Tracking Overdraft Protection and Home Equity Loans If you have overdraft protection for your checking account or you want to track a home equity line of credit (HELOC), Quicken's credit card account type fits the bill. Both of these financial features act like credit card accounts, with credit limits, minimum payments, and interest charged on credit balances. When you set up a credit card account for overdraft protection or a HELOC, fill in the Opening Balance field with zero and the Credit Limit field with the maximum amount of credit you receive from your bank. Then, when you withdraw money, record that transaction in your Quicken credit card account register. (The withdrawal increases the balance you owe.) When you make a deposit, record it as a payment in the credit card register. Recording the interest you pay on your HELOC is similar to recording interest payments on a credit card. The only difference is that you use a tax-deductible category for interest, like Mortgage Interest Exp:Bank. 2. Moving an Investment Account to a New Brokerage If you decide to move one of your investment accounts to a different brokerage, updating your account in Quicken is easy compared to the real-world process. I borrowed several Quicken books from the library, and purchased 2 here. This is the book I value most.When explaining features of the software, she takes into consideration that different users will have different perspectives, as well as different needs. For example, the definition of the word "account", as used in Quicken is different than you may expect.I have been using it with the 2010 version of Quicken, not the 2009 version mentioned in the title of this book. There is very little difference between the 2009 and 2010 software. I hear the 2011 version is also very similar.The sections on importing files, exporting, and conversions, are to me worth the price of the entire book. The Quicken software functionality is very bad in the area of file imports, exports, and data consolidations; the software imposes annoying limitations. The author addresses these problems in an honest manner, and suggests some work-arounds, along with the pros-and-cons of each work-around. It is obvious that she is not beholden to Intuit Corp.Some will like this book more than others. If you are a beginning Quicken user, and do not have a background in accounting and in-depth computer use, and are intimidated by those subjects, you may want to start with one of the simpler books.This book is packed with useful information, lots of text, and lots of example pictures. This is not a book padded with excessive white space.

First, some background on why I purchased this book. I am new to using personal financial management software (Excel has always sufficed in the past) and, after a great deal of poking around on the web, I chose Quicken primarily due to the fact that MS Money no longer supports sub-categories for expenses. I downloaded the trial version of Quicken Deluxe and just started playing around.After a couple of hours of trial and error, I had all of my accounts linked to One Step Update and all of my transactions had been downloaded and categorized. At this point, I was really smitten with Quicken. I decided to take the plunge and purchase it and went out looking for a good reference book on how to use all of Quicken's features. After even more poking around on the web and reading dozens of reviews here on Amazon, it seemed like The Missing Manual was the best reference guide.Unfortunately, I have been less than impressed with this book. I have found that it has taken me longer to read the book than it did to figure the same things by just playing with the program. And there is an almost total lack of advice on troubleshooting. When the same One Step Update I was so smitten with one weekend starting failing the next weekend, the book was completely mute on where to even begin to try and fix it. Ironically, the marketing for this book claims that it exists because Intuit (the makers of Quicken) doesn't have great support, yet I found the solution to my One Step Update issues through Quicken support (though it still took me a while) and the book didn't help at all!!In the end, I gave this three stars because I think it is a good basic introduction to how to use Quicken Deluxe. But that is all it is. I do not see this as a resource I will continue to go back to now that I have learned the basics and I am already in the market for a more advanced book on common errors and troublshooting.

The book covered the Quicken 2009 program effectively - good explanations on how to use pretty much every function available in the program. While most of the information was readily available elsewhere, the book had some very useful info that can't be found anywhere else (at least very easily)-- particulary related to file functions such as the capabilities of the "File Copy" feature. Excellent return for the money.

This is a great book for anyone using Quicken. I currently use Quicken 2011 - Rental Property Manager version. The Missing Manual is a great reference for reviewing all of Quicken's features and then tightening up categories and tags for accurate reports and tax planning.For me, the section on setting up a HELOC as a credit card account was worth the book's price alone. All the other great explanations were a really thick layer of icing on the proverbial cake.My gratitude and appreciation goes out to all the fine people at "The Missing Manual" series and especially to Bonnie Biafore for her time and energy in writing this book. Well done!

I really was lookng for instructions for the Property Rental Software but this does give me some extra hints for working with the Quicken group of applications.

I've been using Quicken and Quickbooks for years. I still pull out the book from time to time when I can't remember a step. It is a needed manual.

I bought this book to determine whether I should upgrade to Quicken 2009 or wait another year. Although the book is very helpful, it also helped me see that the 2009 "upgrades" weren't worth the price of the software. My two main problems are that images are not always backed and the associated files can easily become "detached" from the backup files. Also, I have had some problems with file corruption.Still, the book is very useful, especially since Intuit will never tell you the limitations and shortcomings of their products.

