Corners were cut, warnings of potential dangers ignored, and safety precautions passed by, but no one inside the store knew that, until a wall of the demolished building crumbled ahead of schedule and came crashing down on its neighbor. The roof of the Salvation Army store buckled with no warning. Those who were lucky escaped. The other thirteen found themselves buried under the rubble. In the aftermath, rescuers flooded the scene, concerned parties searched for their loved ones, and a single question rose from the ruins: Why did this happen? Were the contractors at fault? Evidence of drug use and overall incompetence suggests the contractors had a lot to answer for, but there were bigger players as well. Someone paid for the demolition project, hired less-than-ideal laborers, and neglected to pay close attention to the execution. And what about the city? Philadelphia's construction regulations were clearly insufficient to prevent this disaster. The author takes the time to translate legal jargon & procedure in such a way that the reader is able to appreciate the challenges that were faced in assigning culpability to a popular charitable organization that, in this instance, truly dropped the ball in putting the safety of its employees & patrons above profit. The book focuses on the legal representation & the pursuit of justice for the most severely injured victim of the collapse, Mariya Plekan. I can't presume to understand what it was like for Mariya to have been buried in rubble undetected for 13 hours, only to finally be rescued and lose half her body, but the author's intense description of her struggles & remarkable will to live puts the reader right in the courtroom, on Mariya's team, rooting for the justice & compensation she deserved. Well done!

FINAL DECISION: Quirky and sweet contemporary romantic comedy. I read this one on a whim and ended up loving the story between two opposites. It was cute and fun and just perfect for a couple hour's escape.THE STORY: Hazel Bradford is a lot to handle. Chaos follows her everywhere, she doesn't have a filter and she has a habit of doing or saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. She met Josh Im in college when she vomited on him at a party. Ten years after college, the two meet again and Hazel is determined to be Josh's best friend. After a bad breakup, Hazel convinces Josh to agree to go on a blind date with Hazel. Well, they would each set the other up with someone and they would double date. The two have no interest in one another, but somehow their dates don't work out and the attraction between Hazel and Josh keeps growing.OPINION: Some books you just have to approach with an open mind and an open heart. Not that everyone would love this book if they did, but I know that I had to be open to this book to enjoy it.Hazel is a lot to take in. She is a whirlwind -- chaotic, intemperate, brash. But she also is completely open to loving other people. She cares deeply. The chaos and her inability to censor herself would be something that might annoy me greatly -- until I saw how caring she is. She wants to love so much that she opens herself up and is hurt again and again. And yet she keeps caring for others. And that is what makes her who she is.She is desperately aware that people are attracted to her, but that she becomes too much and people expect (or want) her eventually to tone down. But she doesn't. Although Hazel is confident in herself, she also doesn't believe that she has any chance with Josh. She dubbed him "Perfect" as in the model for the perfect guy. Her caring for him makes her want to be close to him, but because she doesn't believe he can be for her, she instead wants to be his best friend.Hazel and Josh begin a friendship that is funny and sweet at the same time. She brings color and imperfection into his life. Josh brings some order into Hazel's. Josh, however, is always completely accepting of Hazel. He may not understand how her mind works, but he doesn't criticize her or try to make her into someone else. Hazel is a force of nature and Josh is the calm in the storm.The two end up on a series of terrible dates (with other people) which end up being an odd courtship between them. I loved the humor and the pure acceptance between these two.This is the first Christina Lauren book I've actually read. I have a bunch on my TBR list and own a bunch, but I have always set those aside to read something else. Why did I decide on this one? Because the hero is Korean American. I thought the interracial romance was handled well.My only complaint about the story was the ending and the epilogue. I'm not a fan of leaving obvious story points unfinished and them coming back in the epilogue to give answers. I love epilogues, but personally prefer that the story be complete without it and then have the epilogue as a bonus. But that is a quibble with what was a wonderful, light and fun romance.WORTH MENTIONING: The story is told in alternating first person points of view.CONNECTED BOOKS: JOSH + HAZEL'S GUIDE TO NOT DATING is a standalone.STAR RATING: I give this book 4.5 stars.NOTE: I received an ARC of this book via Netgalley in order to help prepare this review. Why do authors have to alienate people by getting political and pushing their views on readers? I used to read everything these 2 write but the politics is ruining it for me. I read to escape not to get authors views pushed in my face. If you just need an escape walk away because you sure know how they believe and it's in your face. The end really capped it off but innuendos throughout were there too.

