Not all bad. I am currently working on getting back into a running program having taken a couple years off from my last marathon. I have trained using Hal's novice programs in the past with success for 5k, 10k, half and Marathon. This book seems to focus mostly on the basics of running and how to accomplish a marathon for the beginner. There are good reminders and suggestions (though somewhat vague) for how to stay on track with your training and where to start if it feels overwhelming. That being said, I'm not sure that this book gave me enough to accomplish my PR goals. There is too much that is left up to the reader to decide what is right for them, and I am finding it hard to sort through all of the information and what I actually need to be doing. Moral of the book seems to be that there is more than one way to train for a marathon and hard work and perseverance are key. The quotes and opinions of other runners and coaches that Hal mentions seem contradictory and confusing at times. There is very little nutritional advice in this book, and what is there is repetitive. One think that kind of bothered me about the book is that Hal keeps mentioning his accomplishments and experience in a constant, casual kind of way, like he feels he needs to keep reminding the reader that he is in fact an expert in the field. I wish he would just list the accomplishments at the beginning or end of the book like a CV and move on. If I didn't trust his knowledge, I wouldn't have bought the book. I do agree with the comments that say there is some outdated information and a lot of unnecessary 'fluff'. The book also includes some unnecessary speculation on women's involvement in running, saying that women are running more because it is 'trendy' was a bit condescending. Chapter 15 is unnecessary and sould be removed. Seriously Hal, take it out. It talks mostly about how a woman's period makes it harder for her to train and even implies that women are less competitive than men. There are alternative plans in the chapter for if your delicate and non-competitive female body is unable to handle the rigors of marathon training (note the sarcasm). In my experience, everyone will experience a setback or a bad week at some point in their training, not sure why the women where called out specifically.

I really enjoyed this book. It gives very detailed instruction in all facets of a marathon (stretching to recovery). The book also provides training plans for novice, intermediate and advanced. I'm currently using the training plan for Chicago Marathon in October.

This year I did the Chicago Marathon. I needed a book which will give me advise on physical and mental techniques to meet my goal of finishing the marathon as a new runner. This book was not it. I think that this book is for people who are regular runnings and have done multiple running races. For brand new runners I would recommend the “The Non-Runner’s Marathon Trainer” by David A.Whitsett, Forrest A.Dolgener, and Tanjala Mabon Kole. I followed that booked and was able to meet my goal of completing the 2016 Chicago Marathon.

I have purchased this book 4 times. I lent my first two copies to friends and they were never returned for a reason. I finally got wise and purchased a Kindle copy. This is my running bible. I have followed Hal Higdon's advice from the first day I decided to try running 4 years ago at the ripe old age of 43. I went from 5ks to 10ks to 15ks and 3 half marathons. I'm currently training for my first marathon because of Hal's sound and very wise advice. He has never steered me wrong. This book covers it all for runners of every level. I highly recommend this book to every runner - new or seasoned. Every time I read it, I learn something new. Run like Hal.

He's a good story teller and I'd like him as my coach - I think I'd succeed with his plans. I appreciate that he does both a high level view and then takes a step back and breaks it down should you need it. I also thought the chapter layout made sense with respect to race training.I don't feel this was as good as his half marathon book, and some of his tables just don't translate well to the Kindle format. Although updated, too much of the info dates to when the internet is new and explanations such as what posting to his website should be removed.

Was recommended this book by my physician who has run marathons for years and was just recently in the Boston marathon. I love it so far! It's so informative of not only what days and how long you should be training but also the background of marathons, the complexity of the cellular breakdown when running, what foods you should be eating and avoiding etc. It mentally prepares you to train!

I bought this for my 22 year old daughter as a Christmas gift who is running her 1st marathon in April. She read it in 2 weeks and raved about how great the book was and what valuable insight it provided - little things that she would have never thought about! She absolutely loved it and is currently in training! Great book and resource! Seller delivered product on time and as promised!

