Humorous and often touching memoir of the making of a wonderful film. A walk down memory lane. Thanks so much.

Probably the fastest I've ever listened to an audiobook. The impressions alone are worth the money, not to mention the great stories about the making of "The Princess Bride." I couldn't stop listening. What impressed me the most was the clear love and admiration the cast and crew had and still have for each other. You can HEAR it in their voices as they talk about each other. Most loved was Andre the Giant. I loved hearing the different impressions of him from Elwes, Reiner, and I believe Sarandon or Guest. You hear how much training and work went into the Greatest Swordfight in Modern History. To hear that Robin Wright and Cary Elwes wanted to keep doing more takes of the final kiss is beyond adorable. Rob Reiner sounds like the nicest guy ever, and I now want to read every book William Goldman ever wrote. I'm sure a dustcover poster is cool, but to me, hearing the actors themselves read and talk about their experiences was beyond worth it.

I pre-ordered the book as soon as I heard about it, since The Princess Bride has been one of my favorite movies since I saw it in the theater so many years ago.The book does not disappoint and the short review is thus:If you're a fan of THIS movie, just buy the book.If you'd like a behind the scenes look of what goes on to get a movie made, buy this book. I can't emphasize this enough. By twenty-five percent in, I'd already learned more about the process of making a movie (findind the talent, what it feels like to learn to sword fight, the purpose of a table-read, et al) than any other book or show I've ever seen. If you've never seen "The Princess Bride" - it's not required.If you're the type of person who likes to watch A&E Biographies or VHI1's "Behind the Music" or even "Inside The Actor's Studio" with James Lipton - BUY THIS BOOK.If you're looking for a gritty, largely negative tell-all, you'll be disappointed.______________________________________My longer review (largely spoiler free):The first thing that struck me about the telling was the light tone of the book. The first several times I read "as you wish" (the phrase in the book - which shows up a few times in the first five or so pages), I did cringe a little bit. I also very quickly picked up that Mr. Elwes gives what I could only think of as a "rose colored glasses look back" at how the movie came to be.But you know what? It works wonderfully. A lovingly crafted movie about a fairy tale deserves a fairy tale look back at how it all came to be. One also begins to realize that Cary landed the role and played the part like his real life had taken on fairy tale proportions as well.The book is not perfect. There are a few times where Mr. Elwes is a bit repetitive, and perhaps a few times where some segments go on longer than they need to. However, I still give it five stars because overall, the book is extremely engaging - a page burner, if you will. More importantly, we get to see a veritible diary's honesty as if written in between takes of the movie.The author is quite self-deprecating and one can't express enough how refreshing it is. Once again, I find myself wishing, like I did back in 1987, that I could see Cary Elwes up on screen a whole lot more.Once I started getting deeper into the "story", as it were, Cary really finds his voice. I had no idea going in that this wasn't just a bunch of cutesy stories about how Andre got drunk or other tidbits you might hear about on set. No way. Again, in a very conversational tone by someone who obviously loved the experience, Cary regales us with inifinite details that frankly, I'm astounded he remembers. Right down to snacks being served on silver platters in one of the hotels.I loved his chapter on sword-fighting. Granted, I'm a fantasy/sci-fi geek from way back who thought the swordfight in the movie was absolutely fantastic, but hearing how much he had to train and work for that scene only gave me greater appreciation for the effort. (Probably not the least of one of his reasons for devoting a bit of time for that in his book! Mr. Elwes had to work his butt off!)One other note about the tone of the book: I can nearly hear Cary's "English Accent" as he narrates the book. (I put that in quotes, because I can't think of Cary Elwes without thinking of his line from "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" where he says, "Unlike some Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English Accent!") ;) I almost started to feel like a new actor on a set, he relays the feelings that well. Cary, if I may call him that, lets you get inside his head, revealing his own insecurities and feelings.There were many points while reading that I found myself smiling. I had to come back to this review to point that out. It's quite simply, that enjoyable of a read.The book is also surprisingly hefty. I figured.. "How many anecdotes can this guy tell? I mean, I love the movie and I've been a fan of Cary Elwes since he made it, but .. haven't we heard them all?"Not by a long shot. And the (numerous!) quotes from Rob Reiner and other cast members were a complete joy to read and something of a surprise, since I didn't know they were included as well.One thing about some actors that has made me cringe is when beloved movies become an embarrassment for them. The fear of type casting is taken to new heights (or whatever their motivation). Sure, I can appreciate an actor begrudging that a movie you make when you're 25 is the greatest thing you've ever done - and you always want to think that your best is yet to come.Thankfully, Mr. Elwes has never been "that guy" and it shows in the book he's written. One can tell from reading that he understood how lucky he was at the time and has appreciated it ever since. It warms the heart finding out that he's as much a fan of the story (and eventually, of the movie) as any other fan was.You know how some DVD bonuses involve actors or directors running around with behind the scenes cameras? Getting to see the creation of the movie? "The Lord of the Rings" comes to mind and on the "Dread Pirate Roberts" version of the DVD, this film has a fair amount. But, no amount of behind the scenes started when Cary Elwes was still on the set of another movie...it's that comprehensive.Besides there never seems to be enough footage - a fan of the movie or a movie buff can't get enough of this stuff. I know in my case, I couldn't put the book down!Just like there's a shortage of perfect... tell-alls, in this world (Sorry, had to go there! What fan wouldn't include his/her favorite quote? :) ) It would be a pity if you missed this one.

