I'm not going to waste your time covering the material contained on this wonderful 7 disk set because with over 8 hours of content, where should I start? That was rhetorical so keep your comments to yourself! Yes, George helped shape more than just my sarcasm as it was the early 80's when I was a young teen I found St. Carlin.I should make it perfectly clear that while most of the content has been previously released in other forms, the way Carlin reads will make you feel like he is doing this specifically for you and there is no other way to experience his genius in such an intimate, one-on-one manner. Now take your sick mind out of the gutter because I know exactly what you were thinking reading that last sentence. And don't forget to order this set.You will definitely thank me in the morning.
George Carlin in his younger days (70s and 80s) was at the height of his career. This audio book, however, except for a few excerpts from "Braindroppings," is more of a rant against social views. Here is Carlin not so much as a comedian, but as a social commentator. Take "Napalm and Silly Putty:" it's an angry rant about things that annoy him.I am a big fan of Carlin's earlier works when he would philosophize about something off-the-wall and make people both laugh and then think about what he said. In this audio book, though, it's one expletive after the other, so be warned. This is the mature Carlin There IS a difference between angry rants and funny rants. Carlin has delivered amusing rants in his younger years and his delivery all made the difference (his voice, his three-second pause, his eyebrow lift, his smirk). Obviously on an audiobook one can't see his face, but one can hear his anger. Good humor is funny because it's truth delivered with some exaggeration. This collection is more anger than humor.The interview with Terry Gross is pleasing and so is Carlin's piece on "stuff" which is more in line with Carlin's older rants. This is a collection of the older, more mature Carlin and he is speaking his mind

If you do not own this set, get it. It's a must have for any fan of comedy, from the Master. WORTH every cent. But don't let the kids get a hold of it. Some of the seven filthy words are used. Cracked me up. Can't be depressed if you own this!!!

Great books, and it is even a better treat because they are read to you by the man himself, GC!!!. I enjoyed listening to him, he added alot of flare to the readings.
I love George Carlin and this one does not disappoint. His flair for language and the irony in everyday life is always on spot!
8 hours (7 discs) of some of George Carlin's funniest material, read by the man himself! No new routines, of course, since he's reading from previous works, but everything is just as hilarious as ever.Since this is an audiobook, recording was done in an acoustically-controlled studio, with no mic problems or crowd noises. This makes for a whole different mood/delivery than his usual live-concert recordings, and helps the material seem fresh... even though some dates as far back as the 70's.But lawdy, I just have to laugh out loud when I read other reviews where someone complains about Carlin using "expletives", being "harsh", or "too cynical". Throughout his nearly 50-year career, and especially after his identity change in the early 70's, he made it obvious that for him, nothing was sacred. And he'd often state his mantra that words themselves are not "bad"-- but intentions and interpretations certainly can be (and frequently are). Or, to put it another way: where the hell have you been-- locked in a closet somewhere? You do KNOW who George Carlin was, right???That sort of short-sightedness is particularly amusing when it comes from those who claim to be "big fans" of Carlin... inevitably, these turn out to be folks who liked his material from the 70's, but lost track of him over the years, and apparently expected him to stay "top-40" and keep doing the same things, over and over. A true artist (in any field) will NEVER stay still, and will always push the boundaries. And there's no doubt that George Carlin was one of the most original, influential, and progressive comedy artists, ever.Anyone who really followed him over the decades is fully aware that George assumed several parody-personas, in order to convey his observations and criticisms of humanity and its foibles. And yes, as the years went by, those personas tended toward cynicism. But frankly, when you consider the subjects that he'd revisit, over and over, and particularly when you read his several biographies and autobiographical writings, you become aware that under all of his seemingly unfeeling and curmudgeonly rantings was a true idealism, and a fervent wish that humanity could somehow, someday, transcend the barbaric and myopic behavior that has become so commonplace in our species.One long look at the condition of the world, and the seeming inability of our kind to rise above the inherent cruelty of blind self-interest, should be enough to make one realize why the clever and keenly observant idealist in Carlin would gradually become cynical, even fatalistic. What intelligent person wouldn't?The world, my friend, is quite often a very nasty place. And George continually strove to use his razor-sharp humor to shred our herd-like adherance to the common myths that cause us to ignore, or just resignedly accept this fact, without being outraged... and to prod us to maybe, just possibly, do something about it.So in short-- if you don't like him, don't listen. It's your very sense of self-righteous "offense" that he's pointing out, to your hard little head. If you can't stomach it, then stick to Carrot Top or whoever floats your boat.If, however, you DO love Carlin's work, and all he stood for, then you will find this release to be an invaluable addition to your comedy/satire/social-commentary arsenal... and you will, not surprisingly, laff yer butt off.