It is, in my humble opinion, the best Christina Lauren contemporary romance to date. I haven’t felt pure joy while reading in a long time and Hazel Bradford and Josh Im brought it to me. With countless laugh out loud moments, this book was so much more than I could have hoped for and I’m thankful I read it. I’m thankful that Hazel didn’t need to conform to become dateable. I’m thankful that Josh Im is basically perfect and in love with all of her quirks. Im thankful I took a break from the ARC cave and read this book.

It has become apparent to me that I tend to love quirky and special female characters. Hazel was amazing! She was funny and very unique, a breath of fresh air. In a genre where there are so many other romance novels, she excelled, that's for sure.What's the novel about?Our heroine Hazel Camille Bradford lacks a filter and she behaves in a different way than your usual heroine. She says things without thinking first. She rambles when she should remain quiet. She puts herself in embarrassing situations but the difference is that she knows she is like this and she accepts herself this way. She doesn't want to settle for a man who doesn't like her for herself. In a way, she reminded me of Bridget Jones."The world seems full of men who are initially infatuated by our eccentricities, but who ultimately expect them to be temporary. "Hazel met Josh when they were in college and the first time she met him she made quite an impression after vomiting all over his shoes. Over the years in college, she created a reputation for being quite crazy and she knows some men are uncomfortable with her personality thinking she's too much to handle. In college, Hazel had a crush on Josh. After all, he's "the blueprint for Perfect", but she knew a relationship with him was impossible.Josh was the quiet one. A good guy whom a decade later is currently dating a girl who's living in California. The long distance relationship is hard on him. He then bumps into Hazel who wants to turn him into her best friend. In a turn of events, Hazel is best friends with his sister Emily without realizing it but now that Josh is back in her life, she wants him as her best friend. Hazel thinks Josh will never want to be more than friends with her because he knows how she is, a tornado or more like a hurricane. In her mind, if you can date them then you can make them your best friend.As friends, Hazel and Josh decide to go on double dates after Josh discovers his girlfriend is being unfaithful to him. Of course, the double dates go horribly wrong but it also makes Hazel and Josh realize that there are other feelings in play. Discovering those feelings are what makes this book so humorous and sexy.I love this novel. It was deliciously funny, witty and one of a kind! I've read a bunch of AT books and this one is what I would call typical. It was rather choppy, too. He would be talking about having dinner someplace, then in the next paragraph he was off and walking again the next day. No flow to it. There were a few very small black and white photos in the kindle edition, which did nothing for me. If you are going to write an AT book, include photos. I was totally disgusted reading him describe in detail the pus in his feet and describe the actual shape of his toes. He was really focused on his feet. Not something people really want to read. Yes, if you walk the AT, I'm sure you have foot issues, but to go into such detail was really unnecessary. I've never read one AT book where the author shares any insight. It makes me wonder if anyone actually FEELS anything other than walk, eat, sleep, do it again the next day........till the end.

I liked this book very much. I see the criticisms in some of the other reviews and I can't relate. One recent one says not to necessarily look to him as a role model -- well, not once does Mr. Miller suggest others follow his path, on the hike or anywhere else. Hike your own hike, live your own life, I think he's saying.I sometimes walk portions on the AT while on day hikes in Virginia and Maryland. I have toyed with the idea of doing the whole thing. One thing the book convinces me of is, no, I don't want to do the whole thing. At least not as a thru-hiker.I appreciated Mr. Miller's story and his experience will help me on the trails. His personal insights will help me as well.