One of the best parts about this book is how Lightner goes into such detailed explanation about techniques for using every bit of produce, how to really make your groceries stretch and last, and how expiration dates actually work. Plus, the recipes are DELICIOUS. You have to make the shakshuka immediately.Before I read this book, I felt defeated by how much food my family wasted; we always had good intentions but so many times we just couldn't get it together. Lightner has helped me change the way I look at our groceries and meal-planning, plus how good waste impacts the world. I'm actually excited by the challenge of using every bit of what we buy. It's a small miracle.Buy this book for anyone in your life who values the environment, saving money, or even just cooking a delicious meal. They will LOVE this entire book.

This book has some great information on how to reduce food waste, if your goal is just reducing your waste output. I was hoping for more ways to use some of the scraps that are normally thrown away -- there are some, but I was looking for things I could use for our local food bank, not things that upper middle class families would use. This is not a "how to save money by using food scraps" book. And I don't really have a food waste problem, since I have dogs and chickens. So while this book would be great for some people, it wasn't a good match for me.

I just bought a second copy of this for a friend because I am so impressed with this book. Very well organized and comprehensive, this book is loaded with helpful hints from how to make apple juice without a juicer to tricks for freezing egg whites. There's a sensible discussion on when you can safely ignore pull-dates. Numerous delicious recipes including one of the most delicious shakshuka renditions I've ever tasted. Besides all of this, you can learn how to plant a garden from vegetable scraps. Highly recommended.

I'm guilty of overbuying food for my family all the time. I end up composting a lot, but would so much rather use some of the scraps/food waste towards making ... other food! Brilliant! The book is easy to understand, and the recipes are simple enough that I make some of them in a pinch, usually with other ingredients I already have. Love the quick tips too!

Rich Cohen was one of the millions of Chicago Cubs fans who finally got to see the team win a World Series in 2016. In this volume, Cohen recalls his history as a Cubs fan and the mindset that rooting for the team bred in fans. The author hits the highlights of the franchise since it won its last Series in 1908, profiling the key players and other personnel that never hoisted the Commissioner's Trophy during their tenures with the club and recalling the disappointments of 1969, 1984, and 2003.Cohen notes the mental component of the curse and the effect it had on Cubs players. The author describes how the franchise inculcated a new mindset in its farm system during the Ricketts-Epstein era and how the Cubs were essentially rebuilt in recent years. Wrigley Field played a real role in the team's misfortune during the drought years, and the book explains why the only way to build a World Series winner in a park that provides essentially no home-field advantage was to build a team as good as the 2016 Cubs were.The author takes the reader through the six tough games against the Dodgers in the NLCS and the seven epic games against the Indians in the World Series, culminating in the unforgettable seventh game. There is a great picture section in the book of key figures in Cubs history since 1908. Cubs fans are thrilled that they got to see their team win it all once in their lives, and this book is a good chronicle of a generations-long era of ineptitude that is now thankfully over.

