I love Achebe. So I love this collection of three of his essays. His prose is clean and concrete, he is clear and intelligent. Since these are from public lectures he gave at various points, it's easy to read them as they were meant to be engaging. A great little book for anyone interested in learning more about Achebe and postcolonial studies.

This little book from Achebe is great for its exploration of intellectual colonization and its consequences in Africa. The presentation is fluid and elegant.....a piece of art from the master story teller and humanist. I recommend this book to all those who believe that every culture should have a place in the global table and that diversity makes the world a better place. I am a great fan of Achebe and this book has lived up to the high billing I have of him. Kudos to a great man of letters.

Interesting views from someone who lived in the villages when the missionaries came . Not a very positive view of the missions.

We need more book on Africa written by African's available to American readers. Mr. Achebe will be surely missed but he leaves us a treasure in his books

Long live the proud son of Africa and our respected statesman.Achebe the honest and truthful dispenser of both sides of the story. Colonial griots (to borrow Achebe's words) such as Elspeth Huxley and other apologists have for too long been left alone to justify the dispossession of precious lands and cultures. Until the proud son of Africa made them eat their own words and exposed them for what they are. Dishonest griots deftly laying the groundwork for self-enrichment at the expense of peace loving and decent Human Beings.Chinua Achebe as exemplified by his few but precious books writes not to make money but only when he must say something useful. Unlike modern day "authors" who are more about money than substance. I have no doubt Achebe can write profound and moving accounts of African and world issues at the rate of one book a day but he chose only to spend his time teaching.It is obvious why the Nobel Prize went to Wole Soyinka instead of Chinua Achebe. Achebe refuses to write for a "foreign" audience and does not take his marching orders from anybody. He is his own man. Africans and honest people all over the world have in their own ways given Achebe the best prize in the world.Continuous interest in his worthwhile classics such as Things Fall Apart,The Man of the People,No longer at Ease,Anthills of the Savannah, Morning Yet on Creation Day,Hopes and Impediments and many others.Home and Exile may be a small book but has enough three pence (from Achebes "somebody knock me down and have three pence!") to liberate nations and individuals from the grip and stench of colonial and racist apologia masquerading as literature.Long live Achebe, proud son of Africa and citizen of the world.To know Achebe (by reading his books) is to know how to be an unassuming and proud Human Being who quitely and calmly states his truth for the benefit of us all.

Since the book is already well-summarized above, I'll just give my own reaction.I've read a number of Achebe's novels and one essay (the excellent critique of Heart of Darkness) and really enjoyed the "backstage" feeling of hearing the author's first person voice - an insightful and kindly voice. For me, the effect of Achebe's strong positions is heightened by the dignified presentation, and of course by the poignant and funny stories from his own life that he uses to illustrate those positions. As compared to one of my other favorite authors, James Baldwin, Achebe's writing includes less calls to action, and more explanation. For instance, even in his sharp critique of Vidiadhar Naipaul's novels, Achebe's first priority is to shine light on the processes that led to Naipul's failures of vision. I think people who have read Achebe's fiction or essays and liked it, or generally care about literature from an indigenous or "Third World" perspective will really enjoy this short text. Definitely worth the cost, and may be available from the library.

I am a huge fan of Christopher West. I am very familiar with his work so I bought this book as a sort of reference material. Mr. West is very consistant with his explanation of John Paul II's Theology of the Body, so navigating through this book is very easy. You might want to buy a pack of highlighters with this book because you will be highlighting things that appeal to you and apply to your life or something that you might want to share with someone else. West writes in a plain and easy style to understand and he does a great job of breaking elements down at a level anyone can understand. I highly recommend this book to everyone whether you're Catholic, Non-denominational, or non Christian, it will give you a new or fresh perspective on God, yourself, and your relationships with others.

It was nice to read this and see what I may have missed trying to read the original.

Recommended reading by protestant clergyman.Integrates spirituality, physicality, theology and behavior well. West provides adequate context for John Paul's message to be understood by the western layman as well as the theologically trained and biblically literate.

