I can’t get enough of the people from Beartown. Although I don’t think I could live in a place where winter was three-quarters of the year…brrr.Us Against You is bestselling author Fredrick Backman’s sequel to his novel Beartown. Both are MUST reads. That is all my review really needs to say: just listen to me, they do not disappoint.For those who need more convincing, well here goes:Us Against You brings back all the characters we love, or love to hate: Benji (my fav!), Amat, Bobo, the Andersson’s, Ana, Sune, the Lyft’s, Ramona…I can keep going but will stop it there. We are also introduced to politician Richard Theo who is reminiscent of Tommy Carcetti from HBO’s The Wire, the Rinnius’ Brothers Teemu & Vidar, and new head coach Zackell.This novel is about so much more than hockey, in fact there isn’t that much of it actually played. It focuses on the community’s handling of “the scandal” aftermath from Beartown: with politics muddling in and creating even more conflict between Beartown and Hed residents. You are either a Bear or a Bull and you hate the other for even existing. Families, friendships, secrets, the club…will never be the same. Trigger warning: there is a fair amount of fighting.Backman’s writing consists of simple sentences packed with punch: so much meaning with the right amount of build up: his writing style is brilliant!

I can't write a review that will do this book justice. There's so much to it. So many things to think about, so many characters to think about. I'm still in awe. Days later I'm still in Beartown, and I've figured out what's bothering me and has been ever since I finished the book: I don't want to leave. I want to stay and talk about it, I want so much to talk about it. And I'm frustrated and sad, because the only people I want to talk to about it, the people with whom I want soooo much to talk to about it, are all in the book. Over a coffee or a beer or one kind of whiskey. In the forest, in the rink, at the kennels, in the pub. They're part of my heart now. Frederik Backman, you amaze.

Each and every time I read a Backman book, I am amazed by his grasp of humanity and his ability to express what makes us wonderful and what makes us horrible. His characters are deep and broad, his settings are just enough to make us feel at home, and his stories are intricately woven tapestries. I don’t often think that I’d like to sit and share a beer with an author, but this guy makes me want to fly half way across the world and buy him one. If you haven’t read Beartown, you don’t have to do so in order to enjoy this book, but do yourself a favor and do it. You’ll never regret the time you spend on a Backman novel.

It was so sad to be at the end of this story. I lived with the various characters for days and now miss checking in with them each time I picked up the book. And it was really hard not to read the book all at once .Backman has such a grasp of the complexities and nuances of personalities and communities and the impulses that drive or pull us. The story is riveting, sometimes heartbreaking, a gem of a tale. Much to reflect on as we wonder about our own lives: what we do, why, how we see others, the choices we make..I first discovered Backman when a little bookstore had one of his books on display: My Grandmother Told Me to Tell You She Was Sorry. The title intrigued me. The writing style was unique and the story fetching. I then read all Backman's titles that were available. Us Against You was the last and the one I think touched me to the core. Very special.

This sequel to Beartown is every bit as insightful as the original. The author's ability to weave so many difficult and complex social issues into his stories is an artform unto itself. At a time when the world so desperately needs this kind of insight and wisdom, you could not better spend your time reading and thinking about what Backman brings to the table. I love the work of this author and hope it gathers a very wide audience. To do justice to this book, read Beartown first, this second.

I enjoyed Beartown so much that I bought 10 copies and game them to my child’s teachers and close friends. Therefore, I was nervous about the sequel. Would it let me down, after I raved about the first installment? NO IT DID NOT, in fact it was as good or even better than Beartown. Not sure why it’s not in the top 10 books (in terms of New York Times). I am not going to list all the characters and plots, as many of the other reviews did that. I will simply say Mr. Backman has a way with his words, which bring on strong emotion to one’s psyche. I could have read the entire novel in one sitting but made myself space it out over a week. By far the best book of 2018, just like Beartown was the best book of 2017. I pray there is a 3rd installment! I rarely (if ever) give 5 star reviews, but this author is in his OWN class.

