From the Back Cover

"This enthralling book describes one of the most dramatic and mysterious processes in the history of mankind--the collapse of the Bronze Age civilizations. Cline walks us through events that transpired three millennia ago, but as we follow him on this intriguing sojourn, lurking in the back of our minds are tantalizing, perpetual questions: How can prosperous cultures disappear? Can this happen again; to us?"--Israel Finkelstein, coauthor ofThe Bible Unearthed: Archaeology's New Vision of Ancient Israel and the Origin of Its Sacred Texts"Impressively marshaling the most recent archaeological and historical evidence, Eric Cline sets the record straight: there was a 'perfect storm' of migrations, rebellions, and climate change that resulted in the collapse of states that were already unstable in the Late Bronze Age. There followed an 'age of opportunity' for new kinds of political systems and ideologies that remade the world of the eastern Mediterranean in the first millennium B.C. Onward and upward with collapse!"--Norman Yoffee, University of Michigan"Cline has written a wonderfully researched and well-crafted overview of one of the most fascinating, complex, and debated periods in the history of the ancient world. Tying together an impressively broad range of disparate data, he weaves together a very convincing re-creation of the background, mechanisms, and results of the transition from the Late Bronze Age to the Iron Age in the eastern Mediterranean and beyond."--Aren Maeir, Bar-Ilan University"1177 B.C. tells the story of one of history's greatest mysteries. Unknown invaders shattered the splendid civilizations of the Bronze Age Mediterranean in a tidal wave of fire and slaughter, before Egypt's pharaoh turned them back in a fierce battle on the banks of the Nile. We do not know who these attackers were, and perhaps we never will; but no archaeologist is better equipped to guide us through this dramatic story than Eric Cline.1177 B.C. is the finest account to date of one of the turning points in history."--Ian Morris, author ofWhy the West Rules--for Now"This book is a very valuable and very timely addition to the scholarship on the end of the Late Bronze Age. Cline provides a comprehensive, interdisciplinary, and up-to-date treatment of one of the most dramatic and enigmatic periods in the history of the ancient world."--Trevor Bryce, author of The World of the Neo-Hittite Kingdoms: A Political and Military History"This is an excellent, thought-provoking book that brings to life an era that is not well known to most readers."--Amanda H. It's nearly impossible to gather any coherent meaning from this disorganized mess of short writings. The author meanders all over the map (literally), shifting from broad generalizations to discursive observations about minutiae. I have no idea where he is heading or what he even proposes to be explaining. There is no justification of the title. If you removed the title and just read the book, you would call it "A collection of small thoughts about some battles between a lot of ancient tribes you haven't heard of, some kings whose names you can't pronounce, and the Egyptians."What is the meaning of these battles and snippets of historical interaction between these obscure people who live in places whose locations we are not certain about? Nobody knows the meaning. Certainly not this author. The title of this book is simply a lie. This is not the subject of the book. The book has no coherent subject. Go read Wikipedia and save your money.

