I bought this to replace my old America's Test Kitchen cookbook; with the red cover, 3-ring binder style which I LOVE but was filled with stained pages, pages falling out, etc. The new book does not have tabs to separate the sections which help me quickly get to the recipes I want. Some of my favorite recipes are not included, or in a different place, and the cross-referencing is no longer included. For example,the pecan pie recipe no longer cross-references which page the info on toasting nuts is. The info is still in the cookbook but not cross-referenced with the recipe. I still have my old cookbook and it is still my go-to cookbook. Disappointed because I love the America's Test Kitchen recipes just not the new format.

Very good cookbook. It is very similar to the America's Test Kitchen Cooking Scool Cookbook. It goes over reasons why the recipe works. It also has variations to recipes. Very diverse recipes with everything from breakfast, appetizers, vegetarian recipes, grillin recipes and desserts. Very good value for the price. Will definitely be something that I pass down to my daughter.These is no table of contents, which is annoying. New chapters are denoted with a red block in corner. I went through and placed tabs on all the pages, where new chapters began. This was very easy, as I could easily tell where the chapters began on the side of the book.

Haven't found a bad recipe yet, and we've tried a lot of them. They also have yummy recipes for all the side dishes and condiments.Check out the Salmon fish cakes, and MAKE YOUR OWN FRESH TARTAR SAUCE !!! You've never had good tartar sauce until you make your own ( mayo and dill pickles, I also add banana peppers and marinated veggies, drain the pickle mixture in a paper towel until dry, then add to the mayo in a bowl ).

My better half uses this tome with great frequency, and she is PICKY about her cookbooks. 'Nuf said.Ok, I'll say a little more. This is quite comprehensive and is a great and oft used reference. It rests on a stand 2 feet from the kitchen anytime we need a quick idea for a marinade, tips on how long to cook meats, and successful baking recipes.New standard for cooking reference book. If you cook, you will probably use this. If you want to learn to cook, America's Test Kitchen helps you with bulletproof recipes and explanations for WHY they work. I like knowing why, personally.

In LOVE with this cookbook. I have already made two of my favorite meals using the recipes in this book and i swear i have been doing them wrong for years! This is the first cookbook i have read that i actually enjoyed flipping the pages, looking at the pictures, techniques and tips. A lot of the recipes even have step by step pictures which i really enjoyed. I have recently fell in love with the America's Test Kitchen show and wanted to try this book and I am soooo glad i did. A definite must have in the kitchen! (especially their chocolate chip cookie recipe!)

Amazing content for the novice chef. Everything from A to Z including how long eggs are good for after the sell by date. Love it! I use to record the America's Test Kitchen tv shows on the weekends when I seen a recipe I wanted to try, but now I can save space on my DVR because of this cookbook! It's got everything. Not only great recipes, but they preface every recipe with "Why it works" which is very interesting information. Tons of cookbooks out there, but you can't possibly go wrong with this one.

Bought as a gift for brother in law who loves to cook. Opened it up to make sure everything was good and I just have to say this book is beautiful! Has pictures of almost every recipe, goes in to great detail and is just really well made. I will be buying one for myself!

How do you give a zero star review? I have the author as my teacher and she is clearly useless giving arbitrary grades without reason. But that isn't the point of this review - I agree with a previous reviewer who stated:"The book is nothing more than copy and paste from other sources. You have a citation every paragraph. It seems to me the author has no clue about teaching, or the subject."I'm not sure that this author even knows anything about the subject but knows how to steal other people's comments legally through citations. Very poorly written with incomplete thoughts and ideas. The writing is disjointed and doesn't have a cohesive presentation of ideas.

What can be better than reading a George Carlin book? That's right! Having him read it to you!!! I'm not going to waste your time covering the material contained on this wonderful 7 disk set because with over 8 hours of content, where should I start? That was rhetorical so keep your comments to yourself! Yes, George helped shape more than just my sarcasm as it was the early 80's when I was a young teen I found St. Carlin.I should make it perfectly clear that while most of the content has been previously released in other forms, the way Carlin reads will make you feel like he is doing this specifically for you and there is no other way to experience his genius in such an intimate, one-on-one manner. Now take your sick mind out of the gutter because I know exactly what you were thinking reading that last sentence. And don't forget to order this set.You will definitely thank me in the morning.

