A very interesting book with lots of information. I wasn't happy with some of the photos - they were too dark or too small. Perhaps the size of this book's edition may have led to that. The historical information was fabulous. There are even directions to travel with surrounding information also. A very complete book. You begin to understand how valuable these structures were and still remain!

This book has awesome pictures and gives you nice information about lighthouses, but the directions for several of the lighthouses in New England were very hard to follow. I haven't used it to check out other lighthouse, but with the direction for the lighthouse in New England, I would suggest looking up your own directions and don't rely on the directions in the book.

I've read the entire Sharpe series, the Archer series and the Grail Quest series, along with this one. I've thoroughly enjoyed them all. For what it's worth, the main character in each of these stories seems to me to be pretty much the same person. That's not unusual in fiction. For example, in Robert Heinlein's works, the protagonist in all of his stories strikes me to be the same person as well. That being said, there's not a great deal of character development, per se, but the protagonists are easy to like and the antagonists are easy to despise. Merlin is a little hard to figure out as you're never really sure who's side he's on. As a matter of fact, at one point he even states that he's NOT ON ANYBODY'S side and that he has his own agenda and everyone else in England is just playing a role as far as he's concerned. Still, if you like historical fiction or you're looking for a story that will totally consume you for a week or two, go with Bernard Cornwell. You won't be disappointed.

This is the second in the Arthurian trilogy as written by Bernard Cornwell. This is a must read for anyone interested in Arthurian lore; it is quite possibly the best rendition of Arthur I've ever read, and I've read more than a few sagas featuring Arthur. Most people, when they think of Arthur will either reference the Chretien de Troyes work (which did serve to revitalize interest in Arthur, and he took his inspiration from the older Welsh traditions) or the John Boorman movie, Excalibur, which was partially based on de Troyes' work. I read de Troyes' work as a kid, and then years later as an adult, I picked up a more literal translation. If I could sum that up in one word, it'd be "flowery". Small wonder that the concept of chivalry should be born from it as it tells tales of impossible feats by impossibly courteous and solicitous men who are also trained killers. Still, since the age of ten I've always wanted to be a knight and who better than a knight of the Table Round?Anyhow, as I've gotten older, my taste in literature has made a predictable curve toward more realistic fare- that is not to say that I do not love fantasy because I do- whether it is in games, movies or books, but I appreciate books (and the authors who wrote them) that at least make the attempt to tell the story from a more realistic point of view. Arthur, and his warriors, as depicted here are not the paragons of virtue as described in the aforementioned book and movie. These men are much more realistic; at times plagued by doubt and fear, they live, they love and they make war but it is the way that they do it that grabs the reader. There are no stock characters here save one, and even that one has realistic motivations and sensibilities, albeit of the bad variety.The trilogy is set during the beginning of the 5th century (which is not arbitrary as there has been some evidence and loads of conjecture about a time in history that Arthur might have existed in; some scholars argue that he was a Romano-Brit cavalry officer with a foot in both camps. I happen to like that assertion as it makes a sort of sense to me as there is absolutely no record of Arthur in 12th century England (or Wales where the tales first originated) and certainly not in any later period as the film would suggest (with the use of full plate harness armor which would not become the norm until the 15th century). This Arthur is a seemingly-simple character, slow to anger, quick to laugh; commands the respect of his troops and any soldiers who first meet him. He is also a consummate warrior and leader, but anyone familiar with Arthur already knows that. So what sets this book apart, besides the referential timeline? The supporting cast. One of the things that I look for in a book is how strong are the other characters- are they stock, two dimensional, essentially blah? If that's the case, I'll still read, but I probably won't enjoy it as much. So not the case here; the book is written from the perspective of a displaced Saxon youth who will eventually prove himself worthy of Arthur. In addition to a strong supporting (well written) cast, Cornwell's depictions of battle are truly worth reading, then re-reading to absorb all of the layers he gives you. Most books of this genre will feature battles, and usually there's one or another hero who is focused on but even then, you don't get the impression of actual battle. You read it, you process it mentally, then you move onto the next portion of the story. Cornwell gets down to the nitty gritty; the horror of the shield wall, where heros are made, but even more are killed. When the shieldwalls of opposing armies meet, it is a loud reverberating clash, followed by the ring of metal weapons on wooden and leather shields, metal helmets and armor, the smell of the warrior across from you trying his damnedest to kill you while you return the favor as strongly as you might. His breath, mead-soaked (since it takes a lot of courage to charge a shield wall, most warriors prefer to do so after getting drunk) and rank, the stench comes off in waves from the unwashed bodies of everyone around you- including and not limited to the smells of urine and feces for those who couldn't hold their water or their bowels. Blood...blood everywhere; no one's clean after a battle. The heroes, the great slaughterers are usually covered in it from head to toe! Ok, I won't give anymore of the story away - suffice it to say, all three books are superbly written, I've read them multiple times and in fact, I've just finished reading the trilogy and that prompted me to revisit the Saxon Tales saga, written by the same author.