[ I have edited this review to correct some flaws pointed out in comments. ]The other reviewers have already pointed out the book's many fine points; I agree with them that this is a book well worth reading. I had long thought that the Late Bronze Age Collapse was primarily due to the depredations of the Sea Peoples, and this book scotches that idea. Yes, the Sea Peoples played a part in it, but they may well have been just as much Effect as Cause. That is, their rampage may well have been induced by the same factors that brought down other cities. The real contribution of this book lies in the application of recent archaeological findings to the problem. Over the last few decades archaeologists have built up a steady compilation of data on the cities of the Late Bronze Age, and they have demonstrated that not all those cities were destroyed in wars. Some show evidence of having been wrecked by earthquakes; in others, the destruction is confined to the central palace and government facilities, suggesting that a popular revolt, not a foreign invasion, lay behind the destruction. Other sites, however, do show the kind of general destruction we'd expect from a victorious enemy.Especially important is the evidence they bring to bear showing that some sort of regional climate change was responsible for the at least some part of the collapse. The evidence indicates a cooler, dryer climate which would have been devastating to the cereal crops on which civilizations are dependent. The cooler climate would have led to repeated famines that would have led to revolts, migrations, and wars - all of which appear in the record of this period. However, there are two points on which I disagree with the author. The first is the author's decision not to organize the causal factors into some sort of logical pattern. Instead, he declares that all of the factors (climate change, poor harvests, migration, civil disturbance, and war) converged to create a "perfect storm" that destroyed Late Bronze Age civilization in the Near East. That struck me as overly conservative. My second objection falls on the assumption that a collapse of international trade caused by the piratical depredations of the Sea Peoples added to the collapse. The author several times refers to an 'international system' of trade, likening it to modern globalization. He even goes so far as to suggest that the societies of that time had developed such intricate trade relationships that the disruption of those relationships helped undermine the societies. The problem arises when you think in terms of economic output. In all early societies, agricultural output constituted the vast majority of economic output. Sure, the historical records teem with stories of gems, spices, precious woods, and metals, but they attracted so much attention only because they were so rare. In terms of economic output, grain was far and away the most important component of all ancient societies. Indeed, in 1790, 90% of all laborers in the USA worked on farms. So let's keep our eyes on the ball here: grain.Trade in grain was rare and limited to emergency situations, because the transport systems of the Late Bronze Age were incapable of moving grain in bulk. The ocean-going ships of the day had cargo capacities of a few tens of tons. Grain was carried in heavy ceramic jars; a single ship could carry enough food to provide for at most a hundred people for a year. Land transportation was even worse: the inefficient wagons and poor roads of the day did not permit the carriage of large amounts of grain very far. After a few tens of miles, so much of the grain would have to go to feed the dray animals that there just wouldn't be much left at the destination. Thus, the disruption of trade would have denied rulers their luxuries, but would not have made much of a dent on the economy as a whole.A postscript to this review: the author of the book, Eric Cline, has graciously responded to my criticisms and finally gotten through my thick head a point that, while not mentioned in this review, came up in the exchange of comments. He has taken a lot of his time to straighten me out, and I deeply appreciate his patience with my errors.

It's a good book, one that fills in a significant gap that can often be seen in other books on the ancient Bronze Age societies. Cline is very, very careful to qualify findings, which makes a lot of sense but also gives the book a vague, indeterminate feel. The fact is that we just don't much about what happened, and the little we do know is not enough to actually construct a strong narrative on the events that led to all of these civilizations falling apart. So, at times, it led me to wonder why I was actually reading this book.I also find the name to be disingenuous. The year is chosen because that is when we "know" that Ramses III encountered the Sea Peoples in Egypt, but Cline spends a significant chunk of the book underplaying the role the Sea Peoples had in Bronze Age Collapse. In fact, sometimes it feels like he is underplaying the Bronze Age Collapse itself. He is quite quick to point out the cities that were re-populated, that did not suffer as much as first thought, and so forth. Yet he also doesn't, in my opinion, spend nearly enough time in Greece, as the destruction of the Myceneae civilization is much more total than the ones he does focus on. Then again, though, the information we would need to tell that story is just not there. However, these faults are outweighed by the fact that Cline paints a very, very good picture of what civilization was like at the time before the collapse. The picture he paints is one of, by all accounts, a very cosmopolitan, dynamic, lively society. It's where the vast majority of the book spends its time, and it's clear that is where Cline's interests lie. The problem is that the narrative is set up so that this is merely a prologue to the collapse, yet the way the collapse is soft-pedaled makes the whole thing feel more like a bait & switch. I would have happily read a book on Late Bronze Age civilization that was sold as such, but perhaps the publishers thought selling it as a gripping story of collapse would get more attention (and they were probably right).I do recommend this book, just don't go in expecting what the title and description says.

I had a copy of both books. I love having the two books combined. Well written and illustrated. My students had a good understanding of what it means to be an author and illustrator.

This is a great book for kids interested in writing and illustrating books. It really inspired my daughter to finish her book.

Eileen Christelow masterfully demonstrates the process of writing and illustrating in a manner fitting for young students. Children who adore her books and illustrations will enjoy this behind the scenes view of an author/illustrator's work.

A wonderful book for my bookish grandchildren, both still 3, who love to make their own books. I learned a lot from it as well.

Very educational. My daughter who dreams to be a writer and an artist likes this so much.

Awesome for a literacy teacher!!

I love it and the kids love it.