I got this and another AT book, because I wanted to understand the experience of a through hiker as closely as possible, to understand if it's something I want to undertake. I've recently gotten the bug, so to speak, and I just want to know - is this something I could possibly do? I live a pretty sheltered life, and I don't want to minimize this challenge - I want to understand it in depth so that if I do ever undertake it, I will have a good idea of what to expect and hopefully, not flame out.Of course there are a lot of choices of first-person AT through-hike testimonials. I chose this one because I could identify with the author in a couple of ways - my work life is one of corporate / office-centric work that feels restrictive and locked-in, and I am at an age where one might begin to question, do I still have the vigor to take on such a challenge (a bit older than the author was when he started)? Or might I five years from now?I did really enjoy the book. The author has a dry humor that just rarely shows through, and at least once I wondered, is he messing with the reader? I do wish he would have deployed it a bit more often. More than that, I was hoping for a bit more discussion on the practical side - cooking meals, filtering water, climbing steep sections, setting up tents in wind and rain, battling bugs, sleeping near noisy, smelly strangers, not showering for days at a time, and yes, going #2 in the woods. There are some mentions on these and other practical matters, but mostly they are not discussed in detail. Some might appreciate that, but I was looking for the nitty gritty of "This is what it's like living in the woods for months on end". One aspect that did get a good detailed treatment was foot maladies, foot leg/health, and footwear (all very important). Another was the more general topic of 'food acquisition' shall I say (as opposed to cooking).The book was laid out very well. The organization and chapter-heading maps did a good job of helping me understand the flow of the walk and the length of sections. The chapters did a good job of helping me understand some of the personality and relative difficulty of different sections of the trail, and a few of the many interesting towns, hostels, inns, trail waypoints, landmarks, and people. I appreciated the author's personality and how he discussed his motives, and aligned his dedication to his family to the ultimately somewhat self-centric decision to go on a hike alone for months. No offense intended to any through-hikers. I think it's also a grand way to show your family what is possible, and hopefully inspire them not to limit themselves. Along with friends, co-workers, and strangers on Amazon.

I kept waiting for some insight or even a glimpse into what the trip meant to Miller but it really reads like a trip log where he chronicled his daily hike with little to no description of his surroundings or emotions. It was interesting for a while - right up until I realized that every chapter was virtually the same as the last with a (slightly) different list of characters and states. The endless roll of hiker's trail names and the description of the rocks and mud on the trail all ran together by the end. I wasn't looking for another "Wild" but something besides a recounting of the daily mileage, blisters and other hikers would have been nice. It did get me motivated to try a long distance hike (not a thru hike) though.

I loved this no-nonsense account of a thru hike on the AT. It's very different from Wild, which I also loved, by Cheryl Strayed about her hike o. The Pacific Crest Trail. Both books made me feel as if I were there on the trail. I envy Miller for having tea courage to pursue his dream. I salute his wife for supporting him. I feel privileged to have been able to hike vicariously on both coasts by reading the books. I've been on tiny (more like miniscule) sections of each trail. I thank Miller and Strayed for letting me experience more of them.

This type of book should be required reading for every man and woman. Completion of such epic adventures becomes a major bookmark in anyone's life. One of my sons did the AT in 1983 and I am still so proud of him for all that he did to plan and execute this glorious, rigorous trip. I think it still gives his current excellent family and professional life an extra sparkle and he will always appreciate his accomplishment.It probably was one of a few events (and a VERY encouraging wife) that influenced me to decide to pursue one of my lifelong goals to retire early, buy a sailboat in France to sail across the Atlantic. No question it's one of the best life decisions the both of us ever made!My thanks to the author for this gift of joy, recollection and encouragement!

This book has been a blessing for me. I am starting over being a new mom again after 18 years since my last pregnancy and it has eased my anxiety with how much things have changed over the years. Great book!

Got this for my daughter when she had her first baby. She has found it very helpful, a good reference book rather than something you read all the way through. You can look up the topic that interests you and it is all in there. Just about anything you can think of to ask about what is happening with your baby. I had the same book way back in the day and I knew this was an excellent guide for a new parent. This edition is updated with current information. Highly recommended.