Author Rich Cohen has provided us with a rather interesting history of some of the elite performers of the Cubs in addition to some stories of lesser players as well. I can see a present-day Cubs' fan rating this five stars because it goes into depth on how Theo Epstein went about building a winner along with a lengthy coverage of the 2016 playoffs and World Series in which the Cubs were victorious. My favorite part of the book were the stories of Grover Cleveland Alexander as a member of the Cubs in addition to the demons he faced on return from World War I. Equally enjoyable were the stories of Mordecai "Three-Finger" Brown, and the 1908 pennant race involving the Cubs and Giants and the infamous game in which Fred Merkle neglected to touch second base in the Polo Grounds.Theo Epstein appears to share my beliefs regarding the drafting of players in emphasizing position players due to pitchers often becoming subject to arm injuries. Fans need to be aware of the need for patience in a rebuilding program while tomorrow's stars are germinating in the minor leagues. I hope my fellow Tigers' fans are listening.The book contains 262 pages of text in addition to sixteen pages of text. Cubs' fan or not this is a worthwhile book for your library.

No one is qualified to write the definitive book about the Cubs if they didn't undergo a lifetime of disappointment and resignation before that single moment of extra-inning triumph. We should be grateful Cohen rejected his dad's wise advice to not become a Cub's fan, because only he could write this book, which ranks up there with Damn Yankees as one of the best baseball books ever written, IMHO.

As a lifelong Red Sox fan who hasn't followed the Cubs much since the days of Dee Fondy and Hank Sauer, I approached this book with some trepidation. To my surprise it became my favorite sports book of 2017. Cohen writes with humor, exuberance, and candor about his own lifelong preoccupation with his favorite team and his love of baseball is obvious. His digressions and insights into such diverse characters as Three Finger Brown, Eddie Waitkus, and Grover Cleveland Alexander set this book apart from the usual fanboy fare. I agree totally with his final bittersweet realization that the ultimate Cub breakage of the 108 year old curse would also mark the end of his own childhood. Anyone with a remote interest in the Chicago Cubs would be fortunate to find this book under his or her Christmas tree.

It's that good.The tempo is perfect, up and down, slowing in the 1950s and speeding in the 1960s, and other lows and highs. He describes 1984 just as I remembered it, living in Detroit. The Cubs and the Tigers in a replay of the 1945 series, only it didn't happen. My father lived 74 years without seeing them win a World Series, but he kept the faith every year.The description of the writer's emotions in each game of the World Series deserves a Pulitzer Prize.It's that good.

In "The Chicago Cubs: Story of a Curse", author Rich Cohen not only talks about the 2016 Cubs, but he also looks back at previous Cubs teams and players.As a life-long Cubs fan, I can relate to the heartbreak that Cohen discusses. The years 1969, 1984, 1989, 2003 (ouch), 2007, and 2008 each bring back unpleasant memories for Cubs fans. I was only 4 years old in 1969, so I don't remember much about that team. I do remember my brother switching his allegiance to the Cardinals after that historic collapse. I remember the others well, especially 2003, when the Cubs were only 5 outs away from going to the World Series.I also enjoyed reading about the select Cubs players Cohen has written about. Hack Wilson, Grover Cleveland "Pete" Alexander, Rogers Hornsby, and Cap Anson each have their own place in Cubs lore. Of course, I especially enjoyed reliving the magical 2016 season again. Different theories of the curse, including Anson's alleged racism and, of course, the billy goat, also are covered in this book.I recommend this book to all Cubs fans. The history contained throughout gives the reader a true picture of what it's like to be a Cubs fan, and the World Series championship is a fitting ending. Highly Recommended.