The book it self is ok, the CD will not work I tried it in all my computer's. You are probably better off downloading the book in PDF form. The CD is not worth it.

College book. Not much else to say on this subject.

this service really bad, i haven't recieved this order for more than 75 days. do contact me ASAP. i have written a few emails but not yet replyed.below is your email subject sent to me on Dec, 30, 2011 last year.Your Amazon.com order of "SolidWorks 2010 Bible" has shipped!

Delivered on time as promised and was of good quality. Thanks

The product description states, "The only guide you need to learn the leading 3D solid modeler program, SolidWorks." Not entirely true. The bible covers a LOT of information - some important, some not so. A lot of the information - I've seen on blogs and in the SolidWorks Help / Tutorials. He doesn't use the default interface windows (toolbar locations) - so it was confusing to me as a new user. I was comparing the book to my system. I hit a hot key by mistake which activated a selection filter, it took over 5 minutes before I realize that a filter was active and 5 minutes looking through the book to deactivate it. I gave up looking and blogged the question. The book index provided no help - filters page 1048 - featuremanger - no selection filters. This is a reference book?Try to find information on an eDrawing using the index? There is no mention of the Universial Joint Mate or Add-ins. No examples or tutorials of the Curve feature, Equation Driven Curve, etc. - just definitions from SolidWorks. The more I look through the book, the more it does not have the items I'm looking for. THE ONLY GUIDE - NO WAY!!!

I really, really wanted to buy this book for Kindle. I even downloaded a sample, where I discovered the same problem that caused me to return a similar technical book in Kindle - figures are too small and there is no reasonable way to zoom them. I know that some technical Kindle books do have enlarged figures, but I don't think this is one of them.Someday I'd love to see ALL books available for Kindle, with the graphics size problem FIXED. There's no good technical reason for the problem.I can't blame Kindle for the content that the publisher provides them. (I do blame them for no graphics zoom capability in Kindle for PC, a terrible non-feature..)What a boon it would be for users of technical books to have them available on Kindle, with graphics zoom capabilities that would allow even the poorly sighted among us to look closely! Some day.

A very well book for begginers and for the user with experience in Solidworks.Congratulations for the autor.I recomend this one for who want to know a litle bit more about Solidworks

I am currently using this book in an advanced SW class. The tutorials are useless. They are so badily writen that they are impossible to follow. Lombard leaves out key instructions needed to complete the tutorials and actually understand what he's trying to teach you.It should be called the Solid Works 2010 Comic Book.

I have always trusted the Newbery Medal until now. This book drags. I mean it really drags. My 12 y/o attempted to read it and just put it down after about 1/4 of the book and said it was boring. She reads just about anything so I was surprised. I attempted to read it chapter by chapter at night to my 7 y/o. He complained constantly and kept asking "which one are we asking about now?". I agreed that it was almost impossible to follow but thought it might be the format of reading one chapter a night. So I decided to sit and read it myself. I have to agree wholeheartedly with both my children. It dragged on too long and was boring. You don't even get to the "prank that causes their lives to collide" until the second half of the book. It failed to convey any kind of redeeming message and was not entertaining either. Definitely not worth putting on your child's reading list.

I bought this after it won at the ALA awards, and I am glad I did!Heartwarming, Hello, Universe is populated with vividly imagined characters. Virgil, Valencia, the Tanaka sisters, and even the big bully, Chet, are wonderfully real and complex, and soon become friends (or enemies). Characters are also diverse, so students who might not normally see themselves in stories, can see themselves here. The plot, in a manner similar to Louis Sachar's Holes, is perfectly twisted and interconnected so that the reader walks away agreeing that, "There are no coincidences."It is perfect for upper elementary and middle schoolers, and grown-ups like me.

For some people this type of Occult stuff is ok but if you understand how dangerous it is to play with Ouija Boards then you want to read this review. This book teaches children how to invite evil into their lives that is masked in "fun" and how to increase your"imagination" skills. Choose wisely what you want to invite into your home.

A simple story that is soooo deep! Even though this story is for middle grades I think I will read it to my second graders because it is a very important book about friendship. We have a Bull in my classroom and I want them to understand how the best friendships work. I know it will spark some great conversations. Great study of character traits too. I love all of Lola's stories.