I chose that rating because it is okay. It is very simple and basic. It allows for anyone to consider a marathon. Even if you have never run a race. Oh Hal says he wouldn't recommend it but he is not going to tell you no. So, if you think you can, go ahead and try. His running plans are very conservative and I find it hard to believe that you could achieve a PR on any one of these plans. I like and respect the man and what he has done for running but the book is too basic if you are serious about running a serious marathon with a PR pace. If you are out to just finish, this is the book for you.

Author Scott J. Holliday’s “Punishment” has a lot going for it. It contains a great plot idea wrapped in a mystery/thriller story, nicely helped by talented writing. There are a few elements that bothered me about the book, but none that would cause me to encourage others to leave it on the shelf. The author’s overall theme, a world where memories are chipped and sold, is not new. However, the twist of using the science as a tool to aid in police investigations is something I haven’t read before (I do recall there was a movie some years back with similarities, but there is plenty of originality in this book that sets it apart). Mr. Holliday spends time educating readers exactly how this science works and even personalizes the machine the detectives use (the main character, John Barnes, hooks up to a machine the department has named “Eddie”). The author is very exact on this science, which is the foundation for the book. His subsequent description of the science and its effects add an additional layer of subtle horror as readers experience the story through Detective Barnes. The story is neatly packaged, providing the clues left by a psychopathic killer and then leading readers to a realistic ending that neatly ties all the story threads together. The author’s writing is descriptive and entertaining, at times presenting images in a unique way (“…the Barnes brothers’ bedroom looked like a resale shop had barfed in it”). Detailing what is necessary and writing in an engaging manner are two of the author’s five-star efforts. While it slightly bothered me that a police detective wouldn’t know the proper terminology for his gun (magazine, not clip), it was the author’s excellent description of the science that also served to illuminate a potential flaw in the story. Mr. Holliday is very clear that that memories of the killer’s victims are being built into the host’s brain (the only time the words “…someone else’s consciousness…” are used is in the From the Editor section when she describes the book). It is apparent to readers that something else is going on, but the story never addresses this. Perhaps the author thought it was obvious, but as it was his words that produced the setting for the tale, I hoped he would enlarge upon this element in the storyline. I also thought the relationship with Jessica was a bit forced and could have been embellished, which would have granted her more realism and less appearance as nothing more than a plot device.Overall, a good blend of scifi and a thriller. “Punishment” is a quick, easy read that was entertaining and enjoyable. Four stars.

This was an fun/addictive read that I couldn't put down. Part of me was worried that it would seem 'gimmicky' when I read the synopsis about a detective and a machine, but I am really glad I looked past that to give it a go. I was about 30 pages in when I got to a point that I couldn't put it down and just powered through the whole thing! It's pretty intense in parts and was pretty grueling but I couldn't stop until I knew what happened. I was worried about the ending as I've read some duds, in terms of endings, recently. Bad and rushed endings of books can really ruin a book for me. Additionally, since it's a part of a series I thought it might be one of those super-long waits for the resolution of a stressful cliffhanger (I also don't like those). However, it was actually a really satisfying conclusion with an interesting twist. I can't wait to read the next one.

The premise of this story is what pulled me in; to retreive memories from crime victims and use them to solve their muder. But what does that do to the person who has to re-live the memories of dying over and over again? John is a great protagonist, flawed and beat-up, and the first meeting with him is not one that endeared me to him. Keep reading. He gets more likeable, especially once he meets Jessica and you begin to understand what it is that drives him. He ends up being more than I expected, and thank you, Mr. Holliday for not ending this on a really bad note. I thought you might and that would have ruined it for me! It's a fast read, griping and rewarding. Hoping there are more books in the series.