This was a great book. I was not sure what to expect when I took the class but it was well laid out as is this book with great topics. When I think IT I don't think ethics but when you read about issues that have come up over the years it really makes you think. I never realized that an issue existed over software or code. Was code property? Should a program be treaty as such? It is all here. If you are curious about ethics in IT, this is a great book. I know a new edition is out but if you don't need it for class and you just want to read it for your own knowledge, save the money and grab this edition.

I rented the e-book and it is completely in black and white, no color at all. Some of the pages are really dark too. It is very hard to try and read this book on a computer screen, please preview the 'look inside' feature to see exactly what I'm talking about. Only the cover is in color. More than one star because the entire book is searchable and text is selectable.

This book is a fast read for my Ethics class at school. The book offers relatively small chapters and intriguing context. However, some of the material that I have read does not seem right to me. I feel that this book follows many sections of the ethics world perfectly and offers great insight into the dos and don'ts, but at the same time mentions some material that is flawed. This book is OK, but could use some deeper research into the world of MMOs as well as preventing online crime.

Great men like Lincoln has got a lot to teach us the young generation, I draw a lot of inspiration from the struggles he went through before and after becoming an American leader. He failed a lot more times than any president in pursue of the top seat and even after attaining it, he didn't act like a self-fish politician but one who cared for many lives irrespective of their appearance and believes.

This well-written brief account of Abraham Lincoln's life from early childhood to death reveals insights into the man of which I had not been aware. It tells of his personal life as well of his politics and the reason he was assassinated.

This book from author Michael Crawley basically is a snapshot of Lincoln's biography including his life & work. This was very helpful to my nephew since he had a research work pertaining former presidents of the United States of America and he was assigned to look up on Abraham Lincolns biography. I was glad that this helped him a lot. Nice one!

Part of history I'd either forgotten, or didn't know at all. Such a great story in this book about a great man and president but it tells of warts and all. Of course he was a saint/sinner as all children of God are. Still his memory is to be held in esteem.

For people who want to understand Lincoln without superfluous details, I strongly recommend this book. You will develop a deeper understanding of Lincoln's innermost thoughts yet political considerations. A great read.

I loved Ash Princess so much I was almost afraid to read this sequel in case it was disappointing or, as happens with so many other series, the author ruins the characters and relationships forged in the first book. But this lived up to my hopes in every way! Theodosia becomes a true queen, with all the powers and burdens that brings. Theo's relationships with Blaise, Artemesia, and Heron grows and deepens, as does her relationship with Prince Soren.Theodosia and her companions (three Astrean Guardians with the powers of Air, Water and Earth + Soren the Crown Prince of the Kalovaxians who also happens to be Theo's love interest) join with the pirate Dragonsbane (Theo's aunt). Dragonsbane takes them to Sta'Crivero, rich neighboring kingdom whose corrupt elderly king is only interested in how he can use her situation for profit. A sea of suitors compete for Theo's hand in marriage (and 1/2 her kingdom) while Theo fights against accepting a forced marriage for political reasons. Each of them struggle with the demons of their past and what they must now do now to regain Astrea. As the group navigates a sea of viperous suitors and tries to aid the starving Astrean refugees in Sta'Crivero, brilliant writing conveys their internal fears that they will become what they loathed in their ruthless parents. Does the end ever justify the mean? Or is empathy just a weakness that must be set aside for the greater good? There are twists and turns that had me cheering with excitement one minute and then shocked and despairing the next, but it is a ride worth taking. We see Erik and his mother Hoa again, and new surprising details of their identity is revealed. Crescentia is back and her transformation makes her into an intriguing and frightening enemy. Soren's political and military genius is put to use as tries to makes restitution for his past and show his love and loyalty to Theo. I loved watching their relationship blossom in this book. Theo finds new allies and moves closer to retaking Astrea.I can't wait for the conclusion to this series!

