principle. The progress in the story is slow but busy in character building which I liked because it was done so well. On the other hand, I have read the first 2 books and haven't made much progress on the story arc.The world building itself is intriguing. The heroine wakes up in the fae summer realm which she didn't know existed and wasn't sure how she arrived there. The king of the winter realm was at the palace and scented Taylor as his mate and so the story begins. There are many mysteries to still be solved. Who and what is Taylor? What is the curse on the winter realm? What role will the obsidian witch play in the future? What is the prophesy surrounding Taylor, why does the king beyond the mountain want her?As you can see the story is very rich. I would have given it 5 stars if it wasn't written as a serial and the pricing was more reasonable.

I’m always up for a “new to me author” even if Paranormal isn’t my jam. That being said I LOVED the cute and quirkiness of this one! It had me hooked from the beginning. And I never got lost in this new world!Cecile is the best! She’s that one hot mess of a friend everyone has that causes the chaos but somehow manages to wind up unscathed. At least so far.Leander and Taylor have some great chemistry along with the other characters added in.And holy cliffhanger...

Natalie is an awesome character, she has spunk, attitude and is likable. Donovan is a jerk, although he slightly redeemed himself. Eric , Henri and Penny are great can't wait to get to know them more. Now got to dive into the next one.

Hmmm, I wavered between 4 and 5 stars and actually went with 5 because I still find this story interesting. And although there were times when there were missing words here or there, I still liked how well this book was written. It wasn't dark like Hunger Games, and regardless of what anyone says, that series (although written well) was not my favorite series. The idea of sentencing children to kill children is just plain horrible. This one will have teenagers killing, but those described (Henri, Erik, and Talia) did not enjoy it and actually had to force themselves to do it for different reasons. And at least she is the youngest at 17 and not 12 like in Hunger Games.Talia was definitely a teenager and a bit spoiled at that. Yes, she lost her parents young and should not have been a witness to it, but she gets taken in by Mac and Gretchen, who proceed to buy her tons of beautiful clothes, give her her own suite of rooms, cooks and pampers her, and then Mac gives her special privileges that other pledges don't have including pulling for her to be a Hunter. And yes, she does spend a lot of time angst-ING about Donavon and Erik, and was quite annoying sometimes. So she wasn't my favorite character, but I didn't hate her. As for Donavon...I wanted to like Donavon, but as the book progressed you did begin to suspect something was off about him and their relationship and you started to hope she and Erik would end up together. Although there was also a part of me that didn't think she deserved him. I loved Erik, even if he was a bit of a man-whore. At least he was up front about it and he did charm me. I also really liked Penny and Henri. There is definitely more to know about Henri and Frederick (like Frederick's reason for not staying with TOXIC.I really enjoyed the first book even if it wasn't perfect. Reminded me of X-Men and how many people believe any of that was possible other than the possibility of telepathy? However, if you're not into teenage angst, then this book may not sit well with you and may just leave you annoyed.

If really liked this book and I can't wait to read more of your stories. It was exciting, romantic and suspenseful. Also, who are the bad guys only reading more of your series will determine.

Where have you been hiding???? This was just one of those books that I had picked up along the way. I was in no big rush at starting it, and when I began was a little nervous about what I would find. The description had prepared me for a story a little scifi, and a little action. The best way that I can describe what I actually found in this story is a post apocalyptic story with an intense twist. While it was not the end of the world per say; it was the end of the world as we know it. Talia is a loner and unique character. Even in a world of unique abilities; she is different. Tal's world is far from anything we know, but it was creative and easily imaginative with Sophie Davis's amazing talent for detail. I was engross almost immediately by this story line and the characters. I loved the relationship between Tal and Donovan, as well as, her relationship between her team. As the debuting novel of this series I expected this book to set the stage for the series of books to come. Therefore, the constant building was not unexpected. As the action begins to unfold, and the story takes a bit of a twist I was excited to say that the books to come will be anything but uneventful. Talented is an incredible start to this story where everything is not what it seems. I can not wait to see where the series will go, and what is in store for this cast of incredible characters. ~BookWhisperer Reviewer Jax~