Look, this isn't a bad book. But if you're between it and an alternative you find appealing, go for door number two. Others have already mentioned that, par for the course in the book's genres, female characters are cardboard cut-outs and the romance is forced. But the biggest disappointment is that Holliday wastes a compelling sci-fi premise by skipping any world-building. The science is advanced enough and its ethical/social implications substantial and far-reaching enough that this book simply can't be set in our world. The unimaginable differences between 2016 and 2017 alone show that even _our_ world can't be set in our world.I continually found this issue jarring and whatever it was intended to achieve -- it didn't. It just felt lazy, rushed, and sloppy. You could read any random okay thriller while imagining this technology crammed in there and have about the same experience. But it is an _okay_ random thriller.Mr. Holliday, if you happen to see this, take a look at The Last Policeman. It's also a speculative thriller in a world much like ours (apart from one Very Big Difference). It has the kind of richly developed world-building I missed in your novel.

I’d actually bump this one up to 3.5 stars. Good solid writing, decent thriller, and pacing was handled well also. There was just something about this book that didn’t sell it all the way for me. This may be the first time I’ve ever said this about a book, instead of the reverse, but I think this would have been better as an episode of Black Mirror or a movie instead of a book. There was a lot of subtle nuance that was missing that adds an element of atmosphere to a good thriller and I feel like the writing was somewhat lacking in that regard. It had all the right parts, and everything added up the way it should, but it just fell short of the atmospheric tenseness and draw in that most thrillers have. All in all, still worth a read.

I truly enjoyed reading this book. I read constantly and have my entire life, so I'm not picky about genre. In reading so much, I often find myself jumping ahead to the predicted conclusion with fairly decent accuracy. This story was truly original in a way I haven't experienced in awhile. Loved it. Loved not having a freaking clue what would happen next. Would make an outstanding movie.

Amazon.com Review

Investors -- be they aggressive or conservative, self-directed or professionally managed -- are always on the lookout for an edge. And in James O'Shaughnessy's What Works on Wall Street: A Guide to the Best-Performing Investment Strategies of All Time, they'll find a solid one: authoritative analysis of popular practices from the past. The author examines three decades of stock market data to show how 15 of the most common investment tactics have fared over time.

From the Author

What Works on Wall Street was probably the most anticipated investment book of 1996. James O'Shaughnessy gained unprecedented access to Standard & Poor's Compustat database and back-tested the returns generated by various clearly defined investment approaches over the past 40 years. The book challenges quite a bit of the conventional wisdom about portfolio management and is a compelling, although statistically flawed, work. In What Works on Wall Street, O'Shaughnessy examines the performance of the highest and lowest price/earnings, price/sales, price/book value, relative strength, yield and earnings growth stocks over various periods, trying to find which types of companies tended to perform best. Although you can quibble with a lot of the data, the sheer magnitude of the task O'Shaughnessy has undertaken is impressive. His final, multifactor strategies that generated the best investments over time are very interesting, particularly the Cornerstone Value approach, which is very similar to the Dow Dividend Approach with a few other bells and whistles. O'Shaughnessy's book and its findings should be read, discussed and disputed by all investors. However much one can criticize the work for being too focused on the plight of professional money managers looking to pick fifty stocks and not individual investors looking to pick five, the information is valuable and compelling. The only warning that I would give to readers is to be aware of a methodological error in the way O'Shaughnessy does the statistics. Because of the time required, O'Shaughnessy and his team looked at how the 50 highest or lowest stocks in any particular group performed. Extrapolating the performance of extreme data points to the entire set of data being studied is not entirely correct, as there are many processes in nature where the middle actually does not act like the extremes. Mass and velocity in physics are one example, where super-light and super-dense objects both do not obey the laws of physics, while everything in between does. With this caveat, I think an investor can learn a lot from the book.

A couple of reviews I read before purchase claimed that there was not much new material in the fourth edition compared to the third. Those reviews are not correct. There are a several new strategies tested and (somewhat) improved presentation of the data. When the first edition came out it was a pioneering attempt to quantify various well-known trading strategies through backtesting. That was pretty valuable! Now, of course, everybody backtests their strategies before losing money on them. Still, this book is a good introduction to popular strategies (especially in the "value" realm), and an overview of what sort of things you can learn from backtesting. It is also fair to point out that O'Shaughnessy is far from consistent in his testing, and his charts and graphs tend to make up in volume what they lack in clarity. In the end, if you are learning the art of stock screening, you likely want this book. But you should plan to learn a lot more than what you get here.

