I love the Time Out series. I think it is definitely the best of the bigger name travel guides, particularly with respect to things like restaurants, bars, and cafes. They don't covers as many cities, but when they do, like here, I try to get them. Unfortunately this one proved disappointing. The descriptions of sights were as expected, but the problem was with the descriptions of the restaurants, bars, and cafes. Several places that the book talked up as amazing ended up being surprisingly below average. For other places the hours weren't even close to correct, despite the fact that this book was used in October 2013 and was only published in July 2013, 3 months earlier.Ultimately my traveling companion and I decided to rely on another guide's recommendations that we were able to get through an app. We figured they'd be super touristy, but they ended up being stronger recommendations.I've been fortunate to travel a lot, and I keep my travel guides, so there are nearly two dozen travel guides sitting on my bookshelf right now. I got rid of this one, the first time I've done that.

I am a second-generation native of the Southwestern desert and have been around coyotes all my life. My family ranched in Southern Arizona for many years and we maintained a more-or-less non-aggression pact with “our” coyotes (the dismal economics of desert open-range cattle agriculture being by far the larger bar to success). I have served on the board of the University of Arizona Press which gave me access to very large natural history resources. Also exposed to the Tohono O'odham folklore surrounding the coyote (just for the record, I pronounce it Ki-yot sometimes and Ki-yo-tee sometimes), as an adult I have read Ryden, Leydet, Dobie, Zepeda, Nabhan and Bekoff; Flores's predecessors in describing what the Tohono O'odham call “the cousin.” He is the smartest, most flexible and genetically-adapted of North American wildlife. This book is, by far, the most readable and, to my knowledge, complete discussion of our animal companion. That we have spent millions of dollars and a century trying to eradicate an animal who not only mostly can and will live among us without difficulty is truly sad (if for no other reason than the money might have been spent on something more useful). And, amazingly with so little result (proof of his adaptability). A superbly well written book, the one I will recommend to any and all who show an interest in the Coyote.

As an ecologist, I found this myself wanting better scientific backup for the conclusions Flores makes--but that's my hang up. Flores is a respected researcher who has contributed significantly to our scientific and more general understanding of the nature of Coyote. "Coyote America" wasn't written for a science audience primarily, but to enlighten and educate a more general population about this most fascinating species--and it credibly accomplishes this goal. Read and enjoy it--and if you are a scientist, get over needing extensive and peer-reviewed citations.

Author knows the subject matter thoroughly. With that being said, he's all over the place. Jumping from geography to a cultural story to physiology to another cultural story to history, it was difficult keep up with the subject at hand. I had to read this for a class and honestly, if I didn't have to read it, I probably wouldn't have finished it. This book is for people that know almost nothing about the coyote and don't mind the jumping around style of writing.

This is a terrific book. Even better than American Serengeti, which was fabulous in its own right. This book is more coherent, based around a central theme, and less a series of individual essays. It is well written and thoroughly researched. A little on the academic side (no surprise), but still an easy book to read. Coyote America tells an important part of this continent's natural history with reason, science, and folklore.A couple of the negative reviews miss the important points of the book. Coyotes are like us: survivors, opportunists, and problem solvers. Yes, they have been persecuted for over a century and that part is very ugly, but they still not only survived this-they are thriving. We have a lot to learn from them.I spend a lot time outdoors, hunting and fishing. Over the last few years I've seen more and more coyotes, often wondering why. After reading Coyote America, I now understand why this is happening and appreciate how special the song dog really is. I'll never look at them the same way.

This book is fabulous. It reveals, or rather the coyote reveals, how different European and the Great Plains tribes were, how science was used to destroy (big surprise!), how it failed (another big surprise!), and how so many people refused to accept the facts staring them in the face. Culture, environment, science wrapped up in the life of the coyote.

This thought-provoking, engaging reading weaves natural history, pop culture (now and then) and Author Dan Flores's sense of humor into a biography of an overwhelmingly misunderstood species. Coyotes abide even as we humans spend millions of dollars in a wasteful and ineffective campaign to eradicate the species from its home continent. In true trickster fashion, the species has reacted to western eradication programs by expanding its territory across the continent, including into cities, and increased its reproductive rates. Turns out the joke is on us: the most technologically advanced, most myopic and most ignorant species on the planet. Coyote abides. It's time for us to read this book, embrace its lessons and begin a new chapter of adaptation with this wonderful neighbor.