This is the best book on marriage ever written, in my opinion. It explains how God veiws marraige and the beauty of the sexual union that was designed by God.

Christopher West is a well-established name as a popularizer of John Paul II's Theology of the Body. This book differs from West's other works in being a systematic commentary on the pope's 129 noontime talks on the meaning of the human body according to Catholic Christianity, which we given over five years early in his pontificate (1979-1984).The organization of the book is impeccable. The book is divided into six "cycles", which are formed according to the main themes of John Paul's talks, which I list below:1. "Original Man": Adam and Eve before the Fall, and how their integrity as individuals and in their relations with each other and God contrast with our imbalanced, Fallen condition.2. "Historical Man": our current, fallen state. West explains the Pope's penetrating analysis of how exactly sin touches our lives.3. "Eschatological Man": a stirring vision of how our form is divinized (which reminds me of Eastern theology's emphasis on the Transfiguration) and how marriage is consummated with our perfect communion with God in heavean.4. "Love and Fruitfulness": West looks into John Paul's closing reflections on Humanae Vitae, the encyclical of Paul VI that raised a fury among Catholics who were disappointed by the papacy's continued stance against artificial contraception.The cycles are in turn broken down into sections, each of which generally comments on one or two of John Paul's noontime audiences. Everything is scrupulously referenced not only to the Theology of the Body talks (which Pauline Press also publishes) by also to the Catechism and pertinent encyclical letters on sexuality and the human person. At the end of each cycle, West also has a review section, summing up the key points of that particular cycle.In this book, West recounts how the Theology of the Body had helped him heal from a long period of being a lapsed, worldly Catholic, and this sense of wonder and freedom permeates the book. There is food for the mind and the heart, as I have grown to appreciate the dignity of marriage, celibacy, and the human person in a way I would never have expected just a few years ago. The very methodical organization and annotation of this volume might lead one to suspect that this book is dry, but it in fact reads wonderfully. In the space of a few weeks I read the entire book, in spite of a busy schedule as a medical student.While it is best to read this book along with the original talks of the pope themselves, this commentary could be read on its own with great profit, as I have done. I am working on the original talks, but I read way ahead with West's book, loving every minute of it, and shall return to John Paul's masterpiece with that much more understanding and appreciation.Professor West has done the world a great service in promoting John Paul II's magnificent celebration and defense of the human person.

Peter Egan's column was the first thing I always read in Road & Track magazine for 30 years. His writing is entertaining, informative yet clear and often produces vivid imagery for me. Often he writes something so true, profound and funny that I actually Laugh Out Loud and read it aloud to my long suffering spouse.Like many, I share Peter's love of old British sports cars, Motorcycles, airplanes, guitars, and much more. Although many of us have wished to, Peter has apparently spent most of his life tinkering and restoring these. Fortunately for us, he found time to write about all of this. It was a treat to re-read these columns after all the years.

Peter Egan is great at relating his personal views as it pertains to cars (or anything that burns fuel), life, and society. His articles were always my first stop when I opened a R&T as a kid. His anecdotes of family, coworkers, and friends revolving around internal combustion and Murphey's law are littered with the same triumphs (no pun intended) and tragedies that many of us garage hobbyists can relate to on a personal level. I look forward to buying the other Side Glances volumes once I've finished this one. Thanks for all the great stories over the years Mr. Egan!

I have read Peter Egan articles for years in Road and Track and Cycle World. He is so good at making our everyday experiences come back at us in a very funny presentation in regards to sports cars, motorcycles and just the daily frustrations of life.

Fascinating collection of the early writings of Peter Egan for a MC magazine. He writes in a style similar to Mark Twain, with off beat humor and of experiences we've had, but may have forgotten the humor behind such. Each article is about two pages long, and thoroughly enjoyable. Many had me "rolling in the aisles".

If you are a car nut, you should be familiar with Peter Egan's writing. And you should already have this book. If you don't, I ask why?

Egan is a genius! His aw-shucks attitude hides a keen observer's mind.

I found Mr. Egan to be in top form (as usual). This is not the first of his books that I own and there will be more--probably everyone he creates--all the best you can read.