Five star novel. I had previously read Beartown and thought it was outstanding. Us Against You is as good or better. Backman tells a compelling story featuring fully developed cast of characters. Novel simulates a sporting event in that the reader experiences the highs and lows of winning and losing. Book is full of surprises as the author brings the reader to the edge of a cliff, retrieves us and surprises us. Witty dialogue. Many unforeseen twists and turns. Strongly recommend both Beartown and Us Against You.I selected "Us Against You" as my book club selection for 7/19/18. Book was enjoyed by all participants of book club. Approximately half of the folks in the book club also read Beartown in preparation for the meeting.Definitely need a sequel. I eagerly await the follow-on novel featuring Alicia.

This sequel to Beartown was great. I found the political story line very intriguing and very true. The idea that conflicts create power and how to make that work for one's personal goals was well developed. His stories always show the best of people and the worst of people all in the same persons. Again, this story was not as light as his other books, but it was just as awesome in other ways.

Grade 9 Up This story of a fateful year in a girl's life takes place in 1960s apartheid South Africa. In order to divert attention away from their failing marriage, Emily's emotionally distant parents invite a family to stay in a camper in their yard. Emily befriends the younger son, Streak, while the older son, Otis, who is clearly brain damaged, becomes almost a devoted shadow to her gentle and loving older sister, Sarah. It soon becomes clear that the boys' father beats them regularly, and that one of his beatings most likely led to Otis's condition. Emily increasingly looks to Buza, the night watchman, for love and reassurance, and he shares folktales and traditional Zulu wisdom with her. The relationship between Otis and Sarah becomes more and more tense, and Otis rapes her. Through tragedy, the girls' parents finally come to a truce. Emily's relationships with the people close to her ring true, and her friendship with Streak has its touching moments. However, the dialogue is uneven. Streak's semi-educated speech, for instance, sounds more American than South African. While the story has emotional power and shows something of the class and race relationships of the time, it lacks a deep grounding in the social context, such as that shown in Beverley Naidoo's collection Out of Bounds (HarperCollins, 2003). Before reading "The Year The Gypsies Came" by Linzi Glass I read all the glowing reviews with a skeptic's eye. Now that I have just completed this book let me rush to join the chorus who sing its praises.This intimate family story envelops the reader not only in the personal, but also in the larger story of Apartheid in South Africa. The novel becomes increasingly engaging as it unfolds. Especially compelling is the relationship between the young narrator, Emily, and the elderly Zulu night watchman with his wondrous tales filled with poetic wisdom.The impressive narrative is tightly woven and moves inexorably forward. Every word, phrase and sentence is there for a reason. How refreshing and unusual it is to find a book that is neither too long, nor hopelessly marred by excessive details.Linzi Glass' remarkable achievement is that through her lyrical prose she presents simultaneously the astonishing beauty of her native South Africa along with its correspondent sadness.Some of my best friends are my books. I often go back to a select few and reread passages that I have found to be particularly memorable. Surely "The Year The Gypsies Came" will join my group of special friends.

Set in South Africa in the early 1960's the story is about a dysfunctional family who play host to a family of displaced wanders. Beautifully written, the tale enfolds a rich carpet of characters and events that have a far-reaching affect on all involved.I was captivated with this book.