Open Book Reviews by Megan Schmelzerwww.openbookreviews.orgI love books that just completely surprise me, and Hello Universe, by Erin Entrada Kelly surprised me. I shouldn’t have been at all shocked that this book didn’t follow what I expected. I mean, come on, Erin Entrada Kelly is just a brilliant author! If you haven’t read any of her books before, I would absolutely recommend that you first read Hello Universe, but then I would tell you to go straight to reading Kelly’s book titled Land of the Forgotten Girls. It is also fantastic!Anyways, let me explain my thinking a bit further. I have read enough books in my life that it’s kind of transformed me into a self-proclaimed “mini book expert”, well at least a “children’s book expert.” Because I have read so many children’s literature books, I have gotten strong at predicting the plots. If you research the progress of children’s literature as it increases in text complexity, you will understand that books follow predictable plot structures. They have a set amount of characters, character changes, plot events, and setting details. Everything in children’s literature can be studied down to the science of the words on the page, and let me tell you… it has been studied down to the words on the page and how long a child’s brain processes the word. (I’ve read about it, and it is as painfully boring as it sounds. Add in the average time an eye focuses on a word before the brain processes the meaning and you’re in for a real snooze-fest.) Kelly followed the predictable structure and changes of a young adult novel; however, it was done in a different and fresh manner. So much so that I picked up and read this entire book in one sitting.Hello Universe focuses on several kids that are just looking to find their own pathways. They all have their own struggles, yet they haven’t yet been thrown together. That all changes when the main character, Virgil, and his pet guinea pig, Gulliver, are literally thrown into a pit located in the middle of the woods between all these kids’ houses, and this unlikely collection of characters’ now have their lives entangled together. The local bully, Chet “The Bull” Bullens is responsible for such a menacing prank. I guess when your nickname is “The Bull,” your, of course, are the bully in the story. Remember, I told you that children’s literature follows predictable patterns. It has to! We have young readers we have to connect with! The events that follow during Virgil’s time in the pit allow for all the characters to have moments of major change. Changes that all children today are continually being faced with. Kelly’s book questions the kids. She is challenging them to ask themselves: Are you going to be the bystander that just watches innocent kids be picked on in this world? Are you the bully doing the picking in order to prevent the world from seeing your own weakness? Or maybe, just maybe, are you the hero in the story? Are you the one that is going to defy everything and stand up for what is right?

Hello, Universe is carefully plotted and well-written. There's plenty of character development, humor, and insights about friendship and family and life. The story is absorbing, fun, and fast-moving. While nearly all the kid/parent relationships are dysfunctional, in this book that aided the story. At these characters' ages I did not consider my parents a total pain, but I knew lots of kids who did. As a Christian, I don't personally believe that the universe consciously intervenes in people's lives - although I'm completely convinced that God does. However, this did not detract from the book for me, and I don't see any reason that kids in strongly Christian families shouldn't read or wouldn't enjoy the book. I found it a ton of fun.

My 10 year old daughter read the hardcover edition in FOUR days, so I knew it had to be entertaining. After seeing that it won the Newbery Award I had to see what all the fuss was about. I don't have much time for reading, so I bought the Audible book. Holy crap the narrators really bring this book to life.

If you’ve ever been lonely because you were different, this is the book to shine light in your darkness and give you hope. There is no such thing ad coincidence.

Since it focusses on a couple of places extensively, with handy, informative city walks and lots of info about eating, sleeping and transportation, but skips entire parts of the Scandinavic countries, this guide is very good, and perhaps even more useful than the Lonely Planet, if you only visit those places described in the book and not the rest. Not all major destinations are listed, e.g. Trondheim and Göteborg are missing, hence my 4 out of 5 stars, but even with those cities missing I though it a very useful book. The city walks are excellent and somehow we often ended up in restaurants that were listed.I bought the ebook version which was very convenient on both phone and tablet, the only disadvantage being that you have to browse quite a bit between the city walk maps and the (very informative) written description.Places described in this guide book:- Copenhagen- Near Copenhagen (Roskilde and a few other sights)- Central Denmark (Ærø, Ærøskøbing, Odense)- Jutland (Aarhus, Legoland, Jelling, Himmelbjerget, Silkeborg (but oddly enough no mention is made of the main sight of the town, the Silkeborg Museum with the naturally mummified corpse of the Tollund man), Ribe)- Oslo- A tour suggestion via FlÃ¥m, Aurland and the Undredal- Sognefjord- Gudbrandsdal Valley and Jotunheimen Mountains- Bergen- South Norway (Stavanger, Setesdal, Hovden, Kristiansand)- Stockholm- Near Stockholm (Sigtuna, Uppsala)- Stockholm's Archipelago- Southeast Sweden (Växjö, Glass Country, Kalmar, Öland)- Helsinki- Tallinn