Good read, forward-thinking without it being overwhelming, but falls short of the 5 star potential that I think it has. I'm writing this review before book 3 is released, so I've only read books 1 and 2. This one is slower than the first but I think that's due to world-building and answering questions from the first book. Left off right where book one ended. I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars because it didn't grab me quite as well as the first and the plot was slow to start but it was still a good read. The writing is beautiful and the characters seemed to evolve more for the most part but maybe not quite to their full potential or were a bit contradictory, but who am I? Certainly not a literary author. Overall I enjoyed the series but it's not quite a 5 star in my opinion. Would recommend for girls and young women ages 16+ due to amount of violenc and some mild references to rape/sexual abuse. Contains mild swearing but it was pretty scarce (in case anyone is triggered or doesn't like the occasional, but rare, cursing). The 2 books are very forward thinking and feminist without it being overwhelming, aside from what is discussed below in the spoilers, which is refreshing.*******SPOILERS BELOW******You've been warned!I found that both books were written beautifully but were quite repetitive when it came to past events in the series.Yes, we know the Kaiser overthrew her land.Yes, we know the Theyn killed her mother the queen, by the Kaiser's order of course.Yes, we know she witnessed it.Yes, we know she was forced to kill Ampelio (possibly her father), by the Kaiser's order again.Yes, we know Dragonsbane and Art have a strained relationship.Yes, we know she betrayed Cress and will never be forgiven.Yes, Cress now has a freakish gift that haunts nightmaresYes, queens don't marryYes, we know Theo doesn't want to forgive Prinz Soren for captaining the raid on Vecturia, though again by the Kaiser's ordersetc.I felt like I was watching episode recaps not reading books, and that bothered me. Maybe more than it should but it did. Also there is the stereotypical love triangle and she can't seem to make up her mind on which boy she wants to pursue but doesn't really seem to see it as a triangle, more like she is going to get both and kisses/proclaims her love to each, back and forth, with no real thought to who she actually "loves." This leads me to believe that Blaise will die and she ends up with the Prinz because there doesn't seem to be much of an arguement going on in her head, especially in the second book. With a book so forward thinking and trying to empower women, it doesn't make sense to me why this triangle is the way it is. It doesn't feel like "I'm an independent woman and the choice is mine," more like "emotional teenage girl can't decide."The first book had really good plot other than that and kept me up at night reading until I finished and I believe I overall enjoyed the storyThe second one I trudged through the first few chapters but once they were on their way to meet the king and suitors, things really picked up the pace. I did not guess the suitor murder culprit initially but started to get an idea of who it was right before it was revealed.

Strong, dynamic characters make a wonderful fantasy!Thanks to NetGalley and Random House for the opportunity to read and review Lady Smoke by Laura Sebastian!Theo is on Smoke, Dragonbane’s ship, with her Shadows and Soren. They are all working towards gathering allies to get her palace and reign back. Dynamic, strong characters plus the world building make Lady Smoke interesting to read and the uncertainty of Theo’s future drew me into the story even more. The characters’ backgrounds are intense and built fascinating characters that keep growing and stay steadfast by Theo’s side. Amazing strength and loyalty create unparalleled love for the kingdom they are all trying to get back. As the story carries on, more atrocities are brought to light and make the group even more determined! I don’t want to spoil anything but I’m thoroughly enjoying this series and anxiously awaiting the third book! 5 stars for great world building and strong, dynamic characters!

I was worried thia one wouldn't live up to the first book, but I am happy to say that is not the case. I don't want to say too much to give away the excitement or the twists and turns of this amazing story. All I can say is I loved this story almosy as much as the first. Spring 2020 is too far away to see the epic conclusion of this story. I will say I am Team Soren (sorry Blaise)!

This was a very intriguing-- and at times heartbreaking-- book that left me unable to put the book down. Lots of character development and I love how the author builds on the characters and makes them more 3D, especially with their flaws. It makes them more realistic in an unrealistic setting. I can't wait for the next book!