As an experienced user, I skipped a lot of the book. I bought it because I have not read "the manual" in 4 years. About 20% of the book of was useful to me, but that was enough.

The reader is given an unprecedented look inside the seven-year long, most technically demanding and complex investigation in FBI history.Special Agent Decker’s time and experience in the field conducting criminal investigations were essential in the enormous investigative task required by the anthrax attacks. Dr. Decker, a former researcher and infectious disease diagnostic developer, was uniquely positioned to play a role in the development and application of molecular biology and genomic technology as a forensic tool.What struck me, as I read this factual and detailed account of events, was the absolute enormity and scale of the investigation. Multiple local, state, congressional, postal and federal crime agencies were brought to task. Numerous federal agencies (CDC, NCID, DHSS, Secret Service) contributed resources and expertise. State Public Health Labs, research laboratories across the nation (academic, industrial, and contract) performed microbiological and/or molecular tests on thousands of human and crime scene samples. First tier hospitals in several states were tasked with treating infected individuals, monitoring and sampling possibly contamiated individuals. Buildings in four states (NY, Washington DC, FL, and NJ) as well as mail distribution centers in Brentwood and Trenton, NJ were known contaminated investigational sites. The author methodically explains the complexity of the task at hand. As the attacks continued and spread, Decker outlines the expansion of the investigational team, the organization of functional teams, specific team objectives, the key personnel in the investigation and the channels of communication. Scott further explains the basics and emergence of genomic forensic technology. Decker describes how, over the duration of the investigation, advances in molecular biology techniques (e.g., Polymerase Chain Reaction - PCR, DNA sequencing and synthesis technology and others) sped up the data generation, sensitivity (DNA amplification) and accuracy. Data from genomic technology provided the hard, admissable evidence that led the FBI to the guilty party.As a career scientist and non-fiction reader, I most enjoy those authors who not only have the capacity to inform and educate, but who are also able to entertain. Scott Decker’s documentation of the anthrax attacks and subsequent investigation accomplished all three requirements.

Most of the public had no visibility as to how much this attack impacted the United States and the world, public safety agencies were stretched to their limits. The attacks of 9/11 were still raw in every responders mind and then the anthrax attacks hit. Every day 24 hours a day fire, police and EMS responders were being run ragged by people being scared by white powders. This investigation was of utmost importance to restore calm throughout the world. This is a great, well written read on the background and the challenges they faced. This was not a standard investigation and the science was being developed on the fly. If you have any role in emergency services this is a spectacular look inside the scientific capabilities within the FBI. This book is also great for people not involved in emergency services as it gives some great insight as to the lengths the FBI will go to investigate a crime. Most people don't see behind the door and the author opens that door for all of us. I couldn't put it down and couldn't wait for each subsequent chapter - and I knew what the ending was going to be. Although I will say I read this book on a plane and did get some unusual looks as I had a chest cold and was doing quite a bit if coughing.

Unfortunately, with the short attention span of today's news shows, many people have forgotten that America was attacked with a biological agent shortly after the 9-11 attacks. The dedicated agents of the FBI immediately sprang into action. This anthrax attack killed five people and injured several others and could have spelled major disaster for our country. If not for the quick action of the Bureau, as well as a host of other government agencies that assisted in the investigation, the deaths and damage could have been much more widespread. The case was not only contained, but eventually solved. The author, Scott Decker, was on the front line of this investigation and takes you through all the steps of tracking down the killer. This book describes the scientific side of the anthrax mailings in very useful detail. But the author repeatedly fails to consider alternative, more satisfactory explanations of the criminal evidence. Naively trusting FBI's psychological profilers, he casually dismisses the possibility that al Qaeda carried out the attacks, in spite of all the suggestive evidence. He never addresses the scenario in which the Preparer and Mailer were different people. So the author doesn't perceive that Ivins had an excellent reason to cover up. In all likelihood he was the Innocent Preparer (to test vaccines against post-Soviet threats) but could not admit it because he knew that his lurid psychiatric history would ensure that FBI would conclude that he was also the Mailer. The book also does not try to interpret the case in the context of major events of 2001, including the shoebombing of American Airlines Flight #587 on November 12, 2001 by al Qaeda operative Abderraouf Jdey, as reported in the Canadian press based on the account of an al Qaeda detainee. Search "Was Abderraouf Jdey the Anthrax Mailer?" Nor is the author aware of the reasons to think that someone in FBI has destroyed key evidence potentially exculpatory of Bruce Ivins. I first read Cooper's novel in high school and found it exceedingly difficult to get through, but since I was obsessed with the Daniel Day-Lewis movie version that had just come out in theatres, I wanted to give the book a try. Granted, this is by no means a modern novel. As a literary form, the novel was still in its infancy when Cooper wrote his book. Now coming back to it years later, I can better appreciate how much the narrative does achieve. It's a great adventure story at heart, but also a story that looks at the gaps between cultures and how various people manage. For its time, Cooper's book achieved quite a lot and set a higher standard for novels that followed.