George Carlin in his younger days (70s and 80s) was at the height of his career. This audio book, however, except for a few excerpts from "Braindroppings," is more of a rant against social views. Here is Carlin not so much as a comedian, but as a social commentator. Take "Napalm and Silly Putty:" it's an angry rant about things that annoy him.I am a big fan of Carlin's earlier works when he would philosophize about something off-the-wall and make people both laugh and then think about what he said. In this audio book, though, it's one expletive after the other, so be warned. This is the mature Carlin There IS a difference between angry rants and funny rants. Carlin has delivered amusing rants in his younger years and his delivery all made the difference (his voice, his three-second pause, his eyebrow lift, his smirk). Obviously on an audiobook one can't see his face, but one can hear his anger. Good humor is funny because it's truth delivered with some exaggeration. This collection is more anger than humor.The interview with Terry Gross is pleasing and so is Carlin's piece on "stuff" which is more in line with Carlin's older rants. This is a collection of the older, more mature Carlin and he is speaking his mind

If you do not own this set, get it. It's a must have for any fan of comedy, from the Master. WORTH every cent. But don't let the kids get a hold of it. Some of the seven filthy words are used. Cracked me up. Can't be depressed if you own this!!!

Great books, and it is even a better treat because they are read to you by the man himself, GC!!!. I enjoyed listening to him, he added alot of flare to the readings.

I love George Carlin and this one does not disappoint. His flair for language and the irony in everyday life is always on spot!

8 hours (7 discs) of some of George Carlin's funniest material, read by the man himself! No new routines, of course, since he's reading from previous works, but everything is just as hilarious as ever.Since this is an audiobook, recording was done in an acoustically-controlled studio, with no mic problems or crowd noises. This makes for a whole different mood/delivery than his usual live-concert recordings, and helps the material seem fresh... even though some dates as far back as the 70's.But lawdy, I just have to laugh out loud when I read other reviews where someone complains about Carlin using "expletives", being "harsh", or "too cynical". Throughout his nearly 50-year career, and especially after his identity change in the early 70's, he made it obvious that for him, nothing was sacred. And he'd often state his mantra that words themselves are not "bad"-- but intentions and interpretations certainly can be (and frequently are). Or, to put it another way: where the hell have you been-- locked in a closet somewhere? And there's no doubt that George Carlin was one of the most original, influential, and progressive comedy artists, ever.Anyone who really followed him over the decades is fully aware that George assumed several parody-personas, in order to convey his observations and criticisms of humanity and its foibles. And yes, as the years went by, those personas tended toward cynicism. But frankly, when you consider the subjects that he'd revisit, over and over, and particularly when you read his several biographies and autobiographical writings, you become aware that under all of his seemingly unfeeling and curmudgeonly rantings was a true idealism, and a fervent wish that humanity could somehow, someday, transcend the barbaric and myopic behavior that has become so commonplace in our species.One long look at the condition of the world, and the seeming inability of our kind to rise above the inherent cruelty of blind self-interest, should be enough to make one realize why the clever and keenly observant idealist in Carlin would gradually become cynical, even fatalistic. What intelligent person wouldn't?The world, my friend, is quite often a very nasty place. And George continually strove to use his razor-sharp humor to shred our herd-like adherance to the common myths that cause us to ignore, or just resignedly accept this fact, without being outraged... and to prod us to maybe, just possibly, do something about it.So in short-- if you don't like him, don't listen. It's your very sense of self-righteous "offense" that he's pointing out, to your hard little head. If you can't stomach it, then stick to Carrot Top or whoever floats your boat.If, however, you DO love Carlin's work, and all he stood for, then you will find this release to be an invaluable addition to your comedy/satire/social-commentary arsenal... and you will, not surprisingly, laff yer butt off.

Note: This review takes a look at Frye’s remarkable book on the Bible as a literary work. Frye steers clear of any preaching or evangelizing in this work and everything I have read by him. I connect his scholarly approach to the overheated rhetoric of the New Atheism in a speculative, not a descriptive spirit. If you read this book, you may see where I am grounding this brief review in Frye’s analysis. If you do not, my apologies.I have always thought that the Bible should come with an instruction book. This book by Northrop Frye, The Great Code: The Bible and Literature, is that book. Of course, I am half-jesting about the need for such a book. But, half-jesting means half-not-jesting.The vogue of the New Atheists has come and gone, but the effects of their onslaught on religious belief stretch far and wide. Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris, and Richard Dawkins would do well to consult Prof. Frye's erudite exposition of the construction, conventions, and literary dimensions of the text they presume to know so well and deride so thoroughly. The unsophisticated approach taken by the New Atheists is really a ruse to throw everything into the same kettle and set it to boiling. Little else is accomplished with their faux explication.Frye shows how correctly to order the pieces that make up the whole and demonstrates the relationships between and among these component pieces.Northrop Frye was arguably the greatest literary critic of the 20th century. There are hints in this work of seeds of responses to New Historicism, reader response, and even deconstructive approaches to the Bible in the conclusion. It strikes me as funny that the intellectuals I mentioned above steer far clear of any new literary analysis approach to the Bible. Frye does not develop his sprouts of ideas, but I see hints that might prove interesting to pursue.Anyone who is interested in figuring out what the Bible is doing would certainly be better served reading Northrop Frye than listening to most preachers or Hitchens, Harris, Dawkins and Dennett.What has always fascinated me about Frye is his incredible skill in systematizing his ideas and clearly communicating the structure of his ideas. One chart or table of Frye's is worth hundreds of pages of the continuous prose of many other critics. Immanent in this work, and peeking through or penetrating this world's dimensions, is a radical reconfiguration of what it means to be human and why so many brilliant, thoughtful people believe in Jesus and his revolutionary teachings and ethos.This book is provocative without trying to be and fascinating without attitude. Just watching Professor Frye laying out his argument, developing the logical connections that fuse the Bible into unity is a lesson in language, reasoning and intellectual discipline. These are all in short supply. If you read it, you will be glad you did.

