Meh. Really sounded like a fascinating concept. But chapter after chapter goes nowhere and doesn't develop any cohesive points. A few interesting anecdotes thrown in here and there, but they are rare bright spots in an otherwise very dull and pedantic, overly long book.

This is a book about how people exploit the architecture and infrastructure of cities to abscond with other people’s property. Manaugh shows us both how the masterminds of burglary think outside the box “Ocean’s Eleven” style, as well as how the dim dull-wits and junkies botch burglaries in hilarious ways. In the process, the author also shines a light on the ways in which the law enforcement community has had to update its technological and tactical capabilities to counter these threats.The book contains seven chapters. The first chapter lays the groundwork, particularly through discussion of the aforementioned extremes. On one hand, there is George Leonidas Leslie, an architect turned bank robber who would build accurate mockups in order to accurately rehearse robberies, and--on the other hand--there is the guy who used a ghillie suit disguise in a rock and mineral museum (which, not unsurprisingly, featured barren rock displays [down-playing vegetation] such that the guy stuck out like a guy in a ghillie suit in a rock display.)Chapter 2 details what Manaugh learned about burglary and the fight against it through his interviews with law enforcement, and—in particular—the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) helicopter unit.The next chapter focuses on how different types of buildings are violated by burglars, and apartment burglaries are prominent in the discussion. This isn’t just about how they breach the building, but how they discover when no one will be home.Chapter 4 is entitled “tools of the trade” and it reflects upon the skill-set that Hollywood suggests is associated with burglars—i.e. lock-picking and safe-cracking--but which constitute a less common set of tactics than one might think. Burglars usually favor the messier / quicker approach of busting walls and locks.Chapter 5 deals with a number of issues under the rubric of “inside jobs” but one of the most intriguing is its discussion of those who don’t break in at all, but rather who hide inside the target building awaiting closing time.The penultimate chapter is about that ever-present concern of burglars, the getaway. And sometimes the secret is what Black Widow says in “Captain America: Civil War”: “The first rule of being on the run is walk, don’t run.” The final chapter is a wrap-up, including a conclusion to the George Leonidas Leslie story that was brought up in the first chapter.There are notes and citations at the end of the book. There are no graphics. I think this book could have benefited from graphics. However, the author displayed such skill with language and story-telling that I didn’t seem to notice (or care) at the time of reading. I suspect Manaugh didn’t want to present too much detail for fear of being seen as an actual manual for crime, which this clearly is not.I found this book fascinating, and think you would enjoy it if you have any interests in cities, security, civil engineering, architecture, or just have a healthy curiosity about how buildings and cities work.

I loved the premise and wanted to like the book but the writing was so ... somewhere between mediocre and bad ... I quit reading it about 25% in (and thus never attended the book club meeting that was discussing it). It wasn't grammar/ punctuation/ capitalization/ word choice type of bad writing, but rather an irritating choice of storytelling technique. Actually, it reminds me of those TV shows where before every & after every commercial they repeat the punchline that will be coming up at the end of the show, as if they can't trust the viewer to PAY ATTENTION TO THE STORYLINE long enough to remember on their own (or catch on if coming to the show part way in). Ugh! Don't recommend.A totally different thread is that it did succeed in helping me feel less safe.To his credit, though, many of the ideas and stories were interesting: I simply couldn't talk myself into continuing to suffer his style of storytelling ... which, I suppose, some might actually enjoy. Hey: lucky them.

Not great if you're a true crime buff. A Burglar's Guide to the City reads more like a 300 page architectural history thesis than a book about burglary.I get the idea the author wanted to communicate, that architectural design and burglary are mutually-influential on each other, but that's kind of a nebulous point to make, and not one that anybody would really argue against in the first place.The book is at its best when it's indulging in true crime anecdotes, describing famous burglaries, the burglars who got away with it, and the people who dovetail with either. Unfortunately it drops the ball several times by not paying off some of these anecdotes and just generally over-defining terms.

Like other reviewers here, I was off-put by the tedious writing... and what felt like filler material. As a buyer, I thought this was a great topic. I'm t thinking that's exactly what the writer thought as well. As the topic progressed, I began to sense that there was less to this topic than I had imagined. Similarly, I felt that the writer encountered the same ditch, thus defaulting to fulfilling his writer/deal obligations and getting out of Dodge as cleanly as possible.