In "Persian Fire", author Tom Holland recounts the conflict between the great empire of Persia and the Greek world that a great many would argue changed world history and could have altered world history in ways we couldn't even imagine had the Persians prevailed.The author "sets the stage" with a history of the Medo-Persians who came down from the mountains and uplands of what is today Iran and Turkey to defeat the Assyrians and conquer the "known world". So, with the defeat of the Egyptians, the Persian empire stretched from India to Africa. Holland recounts revolt of the Ionian cities which brought the Persians into conflict with the Greeks and served as the impetus for the Persian invasion of Europe.This book is very much centered on the Persian perspective, chronicling the ascendancy of first the Medes and then the Persians. He looks at Zoroastrianism and it's influence on the thinking of Persian monarchs. The book essentially follows the Persians and their expansion which inevitable brought them into Europe.In other ways, it's well-plowed ground, recounting the battles between the Persians and the Greeks beginning with the first invasion under Darius which ended at Marathon and expanding with the campaign commanded by Xerxes with highlights at Thermopylae, the sea battles off Artemesium and Salamis as well as the final act at Plataea where the Persian threat ended.It's a good retelling of the History of the conflict - especially if you want more from the Persian perspective and with more of their history. I admit if given a choice, I'd recommend Thermopylae: The Battle For The West by Ernle Bradford who writes more from the Greek point of view as well as being written in a more engaging style even including some wry humor here and there.Once again, a good book from the Persian POV, but well-plowed ground that's been done before and a little better. Four stars.

This is a conversational history of the rise of the Persians and their battles with Athenian Greece. I am a paleontologist with interests in human impacts on the eastern Mediterranean ecosystems. Hence I have a professional interest in the area. This book does a great job of presenting an engaging history of the rise of Persian culture and that of the Greeks. The book has a very readable account of the multiple Persian invasions of Greece, the political development of democracy in Athens and the formation of alliances between Greek city states against (or with) the Persian invaders. There is also a very readable account of the battles of Salamis and Thermopylae as well as the political process of raising the Greek navy. I have read many books on this general topic and find "Persian Fire" is by far the best of the lot.

No one puts together disparate pieces of an academic history into life quite as well as Tom Holland. Like all of his efforts, Persian Fire delivers with a view of the Greco-Persian War that, if not NEVER told, definitely deserves more air. Disdaining the oft bewailed lack of Persian sources, Holland brings together the story of an impossibly vast, impossibly ancient sea of cultures stretching from the Aegean to the Indus. The Achemenids are only the latest in a series of giants that stretch all the way back to and even into prehistory. The Greeks, by contrast, are every bit the squalid backwater the Persians disdained: backbiting, oath breaking, bizarrely nationalist over the small picture and disdainful of the large.Indeed, that's the one ambivalence I felt about the narrative. The stands at Thermopylae and Marathon, the Battle of Salamis are all held up as great events in a cultural division of East and West, monumental in the birth of what a conservative view of history might call "Western Civilization."And yet...is it? Holland is great at leaving the question just short of begged. Clearly the loss of Xerxes did nothing in particular to advance Greek unity or Athenian intellect immediately; as Holland points out the Parthenon was constructed more as a show of one upmanship to Sparta in the run up to the Peloponnesian War, and then Philip/Alexander, and then...what? Holland never lays it right out but leaves a tantalizing view of Greco Roman history as a reconstruction of later people desperate for an ur-validation, much as he described the compilations of the hadith in In the Shadow of the Sword.And if Darius came up with the first proto holy war, if echoes of Zoroastrianism wound down through the millennia to Christianity and Islam, if the "East" delivered the first strong centralized states...was there even an East? Is there?Hints, and nudges and the occasional wink, and in conclusion that is the final delight to this history.

The first thing I want people to know, I very much enjoyed this book, but this book maybe a good book but unfortunately Persian Fire is not a good title, maybe the Greaco-Persian wars would be appropriate, I would say with the exception of the first chapter or so this is completely about the G-P wars. When I purchased this book I had hoped for a more in depth look at the Persian Empire, but I read about the wars, or as the book calls it the battle for the West. While true you can't talk about Persia without the G-P Wars it was 3/4 of the book. If you want a book that tells you about bits and pieces of the early Persian Empire and Marathon, Thermopylae & Salamis, and Plataea, this is a good book, and I did enjoy it, but I expected to read more about Persia, like politics, and what else was going on in the Persian Empire at that time, and more about the Persian empire in general. Also If you are considering this for info about Alexander the Great, that was reduced to 1 page at the very end.

Like all of Holland's books, this is a great read and stuffed with fascinating facts, but the focus on Persia gets lost when Darius and then Xerxes turn to Greece and from then on it's all about Greece.

For those interested in such things: this book contains a floor plan for every house considered. Along with the insightful commentary and great pictures this book is a wonderful example of what a book on domestic architecture should be but often isn't. A must for anyone interested in architectural history.

Husband is a fan of Larry Millett. He usually picks up his books as soon as they come out. When he opened this gift he said he didn't know that Larry had a new book out. He is almost done reading it. I will be picking it up next. A great book....a great read.

My wife is into mansions and their history. She loved it.

A beautiful book, both text and pictures. Each chapter stands on its own so you skip around. The chapters have side stories that are just as interesting as the main text. I highly recommend this book.