As a Rick Steves follower, I am a bit sad to give this guide a 4-star review rather than the more typical 5-star nod I would normally expect to write. But this guide has some problems potential buyers should be aware of. Our long-planned trip to Scandinavia included emphasis on the Malmo, Sweden and Stavanger, Norway areas. Malmo (Sweden's 3rd largest city) is excluded except for essentially less-than-a-page footnote treatment within the lengthy Copenhagen sections, and Stavanger (likewise, Norway's 3rd largest city) includes its own section but the tone is essentially "why bother" - "unenthusiastic" would be an overstatement. Most of the book's other content rises to the typical Steves level, but again, I felt like I must comment on the omissions. Maybe the flaws can be ascribed to trying to put all of Scandinavia (including Estonia) into the same book - at 800 pages as it is, was that too much to shoot for?

Good book but a bit outdated. Stating the obvious, you should check each attraction's website for the most accurate information.Descriptions about the culture and history of each country and region were great. But the overall recommendations felt a tad stuffy. Watch out when buying rail tickets via links from Rick Steves' website. I overpaid for a couple of tickets per the ticket agent in Oslo.

Rick Steve's never disappoints. Even though this version was a few years old, it still worked perfectly. I believe a newer version has been released, but my trip was before then. The book is a little heavy for carrying around in my purse all day, but in the book he says to cut the book and that is exactly what I did. I traveled to Denmark, Sweden, and Norway (and Germany, but that was a different book), so each leg of the trip I just had the necessary country's information with me. What I love the most about his books are his "walks". Exploring without a tour is one of my favorite things to do, and I am able to do this and still know what I am looking at because he explains it all in the book. I have purchased other brands- Lonely Planet, Frommer's etc, but Rick Steve's is always THE best. He also has information about museums and it is so thorough that you could skip actually entering the museum, haha! When in Europe you will definitely see other people with his books. In Stockholm a group saw what I was carrying and told me they couldn't live without him either.

This book was a good starting point for planning a trip to Norway. Key areas, such as Oslo, Bergen, and the Norway-in-a-Nutshell route are covered with Rick Steves' trademarked sensibility. Unfortunately, it's also incomplete: there's no mention of Geirangerfjord, Alesund, Trondheim, or indeed anything further north than Lom.Perhaps that's unfair of me: the primary value of the Rick Steves' series seems to be that it tells you what's worth seeing and what you can skip (whereas most competing travel books are simply a catalog of attractions). There's an argument to be made that these areas of Norway are redundant and hard to get to. However, I'm going to mark it down to trying to cover 5 countries in a single book (which seems to be a common absurdity in how the travel industry groups Scandinavia together).(Note that the Norway portions of this book seem to have been republished (1) as a standalone guide ("Rick Steves' Snapshot Norway") and (2) on the Rick Steves website.)Bottom line: this book can help if you're going to Norway, Denmark, or Sweden, but you'll need to generously supplement your planning with other resources (unless you're hitting up all 3 destinations). For Finland and Estonia (which receive relatively brief treatment), look elsewhere.

used this for a trip this summer to Norway and Iceland. Does not include info on Iceland. Limited info on Norway except for Bergen and Oslo. But was pretty helpful for our 2 days in Oslo and learned how to book a sleeper car on the Oslo to Bergen route, which by the way is much cheaper than booking a hotel room for the night in Oslo. Would have liked to see more about outdoor adventures in Norway like hiking and kayaking and more on Northern Norway. I love the Rick Steves format, maps and info. Pearls like when the ferries quit running or which areas of town you don't want to go to after dark or how to save money are always appreciated!