Cornwell continues the story of Arthur in this second book of The Warlord Chronicles. This is certainly a unique view of Arthur's story as opposed to the legends of Camelot normally available. I expect Cornwell captures a more realistic view of early England, and it shares similarities with other medieval period stories. I was uncertain about the story being narrated by one of the characters (later in life); however, it is well done and I enjoy the brief glimpses of the narrator's present time when writing the story. I would warn the story is more about the life of Derfel, friend and servant of Arthur's. Derfel's character is more fully developed than Arthur's. Nonetheless I have enjoyed both books and just started the third and last.

The Warlord Chronicles is Bernard Cornwell's interpretation of the story of King Arthur. The trilogy is comprised of The Winter King, Enemy of God, and Excalibur and is told from the perspective of Derfel Cardan, a man that Britain's greatest druid Merlin plucked as a child from a death pit to become Arthur's most trusted warrior.Cornwell's is not the romanticized version of Malory's Le Morte D'Arthur or T.H. White's The Once and Future King. The historical Arthur is thought to have lived around the year 500, just after the Romans had abandoned Britain and the beginning of the Dark Ages. Cornwell stays true to that time. There are no knights in shining armour, but warlords in old Roman armour. There is no magic, only superstition and coincidence. There are no stone castles, but forts made of wood and earth. Decay is in the air. The Roman cities crumble, and knowledge of their construction and repair fades.The story begins with Uther Pendragon, King of Dumnonia and the High King of Britain, nearing death. His grandson, Mordred, is his heir; however, Mordred is only a baby. Arthur, a bastard of Uther, takes an oath of loyalty to Mordred and is chosen as Mordred's guardian. Until Mordred is old enough to rule Dumnonia himself, Arthur is effectively the king.Arthur dreams to unite the various kingdoms of Britain and push out the invading land-hungry Saxons. This is the story of Arthur. Over and over again, just when you think that Arthur's dream is to become a reality, the dream is shattered due to his own weaknesses, his sense of justice, the machinations of kings and those closest to him, the conflict between Christians and pagans, or most often his oath of loyalty to Mordred. Certainly, for a moment there is Camelot, but even then dark clouds are on the horizon.I highly recommend these books. As usual, Cornwell excels at describing the battles and the single combats. His take on characters is refreshing. For example, Lancelot is considered the greatest warrior in the land, not because of any actual accomplishments, but because of his ability to control his image, manipulate others, and pay the bards to sing his high praises; in truth, he is a coward. I've read many versions of the Arthur story. While it is difficult to rate one version against another as they are often so different, this is one of the best.