Amazon forced me to select stupid options in my review. The Great Code isn't a novel but rather one of the best scholarly analyses of the Bible as literature by a premier literature scholar, Northrop Frye. As one would expect, Frye is especially strong on the archetypal elements of the Bible, but I also enjoyed his discussion of intertextuality--the repeated images and motifs, the many ways in which the various writers of the books in the Old and New Testaments referred to the language of earlier texts in the canon in the later texts. If you could only read two books on the Bible as literature, read The Great Code and Robert Alter's The Art of Biblical Narrative.

I'm a big fan of the work of the late Northrup Frye, whom I consider to be a champion of literary criticism. Of all his books, this was designed to be his magnum opus. It's intriguing, post-graduate level material and worthy of study for anyone serious about exploring the foundations of western culture and the belief systems woven throughout it.

For readers this is an incredible boring book. I loved it. It shows how the Bible does a great circle and is a fantastic place for metaphors.

After his "Anatomy of Criticism" (the very best and most important work of Canadian critic Northrop Frye, IMHO), and "Fearful Symmetry", add this book to your reading list of literary criticism.Recommended!

My husband loved it

I recently finished this book and still haven't lost the sensation and the sweet taste of the author style. A very special one indeed. Other reviewers have talked about the topic of the book and the thesis that the author in fact conveys, but to me, what matters is the way in which he does it. I mean, professor Frye not only was trying to say something, he was saying it. He doesn't try, he does it. This characteristic is essential to understand my recommendation. Northrop Frye writes to be understood and this is his primary interest. And you as a reader do notice and appreciates it.Now, the topic is not easy. It is about transmitting the way in which the Bible was written --or produced. It was set up in so different epochs and with so different literary resources or "tropes," as you can imagine. We are so linked to our own time that it is hard to see that literature wasn't always the same. So we not always had metaphors, allegories, ironies as we see them today. And in showing you this, professor Frye is unequivocal. He gives you lots of illustrative examples that serve to clear every single point.Furthermore, to do this, professor Frye is reading the AV (Authorized Version) of the Bible in detail and as a whole, so he is able to connect, for example, the beginning in the Genesis with the end in the Revelation. As long as he does it, everything began to emerge as a machinery, a very original one because it doesn't have an author as we understand that figure today. In the Bible, more important than the author is the editor, the person that in different times was binding different patches of several hundreds or thousands of documents and commentaries in order to present them as a one solid body of contents. This happened many many times, so the task for any researcher consists in doing something as decoding the book as a biologist does with the DNA. That's the reason, perhaps, behind the title that professor Frye put on the cover.I have read several books on this same topic and if you have done the same, then this book is not going to be one more, is going to be a real advance both in knowledge as in understanding. The Bible Code is a literary review of the Bible not a historical one. This is not a book about the history of another, even though history is present as a point of fact. It's not possible to bypass or to jump over history if you are talking about the Bible. But Frye touches the point without falling in the historical account which is not his field. He just shows you the context by recurring to what the experts and scholars know about the topic. And then he follows with the literary tree (a very loaded one, really).Who should read this book? Anyone interested in literature or religion or history, or those three put together. This book is not for losing the Christian faith. Not to become an atheist. Is just for knowing how the Bible was built, what were the state of the art at the time for writing about God before Jesus time and some years after his dead, why the Bible is so important for the ulterior development of literature and the way we see and talk about the world around us. The Bible laid the foundation of our ethos as the Euclidean geometry was the foundation of mathematics. So this book is a fountain of everything we read as literature: there are the tropes, the conventions, the legends, the beliefs, whatever you want. The Bible is in the very origin of our imagination and The Code Book conveys exactly that.Finally: In terms of style I would say that the author writes every sentence as the last. He writes beautifully with no imperfections, he uses the written language for illuminating the room in a sense that could be classical. He is far from being ornamental, he is self contained and --as the good writers do-- has always the reader in his mind. And that is always appreciated.Five stars for a comprehensive and highly readable book which is, like some others, but not many, a perfect essay.