I can’t get enough of the people from Beartown. Although I don’t think I could live in a place where winter was three-quarters of the year…brrr.Us Against You is bestselling author Fredrick Backman’s sequel to his novel Beartown. Both are MUST reads. That is all my review really needs to say: just listen to me, they do not disappoint.For those who need more convincing, well here goes:Us Against You brings back all the characters we love, or love to hate: Benji (my fav!), Amat, Bobo, the Andersson’s, Ana, Sune, the Lyft’s, Ramona…I can keep going but will stop it there. We are also introduced to politician Richard Theo who is reminiscent of Tommy Carcetti from HBO’s The Wire, the Rinnius’ Brothers Teemu & Vidar, and new head coach Zackell.This novel is about so much more than hockey, in fact there isn’t that much of it actually played. It focuses on the community’s handling of “the scandal” aftermath from Beartown: with politics muddling in and creating even more conflict between Beartown and Hed residents. You are either a Bear or a Bull and you hate the other for even existing. Families, friendships, secrets, the club…will never be the same. Trigger warning: there is a fair amount of fighting.Backman’s writing consists of simple sentences packed with punch: so much meaning with the right amount of build up: his writing style is brilliant!

I can't write a review that will do this book justice. There's so much to it. So many things to think about, so many characters to think about. I'm still in awe. Days later I'm still in Beartown, and I've figured out what's bothering me and has been ever since I finished the book: I don't want to leave. I want to stay and talk about it, I want so much to talk about it. And I'm frustrated and sad, because the only people I want to talk to about it, the people with whom I want soooo much to talk to about it, are all in the book. Over a coffee or a beer or one kind of whiskey. In the forest, in the rink, at the kennels, in the pub. They're part of my heart now. Frederik Backman, you amaze.

Each and every time I read a Backman book, I am amazed by his grasp of humanity and his ability to express what makes us wonderful and what makes us horrible. His characters are deep and broad, his settings are just enough to make us feel at home, and his stories are intricately woven tapestries. I don’t often think that I’d like to sit and share a beer with an author, but this guy makes me want to fly half way across the world and buy him one. If you haven’t read Beartown, you don’t have to do so in order to enjoy this book, but do yourself a favor and do it. You’ll never regret the time you spend on a Backman novel.

It was so sad to be at the end of this story. I lived with the various characters for days and now miss checking in with them each time I picked up the book. And it was really hard not to read the book all at once .Backman has such a grasp of the complexities and nuances of personalities and communities and the impulses that drive or pull us. The story is riveting, sometimes heartbreaking, a gem of a tale. Much to reflect on as we wonder about our own lives: what we do, why, how we see others, the choices we make..I first discovered Backman when a little bookstore had one of his books on display: My Grandmother Told Me to Tell You She Was Sorry. The title intrigued me. The writing style was unique and the story fetching. I then read all Backman's titles that were available. Us Against You was the last and the one I think touched me to the core. Very special.

This sequel to Beartown is every bit as insightful as the original. The author's ability to weave so many difficult and complex social issues into his stories is an artform unto itself. At a time when the world so desperately needs this kind of insight and wisdom, you could not better spend your time reading and thinking about what Backman brings to the table. I love the work of this author and hope it gathers a very wide audience. To do justice to this book, read Beartown first, this second.

I enjoyed Beartown so much that I bought 10 copies and game them to my child’s teachers and close friends. Therefore, I was nervous about the sequel. Would it let me down, after I raved about the first installment? NO IT DID NOT, in fact it was as good or even better than Beartown. Not sure why it’s not in the top 10 books (in terms of New York Times). I am not going to list all the characters and plots, as many of the other reviews did that. I will simply say Mr. Backman has a way with his words, which bring on strong emotion to one’s psyche. I could have read the entire novel in one sitting but made myself space it out over a week. By far the best book of 2018, just like Beartown was the best book of 2017. I pray there is a 3rd installment! I rarely (if ever) give 5 star reviews, but this author is in his OWN class.

Five star novel. I had previously read Beartown and thought it was outstanding. Us Against You is as good or better. Backman tells a compelling story featuring fully developed cast of characters. Novel simulates a sporting event in that the reader experiences the highs and lows of winning and losing. Book is full of surprises as the author brings the reader to the edge of a cliff, retrieves us and surprises us. Witty dialogue. Many unforeseen twists and turns. Strongly recommend both Beartown and Us Against You.I selected "Us Against You" as my book club selection for 7/19/18. Book was enjoyed by all participants of book club. Approximately half of the folks in the book club also read Beartown in preparation for the meeting.Definitely need a sequel. I eagerly await the follow-on novel featuring Alicia.

This sequel to Beartown was great. I found the political story line very intriguing and very true. The idea that conflicts create power and how to make that work for one's personal goals was well developed. His stories always show the best of people and the worst of people all in the same persons. Again, this story was not as light as his other books, but it was just as awesome in other ways.
