I can't say enough great things about the Frontline series from Marko Kloos. I just wrapped up book 4, Chains of Command, and it further cements the series as one of my favorites in the Sci-Fi genre. The Characters continue to develop and grow into their increasing responsibilities in the NAC, but their increase rank does not keep them out of the line of fire for very long. Where many other military science fiction series seem to lose the excitement as the characters increase in rank and their story becomes more politically based, Kloos manages to keep his characters involved in the action.The more I read Frontlines, the more I start to compare them to Wraith Squadron series of the StarWars Legends EU by Aaron Allston. Both story lines are ripe with action, a fair amount of humor, and the character development continues perfectly from book to book .There isn't much I could say new about the series. Chains of Command follows the same format as the previous three books, Terms of Enlistment, Lines of Departure, and Angles of Attack. The story continues back out into space to another new colony, the seemingly heaven like planet of Arcadia, where Grayson must now lead an entire platoon after accepting a promotion to lowly Lieutenant. The main villain conflict in the story is back to being human, but what side is actually the villain gets to be a much blurrier picture with the thought provoking finish on this one.The saddest part about finishing this one is that so far I can't find a release date on the next one! These have been my turn to books for breaking my reading slump during a busy summer where the distractions have taken me away from bookstores and bookmarks far to many times for my liking. With Fall finally in the air up here in the far north, I would love a few more books of his to curl up in the reading nook with.
I enjoy military science fiction. With a few exceptions, many of these books are heavy on action, but not necessarily great on character development or realistic plot scenarios. The hallmark of all the books in this series is that it portrays a believable future, delivers plenty of action and portrays many likable and mostly believable characters.I just discovered this series and pretty much inhaled all four books in as many days. For me it's like one long book.I won't take the time to go into details about the plot, but the story of a young man escaping from a future welfare project from Hell and enlisting in the military to eventually battle mindless, unstoppable aliens is an exciting read. Marko Kloos is a great young writer!You don't need to start from the first book, but you really should. This is a terrific series and I can't wait for the next book.
First of all, I love Marko's series. I preordered this book and pretty much ripped it open when it became available. Chains continues the progression of the battle against the Lankies, setting up what presumably will be the final battle in the next installment. The author clearly has military experience and that gets conveyed into a level of detail that makes the battles feel realistic and the world authentic. Which is what the series is really about--above all things, soaking the reader in a fully realized experience of being in the military of the future.Yet in some ways, this is becoming a problem. The universe Kloos has created begins to feel a bit dull. Just like the military, where every hour of intensity is surrounded by days of monotony, since the story has now painted humanity into a corner where there's not much wonder left to find or things to do as humanity's colonial commonwealth crumbles, I felt like much of the book was just kind of "stuff." This won't stop me from being a fan or continuing to read. And Chains delivers for the most part on the action. But I miss the sense of the unknown and ensuing excitement of the first two books.Keep writing Marko--this is by far one of the best series on the market--but don't sacrifice the fantasy escape for the sake of detail or procedure.
After years of having Marko Kloos' stories suggested to me by Amazon, I finally gave in and bought one. Oh, Amazon...why did I doubt you? I liked the story so much, I ended up buying his entire series and then binge reading it over two weeks (ignoring some critical projects late at night, but loving it).Kloos' gift here is that he captures much of what it means to be a Soldier and really understands the tribalism military people feel for their branches (there is great pride in being a Soldier, Sailor, Airman, or Marine and in that comes some real rivalries and competition). He has worked in some of the boredom, the "hurry up and wait" that goes on, and really gets into some of the drivers for military people.This story is pretty good, with some twists and turns and (spoilers ahead) fills in the sordid details of what happened when the NAC government left Earth with the Lankies on earth's doorstep and what our protagonist, Andrew Grayson, does to help remedy this situation. I was kept in suspense throughout the book. Yes, some events happened with little surprise, but definitely not to the point of making it boring. Mr. Kloos describes his world well and I felt like I could "see" the world he has created for his players.My greatest endorsement for this book is that I eagerly preordered the next book in the series and am looking forward to reading how the NAC and SRA take it to the Lankies.