The Iris family lives in Johannesburg, Africa. Where you can "fall asleep with the faint roar of a lion or the laugh of a hyena coming across the lake." Their story takes place in the Spring of 1966 and is described through the eyes of the youngest member, twelve-year-old Emily. Other members of the family include mother Lily, father Bob and older sister Sarah.Emily has short dark hair and is a tomboy. She thinks dolls are boring and hates the colour pink. Her only friend in school is Cynthia Wright but her most important relationship is the one she has with her sister. She and Sarah are always compassionate to one another even with something as simple as a game of checkers.Bob comes home to let them know he ran into some 'gypsies' on one of his walks and they accepted his offer to park their trailer at the end of their estate. The Gypsies are made up of Jock and Peg Mallory and their two sons Streak and Otis. They aren't real gypsies but have travelled the continent in their trailer since before the boys were born. Jock supports his family as a wild life photographer. The boys immediately take a liking to the Iris girls spending any time they can with them outside of the girls' school.Another important character is sweet Buza, the night watchman/gate keeper. He is an elderly Zulu man and story teller who walks with a cane and tells stories to Emily when she comes to visit him in the watch house. He is her confidant and surrogate parent. Through him Linzi Glass laces short African tales which offer their own little morals within a few pages. One of my favourite was the story of Ma-We and the honey guide. Others include the phython story, the wolf story, the story of Rolihlahla and the story of two sisters, Yaphansi and Intombi. I would love to read more about Buza and his history.As the weeks pass Emily becomes stricken by the stories Streak shares with her about his family. Her own family doesn't look so bad after all. A growing fear murmurs inside her whenever she's around Jock. It isn't until one fearful night she realizes her fear was misdirected. But by then it's too late and her and Sarah's lives are changed forever.The use of simile is overbearing at times and some of the content is a little more mature than I would like for young adult readers. At the end is a helpful glossary of Afrikaans / Zulu words and Expressions. The Year of the Gypsies Came is Linzi Glass' first novel and she has created a compelling story with interesting characters. I couldn't help but care about them and I could literally feel the tension the author creates for Emily and Sarah when their parents argue. It's painful. The love Emily feels for Sarah and Buza is palpable. I was touched by their relationships. This book is worth reading for its sentiment and hint of African culture. Reviewed by M. E. Wood

Another book that I wanted to read after my high school librarian booktalked it.Set in South Africa during Apartheid, Emily's family is falling apart. Mother and Father rarely speak, and when they do it is just to argue. Mother is upset that Father isn't keeping her in the lifestyle that she imagined for herself, and Father is tired of Mother's browbeating. The only time that her parents seem to stop arguing is when other people stay at their compound. This time it's the gyspies.Not gypsies like one would imagine, her Father assures Emily. This is a wandering family from Australia. Jock, the nature photographer, wife Peg (with her omnipresent snake Opalina around her neck), and sons Otis and Streak. It's plain to see that Otis is simply not right in the head, and Streak is a bit of a wild one himself. Emily immediately takes to Streak, and sister Sarah is so kind and gentle that Otis' ways do not seem to bother her.The family's night watchman, Buza, has a bad feeling about these visitors. Emily spends her evenings with Buza, listening to his Zulu stories. He is the only person who can make Emily feel whole as her family splinters apart.***************This is a beautifully written tragedy. Emily is young enough that her emotions are raw and on the surface and Linzi Glass writes her voice perfectly. In fact there are no weak characters in this story. Each is integral, and everyone grows in some way.I have a bit of an interest in South Africa as a friend of mine lived there for several years, and I have recently aquired a South African penpal. However, I think that this is a book that will appeal to most fans of the written word. It is not for younger YAs as themes of infidelity, sexual abuse, and death are present. It is, however, wonderfully written and a pleasure (despite the pain) to read.

I'm not one to leave super negative reviews, so I won't, the author did put a good amount of work into this, but should have put just alittle bit more. This book disappointed me personally, you may find it good and relevant though. This book contains OK info, but it is written similar to "Wellness Mama", in that it is speaking to women, only wellness mama has pictures.TOP 3 REASON I DON'T LIKE THIS1) NO PICTURES...Not one (real) picture in the whole book. I don't know if they tried to save printing cost, but the only pictures you will find are obscure doodles here and their. It would have helped me (a beginner) to see some step by step pics, or at least what the finished product should look like.2) FOR FEMALES ONLY...So i am a guy who likes organic skin care, does that mean I'm a wimp or something? Probably! who cares... This book has one estranged after shave face tonic that I could find... It does however include recipes for Douches pg 325, Vaginitis Relief pg 326, Breast Massage pg 328, and some belly butters. To be fair this is in a "Female Section", but there is no male section in the book with the rest catering to females too.3) TABLE OF CONTENTSFinding a recipe is narrowed down to the chapters beginning only. Their are 9 chapters and over 350 pages, with only 9 direct page references. Their is NOT ONE direct reference to a single recipe by page # in the table of contents... it will be a headache if you want to use this as a reference or find something quickly.SUMMARYIf you are a guy, don't buy this.If you want real pictures of any kind don't buy this.If you like an in depth table of contents don't buy this.Perhaps, for one of you lucky ladies out their, this is a dream come true, but for me it is $13+ wasted...