Investment books taut a number of filtering strategies to find profitable stock investments. This book provides valuable information on what works and what doesn't work. The method is systematic and scientific. The book contains a lots of data, but less analysis. It remains, nonetheless, a valuable work and belongs on the shelf of most serious investors. The one significant weakness in O'Shaugnessy method is that it does not reflect the impact of a more complete trading system that includes money management and technically-based entry and exit poitns. The investment plan used to compare stock selection strategies is to run a stock filter annually and to rebalance the portfolio into the 10, 25 or 50 stocks in the screen on an equal weight basis. There are no stop loss orders, no position sizing based on volatility, and no trade timing based on whether the security is trending down or in a trading range.O'Shaughnessy concludes that value-oriented factors (price-to-sales, price-to-book, price-to-cash flow, price-to-earnings, and dividend yield) are much more important to stock performance long term than growth factors (earnings growth rate, return on equity, etc.), except for relative strength. While this may be true using the annual rebalance approach under which O'Shaughnessy tested the stock selection strategies, it may not be true in a more complete investment/trading system that includes technical entry and exit points to ensure that the buyer does not pay too much for a given stock or run to much downside risk, position sizing and stop orders. I would like to see these results re-run in conjunction with a basic objective trading system that includes a money management component (i.e., stop loss, risk-based position sizing, etc.). It may be that value factors are vital to O'Shaughnessy selection strategy because they serve as a proxy for the missing money management and timing components of a complete trading system.Despite this weakness, the book is a significant contribution to our understanding of which fundamental factors are most important to selecting less risky, more profitable investments for the long term. Recommended.

This is the rare 5 star ***** book. It is no nonsense and gives you exactly what its title suggests. It shows what has really worked on Wall Street from 1951 to 1996 by using the Standard and Poors compustat data base to simulate what would have happened if an investor (or mutual fund) would have bought the top 50 stocks meeting the criteria measurement. Example: Highest P/E ratios, top 50 price increases, top 50 price decreases, best dividends, high or low book to price value, etc.He goes further by breaking the top 50 into only the large cap meeting this criteria and if he bought out of all stocks available. He measures stocks and their performance from almost every imaginable angle. It is fascinating and educational to see what the final dollar amount is for each investment approach. He also shows how each style performed in each decade and how each percentile of stock did in each category.(Example: how the top 5 stocks did with low P/E's versus the bottom 5 in the top 50 stock group, this helps the individual stock investor focus his investments). Here are the books big findings. If you took $10,000 and invested it in 1951 and invested it in the following top 50 stocks that met the following criteria, while resetting it every year to match your criteria, in 1996 you would have had:Top 3 ways to investPSR<1,high relative strength,All stocks $12,999,698Earnings yield>5,High relative strength,All stocks $12,570,451Price/Book<1,High relative strength, all stocks $12,552,352Worst 3 ways to investLowest 1-year relative strength, All stocks $29,666High PSR, All stocks $64,220High Pcfl,All Stocks $224,741I really like this book because It is scientific, not opionated and shows that Warren Buffet was right all a long, buy stocks that are a great value based on their sales, and price to book with low P/E's and strong relative price strength and you will always win in the long term.

I must recant my earlier 1-star review. While Mr. O's career switches - fund manager to Netfolio back to fund manger -- are still anything but encouraging, one of his stock picking methods is currently working. I discovered this by looking at the portfolio of one of the funds he started. Basically, it's the stuff I own and it's doing better than the averages. (In fact, it's doing better than any fund group except gold and bear market funds.) O'Shaughnessy offers several methods for stock selection based on his analysis of several decades of data. The statistical work may be flawed as others have said but his methods are making money! (In this bear market, that is quite a boast.) His challenges of well-known methods that don't work may be even more relevant. (First rule of investing -- don't lose money.)