Even though the book had few writings and markings, overall it is in good condition and the price was matchless- only about one third the price of a brand new book. The only thing I did not like was the service of the seller- a third party called Bookbyte123. They never contacted me when the book was shipped out and so finally I HAD to contact them to find out the status of my order. The book did get to me on-time but a little more communication would have been nice.Prakriti

I had to purchase this book for a class and, while I can't say the subject matter is scintillating, Jacobs & Chase do a good job of explaining the concepts and making them applicable in today's business environment. The step-by-step video examples have proven most helpful from an instructional perspective.

This is for a class...obviously the instructor picked the book. The instructor did not register the course with McGraw Hill for quizzes and testing though...however, McGraw Hill online references are still available for use, review, etc. I am pleased with the free online resources as they add value to the book and enhance your learning. The class videos are not available though as Hurricane Sandy took out the website and you now need to register and find the videos displayed in class. Delivery from Amazon was amazing and on-time as promised.

New product was missing access code. Whole point of buying a brand new text book is for the access code.

I absolutely love this book and totally recommend it to anyone looking for a wonderful children's book. The plot is simple and straightforward - the artwork around the edges of the pages give away the subplot, as it were - and there is an unexpected (if you ignore the edges artwork) but perfect ending. Jan Brett's artwork is wonderful. We got many hours of enjoyment reading this book to and with our three sons and this is the first book I order to give to friends with newborns (we like to be major contributors to their libraries!). I would recommend any of the early Jan Brett books - from Fritz and Tika to the hedgehogs and Sleeping Beauty - all thoughtfully done. But invest in a roll of packing tape. The spines will need some reinforcing after a hew hundred reads!

This is such a wonderful book that my 2 year old son asked me to read him over and over. I love Jan Brett books in general but this one is one of my favorites.

Annie and the Wild Animals is a great resource for my granddaughter who distances herself from animals. She discovers animals have needs too and need humans.

I love Jan Brett's work

I grew up in the West and around wild animals (as well as domesticated ones). I hesitated to purchase this book because I was concerned that it would present wild animals as "cute" and safe, which is not a lesson that I want my children to learn. I want my children to respect and love nature and animals, but certainly don't want them to assume that any animal is going to be safe to be around, especially a wild animal. Add in the fact that feeding wild animals (other than birds) is not encouraged, and I was nervous. I don't want my children to have unrealistic and potentially dangerous ideas about how safe they are in nature/around wild animals.However, the book shows that the wild animals are just that - wild. And Annie recognizes that and doesn't try to tame them. In the end, Annie's cat returns with kittens, something I remember our cats doing while we were growing up - a wonderful surprise.This book is obviously a wonderful flight of fancy and I know my daughter really enjoys it. And I also know that if she sees an elk while we're camping, she's not going to try to pet it! Let alone, a mountain lion or bear or cow moose.

Jan Brett is always an excellent choice. I always include a Jan Brett in my gift of baby books. (Milne, Brett and another depending upon the parents).

Good read. Short book, giving quality insight on Brexit. Most informative was the complex relationship between the UK and Europe for decades leading up the referendum.

I am glad to have had the opportunity to read this book.I lived in the UK for about years spanning the 1980s. I arrived just as Thatcher was taking power, and—like so many others in Britain—looked back across the pond in disbelief as Reagan was elected. I watched Britain’s higher education be gutted, saw the early consequences of privatization, and—quite generally—saw Britain fall into the consequent traps and morasses that helped lead to Brexit.I was in England and then Scotland the month before the Brexit vote; in fact I left the UK the day before the vote. No one I knew personally or professionally supported Brexit, and, though people were certainly worried, no one I interacted with thought that it would pass. It still is a shock, and, though I know how people explain the vote and the likely consequences of enacting Brexit, I can’t claim to understand it. And I worry constantly about what it will mean for England, whether it will exacerbate the tensions between Northern Ireland and Ireland, and whether it will destabilize Europe and the West, more broadly. Trump’s election and the tensions between England and his ‘Great America’ are another wildcard.I mention my background not because I think it is likely to be typical of other readers’ perspective, but rather because I suspect that it isn’t. And it certainly affected my angle of vision. I appreciate the background that the authors’ supply. But—perhaps because my questions and concerns are so different from those of the book’s anticipated audience—I did not feel, in the end, that I understood Brexit better, or could address my worries about it. For me, it remains the mystery it was when it passed.