As a former professional burglar and architecture enthusiast, I wanted to have more of a roundup of exotic crimes. Instead, we spend a lot of time on mundane things, like ride-alongs with the LAPD helicopter. The prose is often quite overwrought when it's not warranted. As the author says, the truth is that most burglary is mundane and not carried out by master thieves. That's true, but it's also not terribly interesting. Even the parts in which he explores the relationship between the built world and the criminals who find other ways to use it seem flaccid. I would have like more like the first chapter with its false doors and secret warehouses. The modern world has plenty to offer to the crime aficionado too, with all of the digital crime that happens. Digital crime often involves a large amount of breaking and entering, or at least clever distribution of thumb drives. That would have been interesting, had he touched on it. The author references the classic book by Harry Houdini - The Right Way to do Wrong, which sits on my bedstand. It's a much better book about the strange world of crime and expectations.

This book combines two of my little one's greatest passions Pj Masks and dinosaurs! It will make an awesome gift and an awesome read in the cold winter evenings. It contains very cute images, and it even has a full page with stickers! Awesome book. Highly recommended!

I bought four of these books and they're based off of PJ Masks episodes. Unfortunately, these books have a LOT of words for bedtime stories! They take FOREVER to read through and my son would rather make up his own stories than listen to the entire (boring) book.

I have taught reading for ten years. I feel like this book is congested with too many words. It could be more concise for the age group. It also could stand to offer up more tools conducive to early literacy (repeated phrases or sounds, etc.) This is just a PJ MASK episode written in book form.

I love these "superhero" books for little kids. My grandson adores them. They are like the Mr. Rogers of superheroes. They get their power from their special pajamas (hence, PJ Masks), and they learn lessons like gentleness and team work. Very nice series.

A kid under 8 or so can't read it, but it's a great book for reading TO a younger child. It's the episode with the museum and my daughter loves it. Good binding, pages are sturdy, colors are bright and printing is clean. Zero complaints.

My son loves PJ Masks and when he received this book from his favorite episode, he was absolutely thrilled. Great buy.

Short soft cover book - grandson loves it.

Hope my grandkids will learn to love reading as much as they like watching the shows on TV.

Oldie but a goodie. I had to read this for my History of Education course. This really hit on how our education system was developed in the early 20th century. Most of us think this system has been in place since the 1800s but it hasn't. It also shows that basically our public school system has been "reforming" since it began.

Book has no marking but has signs of wear. Not bad though. Delivery was on time.

I was looking for a historical framework to view my community's local educational history. This book has been an outstanding aid in this effort. I live in the South where the education systems contain both urban and rapidly urbanizing schools and tend to be more consolidated organizationally. My state's and local events were known but this book brought them into context for me.I wish this book has been one of the texts used in my history of urban schools class and have since recommended it to my university.

