When Juan falls in love with her, she asks him to bring her all the fruit from the prized tree. The man does as she asks but must then face his employer. The clever conclusion proves just how truthful Juan is. Hayes's retelling of this tale is masterful and he manages to introduce several Spanish words without disturbing the flow of the text. The full-page paintings capture a distinct landscape and costume and convey the quiet drama of the story. Their dark jewel tones lend a brooding atmosphere, in keeping with the midsection of the tale. Great story and a very helpful tool when teaching theme.

With the ending never in doubt (check out the subtitle), the story drags on 4-5 pages too long, like a familiar joke burdened with too many details. Author Joe Hayes states in his closing note that he has "given the tale a more literary treatment than I usually do." The result is a story better suited for older readers (ages 7-10) than for a read-aloud bedtime book.As negative as that sounds, I actually like Hayes' book and his effort to fill out this adaptation of "The Faithful Servant." Each character's decisions and the solemn consequences are richly detailed in both the narrative and artist Joseph Daniel Fieldler's earthy, full-page paintings.My sons (ages 8 and 6) would have enjoyed the suspense, not knowing if Juan Verdades would be faithful to his employer, don Ignacio. However, the first words on the inside dust jacket flap are "Juan Verdades is an honest man." Combined with the unnecessary subtitle it was difficult to build suspense. There are a couple twists along the way but I won't spoil these. The rewards for Juan's honesty far exceed expectations.After the first reading to my sons, we discussed the other choices Juan could have made and the likely consequences of those actions. The conversation helped reinforce the book's valuable moral lesson.Rating: Four stars.

Juan Verdades is the foreman on a ranch. The owner of the ranch places a bet with another rancher that Verdades will never lie. He places the whole ranch on the line. The other rancher then sends his daughter to live with the first rancher and beguile Juan. The daughter succeeds in getting Juan to give her the apples from the owner's favorite tree. When Juan is called on the carpet in front of the two owners and questioned about where the apples went, he says that a fool picked them, and admits that he was that fool. Juan is eventually rewarded for his honesty by getting a ranch and the beguiling daughter. In addition to the moral lessons about truth and gambling, there is also some potential for learning about the life of yesteryear in New Mexico. The book is rather long, with about 2400 words, suitable for older kids.

This book is excellent. I am a senior in college graduating with a degree in elementary education, and I wrote a lesson plan last semester using this book. It is a wonderful book for 3rd to 4th grade children, as it helps them to develop their reading skills by identifying unknown words using the context of the story, and it also shows them an area of the world and a culture that is different from their own. In addition, the storyline is beautiful, about an honest man that would rather confess his wrongdoing than lie about it. He is a great model for honesty. The more times I read the book, the more I liked it!

My daughter and I love reading this book together. The artwork is childlike and pretty captivating. It captures the wonder and simplicity of the song. Though my daughter is outgrowing the board book phase, I suspect that we'll keep hanging on to this book for a while.

when i first heard this song sung by lois armstrong, many, many , many years ago....I KNEW IT WAS ONE OF MY MOST FAVORITE SONGS...EVER!!!then when i saw this illustrated book on amazon, i went CRAZY!!!in this wonderful world, this is A MOST WONDERFUL BOOK....my 4 year old grand daughter & i LOVE this book...not only do we love the illustrations & the words to this song BUT we also listen & sing along with mr. louis armstrong. we each have a copy, & every call we either sing, read or describe the illustrations to each other.. we've also developed a greeting: whenever we talk on the phone or 1st see each other...i ask "what do you want?" & she answers "a wonderful world!". we then laugh & giggle hysterically together !!!!!!!can't give enough idolation for this book!!! there's only i thing i would like to see corrected, is that , i believed it's marketed as a :"children's bookBUT let me testify that people of all ages will LOVE this book !!!!!p.s. i also dare anyone to try to read through these pages without lapsing into their own "louie armstrong's interruption" of singing it!!!

We checked this out of the library for our little one, and loved it so much we had to buy it. We’ve also purchased copies for three other babies who have had birthdays recently. The illustrations are beautiful and colorful, and the words are simply the lyrics to the song. My daughter asks Alexa to play the song while she sings along to her baby brother. We all love this book.

One of the best boards books I have read in ages. The words are so moving (they are from the song sung by Louis Armstrong, which we all know)and the pictures/illustrations are wonderful.