Pachinko by Min Jin Lee is a family saga about a four generations of a Korean family that is set in Korea and Japan. It’s a National Book Award finalist, and, in what may be an even greater honor than that, it made my Favorite Books list.I have found that it is easier to explain why I don’t like a particular book or to point out a book’s flaws than it is to explain why I absolutely loved one. It’s like explaining why a rainbow is beautiful. I can talk about how the colors are pretty or how it made me feel, but there is something about rainbows, sunsets, and the best works of art that transcends easy explanation. You just have to experience them. Read Pachinko.The format of the book is straightforward. It proceeds chronologically from about 1900-ish to 1989 and follows various characters that belong to one family. It never sprawls out of control – there aren’t 37 second-cousins that you will have to keep track of – and there aren’t flash-backs and flash-forwards that could potentially cause confusion. There are occasional Japanese or Korean words sprinkled around, but their meaning is apparent from the context. I don’t speak a lick of those languages, and I followed everything without ever having to consult a dictionary. The prose is simple and straightforward, generally consisting of short, direct sentences. There’s not a lot of fluff. Pachinko is a great big sprawling family saga set in Korea and Japan and spanning 70 years. Sunja is a teenaged girl living with her mother, who runs a boarding house in a fishing village in Korea. All Sunja knows is work, but she does not dislike this. It’s what her mother does, too. Then she meets a fish broker, a suave older man who seduces her, impregnates her, and then informs her he’s married. He says he’ll support her, but she wants nothing more to do with him. Her face is saved when a missionary staying at the boarding house says he will marry her and raise the child as his own. They move to Japan, where Koreans are looked down on. Thence starts a new round of endless working, something all the characters will know for all their lives, whether it’s physical toil or mental.The tale follows Sunja and her family for four generations. I found the first half, which dealt mainly with Sunja and her sister-in-law who became her best friend, more engrossing than the latter half that was about her descendants. That section was interesting, but the stark contrast between Sunja, her mother, and sister-in-law and their husbands, and the younger generations was jolting. I just found the women more interesting than the men. They are so strong, mentally and physically. But their lives are very circumscribed compared to the men. The men are city people; the women rural in outlook even when living in the city.As Koreans in Japan, they are considered visitors even when they were born there. There were jobs they could never have; it was illegal to rent to them. When a boy turns fourteen, he has to register, be fingerprinted and interviewed, and he has to ask for permission to remain in Japan, even though he was born there and has never been to Korea. This process will be repeated every three years. And this was in the 1970s, not the 1870s. Getting Japanese citizenship was extremely difficult. But Sunja’s family does get ahead, attaining a comfortable living.This novel is both an absorbing tale of family dynamics and a fascinating look at another culture and time. It’s a big book, but I read it quickly, unable to put it down. The characters are so well developed that I really cared about them, especially Sunja and her sister-in-law. Sometimes I wanted to strangle one or another of the characters, because they are just totally realized humans. Excellent book.

This book deserves 10 stars !! I highly recommend this fabulous ,fairytaleesque ,love story to everyone! What an epic journey Lucinda Riley takes us on. Although the book is titled "The Seven Sisters", we son learn the story revolves around 6 adoptive daughters and the seventh so far is a mystery. When the sisters reunite at their childhood home, or castle,on Lake Geneva to mourn their fathers death, they soon learn there are plenty of secrets to go around. In this first installment of this series Riley focuses on Maia, the older of the clan. Each of the girls are given envelopes upon their fathers death that gives them each a clue as to their own heritage. Thus begins Maia's journey ,taking her to Rio in the 1920's. I love how this story intertwines the past and present while we learn about her true lienage of 2 incredible women and their courageous love stories!

Maia D'Apliese is the eldest of six girls adopted by the wealthy billionaire Pa Salt. After his sudden death the girls get together at their childhood home, a secluded mansion on the shores of Lake Geneva. There they learn about their father’s legacy and find clues that will allow them discover their ancestral origins.As with most of Lucinda Riley’s books the story is told over 2 timelines one set in the past and one in the present.In the book we follow Maia on her journey to uncover her roots, which takes her to Brazil and a dilapidated mansion in a wealthy suburb of Rio de Janeiro. As the story unfolds we learn from the past how Maia’s life is connected to Issabella Bonifacio and how the construction of the famous Christ statue on Corcovado Mountain in Rio is part her heritage. In the present we see how Maia copes with the loss of her adopted father while coming to grips with the knowledge of her familial beginnings. A journey of self-discovery, of learning to trust oneself and others in the process of healing.The story is vividly described, the characters are complex but interesting. They display real emotions like love and fear while demonstrating loyalty, passion and compassion, making them convincing and easy to relate to.From a historical perspective the book is also set in an interesting period in Rio de Janeiro. The 1920’s to 1930’s, the heydays, when coffee exports were booming at the time the Christ statue was under construction.This is the first book in the Seven Sisters series. Each book can be read separately as the plot concludes nicely at the end. Some teasers are left unanswered which helps set up the next book in the series but without leaving the reader hanging or forcing you to get the next book in the series.Overall this is an interesting evocative story. The book is well written and the story flows well. Fans of historical fiction and woman’s fiction will love it.

For me, this book started out so well - I really enjoyed the book's setup for what the series, the introduction of Pa and Marina, as well as the adoption and arrival of the 6 sisters, and beginnings of the mystery of the 7th. After Pa's death, the solicitor gives each sister a letter which, I expect will send them all off on a road trip to find their birth roots. And so we begin on eldest sister Maia journey to Rio and Paris, and then, for me, it slid into romantic tosh. I could tolerate one romantic thread, but not two. The historical story in particular was (for me) a grinding read, the contemporary tale was more bearable, but a little predictable. I remain, however, intrigued by the series' setup, and think I will go to book two (Ally's story?) because despite my boredome reading about the romances, I am curious about the overarching story (I just hope it has a little more complexity to it than the Rio leg).