Beautiful copy of a gorgeous book. To refute one reviewer, this book was not about pioneer women who moved with their family, most of whom were actually very reluctant to do so. This was about two young women who were daughters of a high-ranking officer in the army. They were sent to find their father. As such, they did not have a home in which they could hide. One of the women, at least, was quite brave. And both women were extremely well respected, just as they should have been. As to the veracity of the Mohicans and the inconsistency of the Colonel's character, this is a fictional story and like all of our lives, it is not perfect. And to those of you who say the reading is too difficult, what's wrong with challenging your brain? It's rewarding to manage reading and understanding a difficult book.

So this is a classic. I really enjoyed it. But be very careful which book you get. I picked up this .99 cent version. It was horrible. It said it was unabridged. Great! 700+ pages. Great. But 1. It was illustrated with random pictures that did not relate to the story, were hard to see, and graphically inappropriate. 2. It had no chapters! Really come on. Someone just copied and pasted the text onto their version and made some bombastic claim that they have the unabridged version. 3. I am not sure that it was ordered all correctly. I could not follow the book. So I ran over to the local library and picked up a paper copy and totally enjoyed it. I could not put it down. It made sense.For parents out there. There is graphic violence. The use of the English language is great. I really enjoyed hearing about the time period and I am interested in learning more about the French and Indian War. Overall, I would give it a four out of five stars and just caution you to be careful what version you get.

The first couple of times I started reading this book I could not get past the first few pages. I did not give up on it. The next time I had nothing else to read, but I approached it differently.I skipped the first 50 or so pages and tried again. The story gripped me and I kept going. When I had decided it was a keeper, I went back to page one and started over to catch what I had missed.When I caught up to what I had already read I just skimmed through to where I had left off, then breezed through to the end, captivated.This was in summer. I read it again the next four summers. When it came up as a Kindle read read, I had to have it. Need I say more?

Always wanted to read something by James Fenimore Cooper. Finally did. I give it 5 stars. Exciting story, keeping you interested and intrigued as to the plot, totally readable prose. Interesting that many "memes" or "tropes" of "Indians" were here in a book written in 1823: from "Happy Hunting Ground" to Cooper commenting that we call going in single file "Indian file" to (no way around it) whole explanations about scalping and the malice, evil of the "red man." All in all, I believe that there is good reason for this specific novel to be "a classic" and to be a worthwhile view of America that was written almost 200 years ago about a time almost 250 years ago.

James Fenimore Cooper’s Leatherstocking Tales is a collection of five full-length books: The Deerslayer, The Last of the Mohicans, The Pathfinder, The Pioneers, and The Prairie. These books tell the chronological story of what could best be called a “man of nature”. Natty Bumppo is a white man who was raised by or at least lived with Delaware Indians but retains his Christian values as espoused by the Moravians. He is first introduced in The Deerslayer in the mid- 1700’s as a young man who lives alone and hunts in the forests around Lake Otsego in what is now New York. Throughout the five books, his adventures involve his association with several Indians of long acquaintance (the last Mohicans) as they rescue young maidens from unfriendly Indian tribes. The second and third books present Natty as a mature young man now known as Hawkeye due to his sharpshooting skills --- here we have a look at skirmishes of the French and Indian War around Lake George (The Last of the Mohicans) and Lake Ontario (The Pathfinder, or The Inland Sea). Cooper provides a great deal of historical insight in these books. As an older man in The Pioneers, an aging Natty deals with the incursions of civilization in the area around what is now Cooperstown on Lake Otsego --- a thinly-disguised account of Cooper’s family’s settlement of that area along with copious observations about the conservation of nature. In The Prairie our hero is an ancient man, now a trapper on the frontier west of the Mississippi, still trying to stay one step ahead of creeping civilization and its ruination of all that is natural (including the homeland of Indians and buffalo) --- and still rescuing young maidens from hostile Indians.Cooper, writing in the first several decades of the 1800s, provides us with rich descriptions of the geographic areas of the stories from the middle to the end of the 1700’s --- especially interesting for those of us who are familiar with what these areas are now like. He describes the differences in Indian and White cultures while at the same time pointing out the humanity of all people regardless of culture. Cooper speaks out about the threats of civilization on nature, environmental conservation, and native tribes even as he benefited from his family’s position and role in the development of frontier settlement.Overall, a very interesting and informative peek into history that was a pleasure to read --- the perfect historical fiction.