**I received a free copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest review**An AMAZING and Talented author! I loved this book - it was part fast paced with a ton of action and adventures, as well as part love story.Natalia Lyons, or Talia for short, is a Talent - she has a special ability due to the "Great Contamination" over a hundred years prior that caused a lot of natural disasters - which lead to a nuclear contamination. The result was the Talented who have special abilities such as Morphing, Light Manipulation, Viewers, Telekinesis, or the rarest type of Talent - a Mimic which can take on any Talent from someone around them. Talia is Telepathy, but a very exceptional one referred to as an advanced Mind Manipulator.Since her parents were murdered right before her eyes when she ten years old, she has wanted to hone her skills, especially when the director of the McDonough School for the Talented - Danbury McDonough, aka Mac, and his family - take her in and adopt her as a part of their family. And now Talia is a Pledge to the Hunters (aka Spies) through the "Talented Organization of Exceptionally Interesting Citizens or TOXIC, so she can take revenge on those who tore her family apart and killed her parents - whom she believes is another group of Talents called the Coalition who is lead by Ian Crane.Beside her through her training is her boyfriend, Donavon - who is also the son of Mac, as well as her team mates Henri and Erik. As her training progresses, she and her team build a strong working bond. Using Erik's morphing skills along with Talia's telepathy skills, the three of them are able to communicate without uttering a word out loud, which comes in very handy while running missions. Throughout her training, Talia feels Donavon slowly pulling away from her, but she tries to maintain their bond. Then she meets Penny, who is a Pledge for the "BRAINS" or Cryptos. They become fast friends, which Talia likes as the only other friends she has are her boyfriend and her two team mates. Once Talia and her team go on their first mission, it quickly goes from bad to worse when Talia is seriously injured. Erik helps her - using his mimicking talent - by taking the pain away while Henri tends to the wound. From that moment on, Talia and Erik share a special bond.Upon returning their compound, things between Talia and Donavon become even more strained. When he leaves for a mission of his own, Talia is feeling the pressure of their relationship, but knows there are more important things at stake. While he is gone, Talia starts feeling things like jealousy regarding Erik, but again, she quick tries to dismiss them, but the keep nagging at her in the back of her mind. But when Donavon's betrayal hits too close to Talia's heart and she finds him with another girl in his bed, she explodes and blows up his cabin.Mac then sends Talia and her team on several missions, but she walks around like she is in a fog that just won't lift - so she throws herself into her training and preparations. As her skills and confidence build - as well as her feelings for Erik. Finally, she is called to Mac's office to complete her "Solo mission", which is basically like their graduation - and it isn't just any solo mission...she is to infiltrate the compound of Ian Crane himself. Just as her relationship with Erik starts to bloom, she is off to Las Vegas for her mission. But when she runs into trouble and comes face to face with Ian Crane himself, Talia is injured and forced to make a quick getaway. Lucky for Talia, she is able to activate her tracker before she blacks out. The TOXIC operatives - Donavon in particular - finds her and she is rushed to the awaiting plane. But when Donavon finds a letter from Erik to Talia he gave her right before her mission that explains how he came to be with TOXIC and about his family, it's anyone's guess on how Donavon will react - will he give the note to his father, or back to Talia and keep Erik's secrets safe?I just LOVED this book! Talia is strong and smart, and while she is a flawed human despite her abilities, she is real. And I thought that the "love triangle" was brought around well - Erik seems too hot for words! Can't wait to see what happens next in this amazing series! Highly recommend :)

First of all, the author should have made it perfectly clear that this manual was intended largely for AT&T users. Going through the manual, you just have to ignore or delete the sections that are specific to AT&T. The other instructions are pretty much the same no matter which carrier you use. Fairly basic manual, nothing earth shattering. Pages 11-112 are instructional. Pages 113-168 are the authors recommended Android apps for the S4.

This phone DOES NOT come with a manual. You can download it on the computer BUT this manual is so much easier for me. I flaged the pages I knew I would have to go back to for help. I was so very glad to find it printed in book form. It was definitely a good buy for me!

I love this book! It helps me navigate throughout the book onto what I want to look for. Great product!! :D Also, speed and prompt delivery was right on time (a few hours earlier, but that's good!)!!!!!!!! A++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++! You guys were awesome!

So helpful glad someone was selling this sense I lost mine

This still didn't cover all the questions I had. For one, how to lengthen the number of rings before it goes to voicemail. The maximum on the phone is 10 seconds which is not always long enough. However, there is a way to do this. Such a common setting should easily be available.

I have a T-Mobile phone. This is a manual for AT&T phones and is not suitable for me. That should have been made clear in the description and I wouldn't have purchased this book. It is largely useless to me.

I am finally mastering my phone. This manual has made it possible. Using the camera is not as detailed as I needed, but otherwise it really has been very helpful and informative.

Enjoyable manual for a newbie like myself.