This book is beautifully illustrated ! I have always loved this lovely song so I was thrilled when I saw this book written especially for children. Each page has lines to the song as well as colorful sweet pictures of children and animals. My grandson and I read it together and loved it .I am sure this will become a favorite book for all of my grandchildren for years to come. This book included a cd of the incomparable Louis Armstrong singing " What A Wonderful World" as well. I am very impressed with this book and with the cd! Highly recommend !

We are immigrants from China who first came for graduate school. When we learned English in China, it was all about grammar and reading drill. Then we had to work so hard to study for GRE and TOEFL. Reading English is never so much fun, especially for my husband, until he began to read children's books including this book with our son. Now my husband can truly enjoy reading English. My son is only three but he is flipping through the pages happily, studying the pictures. The content on China in this encyclopedia is very concise and correct. Thus we have a general trust for the content in this book. We love the style, very concise and beautiful.

Santa brought this to our 7-year old last Christmas, and he still turns to it frequently at night, reading an article about something or another before bedtime. While some of the topics are a bit advanced (there's a section on WWII, for example, which got him asking about Adolf Hitler), the book is a keepsake. Thick, glossy pages, wonderful illustrations, and concise, insightful articles, perfect for a younger advanced reader. We liked this book so much, that we usually keep 2-3 copies on hand to give away at birthday parties. We've seen kids to whom we've given the book as a present reading it the next day on the school bus! If that's not a solid endorsement, I don't know what is! All in all, very highly recommended.

Eloise (almost 6-years old) loves to "read" her Encyclopedia. Especially now since she's actually learned to read.Out loud.Every. single. page.I shouldn't complain. I've learned a LOT.

Absolutely LOVELY encyclopedia! The pictures are amazing. The info is simple and effective. Any kid would want to go through this book. My four kids love it! Some are readers, and some are not, and they enjoy this one.

Bought this for my granddaughter. Her teacher said they will be using this book when they return to school. However my granddaughter is already enjoying the book with the great photos and easy to read. She is amazed and has learned a lot on her own.

Got it for my 5 year old and while it's a little advanced for him, he loves it. The only thing I wish is that it was in Alphabetical order instead of by categories. The kids Encyclopedia from when I was a kid was that way

Dr. Michael K. Lindell is Professor of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning, Texas A&M University; Senior Scholar, Hazard Reduction and Recovery Center, Texas A&M University; Adjunct Professor, Department of Psychology, Texas A&M University Dr. Lindell has over 30 years of experience in the field of emergency management, during which time he has conducted a long term program of research on the processes by which individuals and organizations respond to natural and technological hazards. Much of his research, especially that supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), has examined the processes by which affected populations respond to warnings of the imminent threat of a hazard. This research has been conducted in communities affected by hazards as diverse as flooding, volcanic eruption, hazardous materials, and hurricanes. Professor Lindell also has had extensive experience in providing technical assistance to government agencies, industry groups and private corporations in developing emergency plans and procedures. He has served six times as a consultant to the International Atomic Energy Agency in developing planning guidance for response to nuclear and radiological incidents, has made three presentations in National Academy of Sciences panels, and is currently a member of two National Academy of Sciences panels - Disasters Research in Social Sciences and Assessing Vulnerabilities Related to the Nation's Chemical Infrastructure. Professor Lindell has written extensively on emergency management and is the author of 70 technical reports, 70 journal articles and book chapters, and six books/monographs.

I won't say I love it since it's a textbook but I do love the low price. Way better than my school's bookstore.

This was a required reading for an emergency management class I was taking for school (to be a teacher). The class was fairly difficult and not as interesting as I expected, thus I gave the book a 4 stars because it was a lot of detail and we didn't use a lot of it.

Received package in a timely matter and is a very good book on Emergency Management, Homeland Security & First Responders Handbook and is excellent to use in getting your Degree in Emergency Management -FEMA Certifications.

This was a well written book that covered everything you need to know about managing emergencies for the community. He did enjoy the class and said the book was well written.

Good Book for school

Came in perfect condition, couldn't ask for more.

It was a textbook and read accordingly. As I live on Long Island and am part of an EM group, it filled in a lot of the gaps in my knowledge of the upper echelon. I'd recommend it to those starting to actively work in an EM group.

If you want just a glimpse I to how the emergency management world works, this is the best basic book to use.