I like that this book focuses on specific looks and that each look has an associated photo. However, the step-by-step instructions are done using drawings, and I think it would be easier to follow the directions if there was a picture with each step (like in Bobbi Brown's book). It would also be nice if there were helpful little tips and bullet points along the way, but i suppose that didn't really become a trend until the 2000's. It a great book, and you'll definitely learn some things, but if it were between this book and Bobbi Brown's book, I'd choose Bobbi Brown's because it gives more specific details and is generally more helpful.

This is a beautiful book. Physically, it is large and is filled with gorgeous photographs of different make up looks, tutorials, models, etc. It's a great coffee table book even if you are not into make up technique. That said, I bought this book for the make up tutorials and was so happy to find that it is so much more - Aucoin gives a great introduction and the beginning of the book focuses on tools, face shapes, what looks best, etc. It's loaded with interesting information. Subsequent chapters break down different looks for different occasions. I am a make up and product junkie but really not the type to buy a book about it - which is so funny bc I have referenced this book a million times over the years for different ideas for fun events - New Year's, a masquerade party or just to switch things up a little. Everytime I open the cover, I find myself lingering over the book, engrossed again in old chapters.....definitely check this out if you are interested in make up application, techniques or seeing how one of the (late) great masters did it.

"Making Faces" is a #CultBook. The legacy of Kevyn Aucoin. Ideal to learn about an iconic person in the industry and its work. I do recommend the book for people with a passion for the industry and/or people with intermediate to advanced makeup skills for the next reasons:- It is more textual than a just beginner book.- The how-to is not with pictures but with sketches drawn by the author, so could not be ideal for someone who wants to apply eyeshadow for the first time in life.- As the how-tos are sketches, are great for intermediate to advanced skilled people who want to work on their sketch drawing techniques.I personally love this book also because I am starting to draw my own facecharts and this help me to see how an expert like Kevin represent a makeup look with the pencil.

Great book, definitely a book a beginner can learn from and keep as a coffee table book. The transformation pictures were beautiful, I wish the diagrams had images of real eyes and lips instead of cartoonish like images but the time this book came out it is understandable why they had those type of images. This book shouldn't be your sole source as a beginner in make-up or you can get confused but it should be in your top 5 make-up books you should have. Overall though it is a good book and testament to Kevyn Aucoins work. Worth the money.

My gently used copy was scribbled on by a child using crayon on the first few pages. How do I be mad at a little artist using Kevyn as inspiration. Weeeerk.

Some probably don't even know their source.With that said, people with a grasp of how to do makeup can take a pass. This book covers basics very well. However, if you need inspiration for say, your 1990s costume or a tutorial done by picture you should grab this book. I'm still blown away by his Marilyn Monroe look for Priscilla Presley. He had a guide on how to contour your face a whole generation before it was appreciated.Making Faces is one of those makeup tomes you need to pass on to the next budding makeup enthusiast. I gave my copy to my niece once Kevyn taught me the ways of contouring and perfect smoky eye shadow. Now that the 90s are back, Kevyn's photos for his makeup looks are suddenly trendy again.

The late Kevyn Aucoin is a pioneer in the makeup industry and still has an immense impact on the world of makeup to this day. He is an Icon of his field. Today his work is still just as relevant as it was since the year 2001. He has worked with a plethora of supermodels and celebrities of all ethnicities and he brings his tips and tricks alive in this book. There are many different makeup looks to choose from to create a flawless look. There are some pretty iconic photos in this book along with his instructions on how to recreate the look. I found the instructions for the different looks easy to follow although I have yet to really try out some of the intense looks. The pages in this book are beautiful and if you love makeup as much as I do this is definitely the book for you. I do not regret buying this book one bit. I honestly wish that I had a big table or shelf to display it on. If you are a beginner to novice and on the fence about this book I would suggest you buy it, if you are a pro I would suggest you buy it as well there are so many glamorous images it has something for everyone.

This book has information and pictures on how to do basic make up, as well as more elaborate looks. what I like most about it is that the author doesn't claim to have a specific technique or that his method is better than others, but encourages the reader to play with color. It covers the basic of skincare and make up and provides photos so that you can see how to apply the make up and recreate the looks. This book will not give you a lot of advanced techniques into make up artistry (such as special effects) but is a must have in your beauty library.