This is a great read for new parents! I'm still following along with it since my baby isn't a year old yet and it covers almost all my inquiries. From safety(don't skip this and assume you know it all already--there's always something you'll overlook), to skin conditions, to Breastfeeding tips, etc... The only thing I was unable to find was a part covering sleep regression. I realize it's a book, not an encyclopedia so it can't cover everything! But for that reason I decided to knock off a star since it's a pretty big deal. Overall great information in a clear, cut to the chase style.

I used the "What To Expect When You're Expecting" book and it was super helpful. When I realized they had a book for the first year I had to get it. This is especially nice, as being a new mom is already overwhelming. I just flip to a seemingly applicable section and quickly find answers to my worried mom questions. Everything is laid out and organized perfectly. The glossary makes things easy to find. It has been very helpful .

This might as well be called "the Baby Bible!" It is awesome. It takes you step by step through every month of your babies life. Every question I could possibly have has been answered within this book. I enjoy reading it while my baby is napping, sometimes I skip ahead a month or two to find out what new milestones to expect. Being able to know which milestones are ahead is great, because then I can prepare the next activities and necessities for my babies growth. I was able to lower my crib just in time for my baby to learn how to roll over. This book has been 100% accurate in every detail. This is the same author as the previous book I purchased "what to expect, when you're expecting," which was also an amazing book to have while pregnant and nervous of what is yet to come. If you want to learn all about babies needs within the first year, definitely purchase this book. Also makes for a great gift! Love it & Highly recommend!

I bought this for my daughter who is expecting her first child. I had read the What to Expect When you are Expecting 30 years ago and what surprised to see it is still a top hit with today's generation. It seemed a natural fit to follow-up with this book. It even has helpful information on what you need and should put on your baby shower registry! Would highly recommend to anyone expecting a baby whether it's your first or your second or third. Very informative and a must have read to help maneuver through that first year.

I love the way this book is set up. Because it does not have to be read from start to finish I am not overwhelmed. This is especially nice, as being a new mom is already overwhelming. I just flip to a seemingly applicable section and quickly find answers to my worried mom questions. As this is the beauty of this particular book, I would not advise purchasing the Ebook. I don't believe you can flip through an ebook with the same results.

This has been the most helpful baby book I have found. It is a classic guide that is regularly updated over the years and instead of telling you how to do things, the author gives you the pros and cons of all options and facts to back it all up. As a first time mom, this book has helped me make important decisions as a parent and to better understand my baby and his development. I also love that it has information on almost every topic meant for dad to read. I think this is great because we often leave the fathers in the dark when it comes to these books and making them feel included and to help them understand things from a fathers view rather than a mothers is very helpful. My fiancé loved reading the sections for dad and looked forward to discussing what we both read.

Federal Courts is hard enough without the textbook being incomprehensible on top of it all. This book needs to be comprehensively edited to slim down the unnecessarily long sentences. It also needs to rewrite the sentences so they are in plain English rather than convoluted word salad. I’m not talking about the cases or the principles; those are difficult, to be sure, but adding on top of it having to constantly translate this textbook’s sentence structure into something I can understand makes Federal Courts even more frustrating. Every sentence in the notes seems to have the subject and verb separated by three or more clauses and use complicated verb constructions for no reason at all. Why not say “state procedure was accepted” instead of “state procedure had a claim to acceptance”? No good reason. Why can you not say “the court exceeded its jurisdiction because...” instead of “the court, because it had not made the findings required by the Act in order to issue an injunction in a labor dispute, had exceeded its jurisdiction”? By the time I get to the end of the sentence, I’ve forgotten why I read that middle part. This book is abhorrent and needs a serious overhaul. Lawyers today are taught that we should write in English. This book flies in the face of everything we are taught.

Be warned -- I bought a "new" edition, but it was a worn copy with an actual label slapped on it that said "new item." Clearly not new -- improper advertising. I am returning the book and getting it straight from the publisher instead.

Perfect textbook! It was in in pristine condition!

This handy little book provides a perfect introduction to the island of Barbados. There are a couple of maps, and plenty of lists of attractions and restaurants by region. The contents are well organized. The book itself is small enough to tuck away into a day pack, making it a nice take-along without weight or bulk.

The listed price is $4800....!!!!! so I DID NOT ORDER IT....... i don't know how else to point this out.