Tyack, D. B. (1974). The one best system: A history of American urban education. Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press.Ellen Lagemann (1989) has observed, "One cannot understand the history of education in the United States in the twentieth century unless one realizes that Edward L. Thorndike won and John Dewey lost" (p.185). Put differently, in the words of David Tyack (1974), it was the administrative progressives who won and all the others who lost. In his classic work on the bureaucratization of schools in the late 1800s and early 1900s--The One Best System--Tyack suggests that school reformers of the late 19th century saw efficiency as the sine qua non to human progress, and therefore borrowed and amalgamated concepts like regularity, hierarchy, docility, punctuality, assessment, and conformity into evolving administrative structures of schools, for these qualities seemed to unequivocally spur the booming production in industrial outfits of the time. In short, schools became corporations. His thesis is clear and iterative, his prose distinctly rich, his revision of early historical accounts legitimate (especially those proffered by the likes of Elwood Cubberly), and perhaps most important, the literary arsenal from which he draws support is diffuse.As cities grew rapidly at the close of the 19th century, the need for social control became more imperative than ever. Tyack shows how school centralization in the early 20th century was merely microcosmic of broad shifts occurring in large cities (e.g., police, public health, welfare systems). In education, systematization of schools was veiled behind the banner of "taking schools out of politics"--a movement led by Wealthy Anglo Saxon Protestants (WASPs) who did not see themselves as "political" but as crusaders for an obvious good with objective means. Put differently, why democratize the governance and organization of schools when experts (WASPs) clearly believed there was one best system that would work anytime and anywhere? In the struggle for control over schools between 1890 and 1920, among the losers were board members representing local wards, teachers, and pedagogical progressives (all representing ethnically and culturally diverse perspectives about schools) who were thoroughly defeated by a powerful conglomerate of WASPs and media muckraking of the graft of machine politics. Among the greatest losers were Blacks, South Italians, and Poles, whose encounters with the bigotry of the one best system seemed most difficult. Tyack's paraphrasing of segregationist Theodore Bilbo captured the movement to a tee: "All this talk about taking the schools out of politics is a huge joke to intelligent people.... It means nothing except to take the schools out of your politics and put them in [mine]" (p. 284). Clearly, there was never such a thing as one best system for all.While Tyack's scholarship is unquestionably first-rate, his ability to deploy strong arguments and have fun at the same time is ingenious: Whether it is brawny students in one-room school houses beating up their schoolmasters in front of 5-year olds (and being demoted by the local school board not for fighting, but losing!), school janitors engaging in espionage for superintendents who wanted to insure implementation fidelity amongst teachers, textbook companies sending "alluring women as accomplices to blackmail school officials into favoring their wares" (p. 95), or explaining the literal origin of the expression, "toe the line," Tyack seamlessly weaves these disparate pieces back into his main thesis: social control of the young through the most formidable institution of enculturation--the school.Throughout my reading of Tyack, I couldn't help but think of the annoying but popular and indiscriminate use of the term "Best Practices" (originally a business term, by the way) in educational parlance. Tyack's book reminds us of the need to take such claims with a grain of salt. Instead of taking the hard-nosed and misleading high road to an unequivocal science of education (also known as the one best system), ideals of pluralism and decentralized decision-making should be embraced by school reformers, especially if schools are to be touted as truly democratic institutions.This should be a required reading for anyone interested in urban education.

This is an easy and interesting read about the history of American public education from the perspectives of those who lived it. Much is based on the writings of people in education - letters, diaries, editorials, etc. I was saddened by how similar some of the issues in the early 1900's are to current issues. Teachers complaining about standardized tests; struggles with how to deal with immigration; what to do about poor behavior. When read in concert with current writings, I think it will leave the impression that we are rarely progressive when it comes to public education in this country.

Every urban parent and teacher wonders why it is SO difficult to create good urban schools. Funding is certainly an issue, but something else seems to be wrong, something bigger and more unchangeable. Read this book, and you will find the answer: Urban schools were organized this way on purpose. They were structured to be impersonal, bureaucratic, and unequal.Great book. Tyack ranks as one of the best U.S. historians.

I purchased this book for my best friend that had a very late term miscarriage. I felt helpless as I tried to comfort and console her. No words could help ease her pain. This book was highly recommended to me by a few girlfriends that had experienced painful miscarriages.My best friend was so grateful for this book and said that it was very helpful. I know that nothing in this life will ever explain why such horrific things as miscarriages happen, but if a book can help in anyway then it's worth every penny in my opinion. Some wounds in this life will never heal and the loss of a child is one of those inexplicable wounds. I hope anyone reading this review that has experienced a devastating loss such as this will feel peace and God's undeniable Love and comfort at this time.

This book is compassionately and sensitively written. It is clear and concise, especially for a woman who is grieving the loss of a baby through miscarriage. It has been an instrument of healing for hundreds of women I have cared for and counseled. It also is a wonderful information guide for those who desire to know about miscarriage.

Here you will find medical and emotional support on possible causes, medical terminology, choices, decisions and helpful coping suggestions. As a grief counselor, I recommend it.

Little did I realize in 1977 when I was Kevin’s high school baseball coach that one day, over 40 years later, I’d be writing this review. Having been familiar with his passion for baseball and autograph acquisition, and by the way he was a better player than he alludes to in the book, I was very much looking forward to reading his accounts. It is an understatement to say what a joy it was to see all of this in print. I read every word, many more than once, over two evenings and marveled at the stories. Absolutely a must read for baseball fans. It will warm your soul. Great job Keats!!