They relate the relationship between Britain and Europe during the life of the European Community and the leaders on both sides from Charles de Gaulle through Margaret Thatcher, John Major, Tony Blair, David Cameron and Jacques Chirac.What is so fascinating about this relatively short book about recent and contemporary British politics? I admit, I am an American and a political junkie. The interplay between the Conservatives and Labour and UKIP (United Kingdom Independence Party, I had wondered what that was before this reading) brings my superficial understanding of British politics up to date. What is seized my interest is the similarities between trends as depicted in this book and what I have seen in American politics. The realignment of parties is like watching America in a mirror. Conservatives rebrand from being the representatives of the upper classes and business to being the party of the middle class while Labour morphs from it working class roots to appeal to the middle class. Ideological wedges are dulled as politicians appeal to competency more than issues. In the wake of Brexit Labour moves back to the left and ideological/class struggle seems to be making a return. These moves provide a background against which to measure our own political odysseyI recommend “Brexit and British Politics” to anyone to anyone with an interest in the unfolding saga of Britain and Europe, recent British history and for Americans seeking a parallel political universe against which to measure our own.

Brexit has changed the face of Britain's politics, economy, trading relationships and their current culture. In this book the authors tale a neutral view point--not taking sides. Just like our current American election has people fiercely divided so does Brexit divide the UK. The authors discuss both sides of the issue with facts and a detachment in terms of not taking sides. They discuss what happened before, during and after the passage of the referendum.I think this is well constructed analysis of a very divisive issue in the UK. The book is short (120 pages of dialogue) with a comprehensive 15 pages of notes as well as a good index.If you are interested in Brexit and how it happened, what happened and what is probably going to happen then this is a very nice summary with the authors not taking sides, not judging and not haranguing.

"Brexit and British Politics" by Geoffrey Evans and Anand Menon is a balanced explainer for someone interested in what happened with the Brexit vote. I'm not familiar with Brexit except what was on the news so I found this book to be a good guide to understanding the different sides plus a brief history on modern British politics that lead to the vote. That part of the book may have been the most fascinating. It is a lean narrative told in accessible terms so that even a novice like me can follow the text. I also appreciate that the authors seem clear that this story of this vote and its effects is an open-ended one because the dust hasn't settled yet.All in all, a very good read on a very timely subject.

I'm a huge fan of Polity books and to date, have probably read at least a half dozen - perhaps more. Without exception, they are always brief yet informative so as to not waste the time of the reader. Likewise, this addition gets to the point, presents a brief but relevant background for those who may not be as familiar with the events leading up to the historic vote and then delves into clear yet concise overview of the current issues. Admittedly with the current happenings here in the states it's hard to keep up with what is going on at a global level (it's hard to keep up with what's going on domestically but that is another thing entirely) so this fills a void in my current understanding of events.

This book is one of those examples of "all good things come in small packages". It is a very pleasant read and excellent for reference. Besides the free format syntax, the book also explains other things such as the use and syntax of Built In Functions and some aspects of ILE. Highly recommend this book to anybody thinking of using RPG Free.

This is a very easy book to learn RPG from. It is explained in easy to understand terms and language. If you know RPG IV and are trying to learn free format this is the book to buy. I have met the author and sit in two of the classes he thought and he is easy to learn from and makes learning fun.

The book is well organized. Covers the basic topics in RPG free format.Served me as a good starting point for RPG Free Format.Doesn't cover advanced topics such as DDS (Display Files, Printer Files, Phisycal Files or Logical Files) and SQL as well.

This book is good for the developer that just needs to know the new syntax for the opcodes and new %BIF's. The examples are clear, but not every situation. I think overall it was good. It took me from standard RPG IV to free format and it was pretty painless.