This book was recommended by a friend. It took about a chapter to grab me and it didn;t let go. This is the first story in the series. There are six sisters all adopted by a very wealthy man in Geneva. He dies and leaves clues to the secret of each of their births. Fascinating and each story has sections that go way back in time to a key person that relates to the sister's birth history. Beautiful writing, fascinating countries. I am now on book three then will have to wait for book four!

Cute and simple. Have been eying this deck for weeks via Kick Starter. Was pleasantly surprised when I saw that it was available on Amazon. Nice texture and flexible card stock. The color is cute and bubbly, and I’m a fan of the drawings—love it all around!

I purchased this as a birthday gift for a friend who is interested in tarot decks, and they really loved it. It’s a great way to support an independent artist as well.

So I bought this deck during the kickstarter, and I love it so much. Then my cousin came over and saw it amongst my collection and fell in love. So I bought her one for her birthday. It was a big hit.

Like others who have pre ordered this deck, the one I received was cut very poorly, with many of the animal cards shifted to the far right or left, leaving a huge white strip to one side, instead of an even border. My crow card even had a small sliver of paper peel off it. :(I really love the artwork and concepts, but I am now waiting on a replacement, which will hopefully have the quality of production that other reviews have raved about. I had to subtract a star for the glaring issues with the cards themselves. I was really looking forward to this deck, so this was a pretty big disappointment. How does that kind of error get past quality control?**UPDATE**My replacement deck arrived, and the cards are cut better than the last, but there are still a handful of cards that are noticeably off-center.I'd probably be quite upset if I had paid MSRP of $40 for this, because incorrectly cut cards at that price point is really disappointing. Thankfully Amazon was less expensive and allowed for this exchange in the first place.I am still bummed that my replacement isn't as well made as what others seem to have. Conflicted as to whether I should try one last time and hope I don't get a dud. I'd rate this 3.5 if I could, but I'm going to revise my score to 3 because the inconsistencies aren't very excusable in my opinion. Especially for such a popular Tarot figure.

I recently fell in love with the Wild Unknown Tarot by Kim Krans, so I was so excited when I saw this one being released. I am a huge fan of archetypes and I think animal archetypes play a huge aspect in how we navigate the world. I love the art and with Kim’s words it’s like I’m hearing advice from a wise friend, and there is something about the intentional nature of these decks that I am able to tap right into the collective consciousness and the information just streams through. My sincerest of thank you’s.

I love this deck.I ordered The Wild Unknown Tarot last October, and I was thrilled to find out that Kim was creating an Oracle deck to go along with it. I placed my order for this deck in early March, and received it on the first of April. It’s everything that I was expecting it to be. It’s so beautiful.Everyone is talking about uneven cutting. I don’t have that issue. What my issue IS, is that the cards don’t seem to sit properly on top of one another. Whereas my Wild Unknown Tarot cards do. I will attach a photo to show what I mean.One photo is of my tarot deck, which sits flat even when I’m not pressing the deck together. The other is my Animal Spirit deck, which doesn’t sit flat unless I squeeze the deck together.I’ve tried to deal with it, but it annoys me, so I scheduled a replacement to be sent to me.

This deck is absolutely beautiful in every way. The cards have a smooth matte finish that feel very organic while shuffling. The imagery is breathe taking and I easily get lost in the art! The book provides the cards with complex personality which I love.They are not only amazing on their own, but they make a great compliment to my Wild Unknown Tarot deck. I have been using them as guidance while doing tarot readings.Kim Krans is a beautiful genius!

I was really excited to receive the cards, especially as I had seen the Wild Unknown deck, but overall the car quality is much poorer and the cards were not even cut properly. it seems that this was a more downscale mass produced version for everyone else. So after pre-ordering and anxiously waiting I was severely disappointed that such a nice product has been ruined by poor production.

I absolutely love this deck! Not only does the deck have the obvious Animal element to it but, it also brings the 7 Chakras into the mix. All cards also have an 'Element': Earth, Air, Fire, Water & Spirit, assigned to them, which adds another layer of meaning to the Cards.