When I found out that Kevin had written a book, I was curious since I have known him for a long time. His love of baseball was evident nearly 40 years ago when I first met him. He is a trusted person as an expert in his field and an honest person in real life. I am not even a baseball fan, but this book is an interesting read. It is interesting because it provides insights into people who are respected for their sport. Kevin pulls you into the lives of these great athletes and shows their humanity and respect for the game. For me, it is also a deep, insightful collection of stories that we all know were true because Kevin would never write anything except the truth.

I found it interesting that the author developed friendships with many of the baseball players he received autographs from. I read where he has over 10,000 autographs in his collection. I was hoping he would show some photos of his collection. Are they in a mancave? Or are they in more than one room? I would think that many autographs would take up some serious space. Did the author receive that many autographs thru the mail or where they acquired thru EBAY? Hopefully his upcoming Volume 2 book will have photos of his collection.

The child in all of us can fully appreciate this delightful book!If you ever dreamed of meeting one of your idols you will relish the richly told tales recounted by Mr. Keating in Waiting For A Sign.This book is a gem for baseball lovers young and old, it shares a slice of personal baseball history never before told and entertains from start to finish.Waiting For A Sign deserves a spot on your bookshelf!

This book is such a wonderful gift to baseball as the game Kevin describes is so different from that of today. It would be a great gift for every grandfather to give to their grandkids. How many wonderful conversations will come from a Q. and A. about the players from these stories.At a personal level, I felt I was reading a Pop-Up book. It is as if these men have occupied my home. In the main, it was the ease with which Kevin moved around these men and the ease they had with him. It seemed like I was watching a best friend giving service to best friends.There are two astonishing qualities of his writing. The first is the feeling of being present in the stories. It felt like I was eves dropping on two friends having coffee just enjoying the hell out of each other. The author disappeared. In painting one should not feel the painter. The same with special writing. The writing is so transparent... It is a first person script without the first person. The second astonishing quality is his control of the ”I”. We see and feel through the “I”. I kept waiting for the “I” to get in the way of the story but it doesn't. The humility that comes through the writing is one of its wonderful graces.Kevin truly produced a book with great merits in and of itself...he made the years disappear and we have the great fortune of knowing these men by the end of each chapter. That was a time for baseball and Kevin recreated it for a bunch of readers who would not know this time without it. Baseball should thank him for his passion in preserving this time and place. Great book!

I was captivated while reading this book. Kevin's knowledge of baseball and his enthusiasm in recalling his life collecting autographs has brought back so many childhood memories. This book is truly a look back in time when baseball was a game and not just a business. I recommend all sports fan read this and they like me remember our childhood heroes. I actually can’t tell you the last time I loved a book the way I loved this one. I grew up a passionate baseball fan as a child, and we had a hard breakup in high school for about 15 years. I’ve rediscovered a love for the game over the past 10 years or so ago, and this book took me back to that childhood passion I hadn’t really touched on since. I’d forgotten it. Not to say I’m not passionate about it now, but adult passion is just different...this hit on an ability for me to remember what it was like when I sent a prized 1987 Topps Jose Canseco card only to never get it back. The pain was real!Football filled the gap, and that’s where I got into autograph hunting, as well as memorabilia collecting. The human connection that Kevin Keating describes is entirely relatable to anyone that’s ever chased an autograph, or had an athlete toss them a ball in the stands.If you love baseball you should read this book.If you love collecting you should read this book.If you love them both, I just don’t think you’ll be able to put this book down. I can’t wait for Volume 2. Thanks for giving us such a great read Mr Keating!

I enjoyed Mr. Keating's book tremendously. Like the author, I started collecting baseball autographs as a kid and still do to this day, and anyone else who fits that description will definitely find that reading Waiting for a Sign is time well spent. From his early days of graphing outside of team hotels with his father to the relationships that he has built with some of the game's greats in adulthood, I found every chapter of this book satisfying, and I can't wait to read the second volume.