From the Inside Flap

More personally revealing than anything Achebe has written, Home and Exile-the great Nigerian novelist's first book in more than ten years-is a major statement on the importance of stories as real sources of power, especially for those whose stories have traditionally been told by outsiders. In three elegant essays, Achebe seeks to rescue African culture from narratives written about it by Europeans. Looking through the prism of his experiences as a student in English schools in Nigeria, he provides devastating examples of European cultural imperialism. He examines the impact that his novel Things Fall Apart had on efforts to reclaim Africa's story. And he argues for the importance of writing and living the African experience because, he believes, Africa needs stories told by Africans.

I love Achebe. So I love this collection of three of his essays. His prose is clean and concrete, he is clear and intelligent. Since these are from public lectures he gave at various points, it's easy to read them as they were meant to be engaging. A great little book for anyone interested in learning more about Achebe and postcolonial studies.

This little book from Achebe is great for its exploration of intellectual colonization and its consequences in Africa. The presentation is fluid and elegant.....a piece of art from the master story teller and humanist. I recommend this book to all those who believe that every culture should have a place in the global table and that diversity makes the world a better place. I am a great fan of Achebe and this book has lived up to the high billing I have of him. Kudos to a great man of letters.

Interesting views from someone who lived in the villages when the missionaries came . Not a very positive view of the missions.

good book...

Interesting read

We need more book on Africa written by African's available to American readers. Mr. Achebe will be surely missed but he leaves us a treasure in his books

Long live the proud son of Africa and our respected statesman.Achebe the honest and truthful dispenser of both sides of the story. Colonial griots (to borrow Achebe's words) such as Elspeth Huxley and other apologists have for too long been left alone to justify the dispossession of precious lands and cultures. Until the proud son of Africa made them eat their own words and exposed them for what they are. Dishonest griots deftly laying the groundwork for self-enrichment at the expense of peace loving and decent Human Beings.Chinua Achebe as exemplified by his few but precious books writes not to make money but only when he must say something useful. Unlike modern day "authors" who are more about money than substance. I have no doubt Achebe can write profound and moving accounts of African and world issues at the rate of one book a day but he chose only to spend his time teaching. It is obvious why the Nobel Prize went to Wole Soyinka instead of Chinua Achebe. Achebe refuses to write for a "foreign" audience and does not take his marching orders from anybody. He is his own man. Africans and honest people all over the world have in their own ways given Achebe the best prize in the world.Continuous interest in his worthwhile classics such as Things Fall Apart,The Man of the People,No longer at Ease,Anthills of the Savannah, Morning Yet on Creation Day,Hopes and Impediments and many others.Home and Exile may be a small book but has enough three pence (from Achebes "somebody knock me down and have three pence!") to liberate nations and individuals from the grip and stench of colonial and racist apologia masquerading as literature.Long live Achebe, proud son of Africa and citizen of the world. To know Achebe (by reading his books) is to know how to be an unassuming and proud Human Being who quitely and calmly states his truth for the benefit of us all.

Since the book is already well-summarized above, I'll just give my own reaction.I've read a number of Achebe's novels and one essay (the excellent critique of Heart of Darkness) and really enjoyed the "backstage" feeling of hearing the author's first person voice - an insightful and kindly voice. For me, the effect of Achebe's strong positions is heightened by the dignified presentation, and of course by the poignant and funny stories from his own life that he uses to illustrate those positions. As compared to one of my other favorite authors, James Baldwin, Achebe's writing includes less calls to action, and more explanation. For instance, even in his sharp critique of Vidiadhar Naipaul's novels, Achebe's first priority is to shine light on the processes that led to Naipul's failures of vision. I think people who have read Achebe's fiction or essays and liked it, or generally care about literature from an indigenous or "Third World" perspective will really enjoy this short text. Definitely worth the cost, and may be available from the library.