Recently purchased four* natural cosmetic books and like all of them for different reasons, but if I would have just one, this is the book I'd choose. I trust the expertise of the author, Stephanie Tourles, a licensed esthetician and holistic skin care specialist, for her rationale of each ingredient and technique. The book has taught me a lot, I'm still reading it and still learning. Every recipe I have tried has been very simple, and perfect.For example: "Pineapple . . . Cosmetic Properties and Uses: Containing bromelain, a protein-digesting enzyme, pineapple dissolves dead surface skin cells, resulting in softer, smoother skin." I used fresh mashed pineapple as a mask and it brightened and plumped up my skin. It was amazing and what could be simpler?I think some people might mistakenly believe that if it's simple and natural it can't be as effective as complicated, commercial chemical masks that are made with toxic chemicals. I don't know how to convince people that simple and natural is in every way better for you, your skin, and the planet. But if a book can help convince a few people, who are skeptical, as I was, then kudos to the author. I'm very grateful to you.*The other three books in order of my favorite to least preference are: 200 Tips, Techniques & Recipes for Natural Beauty by Shannon Buck, 101 Easy Homemade Products for your Skin, Health & Home by Jan Berry, and Idiot's Guide to Making Natural Beauty Products by Sally Trew.

Very disappointed, recipes contain to many ingredients, most that are not common household ingredients and would have to purchase. I use a lot of essential oils and I feel recipes contain excessive amounts of essential oils. A lot of essential oils should not be used by pregnant women and should be noted on each recipe. Was disappointed with shampoo recipes as they called for "natural chemical free shampoo base or gentle baby shampoo", I was looking to make my products from scratch of which some recipes require a premade ingredient.

My main gripe (and it is the same gripe I have with many of these books) is the ingredients list. First, there is the issue of the number of ingredients, there really is no need for more than five ingredients in any DIY skincare product. Second, the price for some of these ingredients, specifically the essential oils can be prohibitive. And lastly, availability, some of the herbs and extracts are not readily available. It all becomes a little much. On that note, if you do buy this book, I do advise beginners not to get sucked into all of the fancy essential oils and carrier oils. As a licensed esthetician and certified aromatherapist, I highly recommend keeping it very simple and make the products using inexpensive and readily available ingredients such as coconut oil, grapeseed oil, lavender essential oil and just use regular distilled water in place of hydrosols and teas. If you really like the product then invest in the more expensive ingredients. If you are looking for a book that is fun and uses ingredients you can find in your own kitchen I recommend Babushka's Beauty Secrets: Old World Tips for a Glamorous New You

I was struggling with the thought of continuing to use harsh skin care products. I stumbled upon this book and had to try it. The results were amazing after trying a couple recipes on my face. I used a recipe that really helped to even out the redness and small pimples in my skin and it actually worked. Every recipe is organic and therefore safe for your skin, there are 175 different recipes for doing different things for your skin, and the ingredients are easy to find and pretty inexpensive. I plan on trying out hopefully all of the other recipes in due time. I do recommend!

BUT now that time has passed, my granddaughter is here, and my clever daughter-in-law found this book, I got one for me, too. I was so looking forward to this book. I have been searching for the piano soundtrack since first seeing the movie, but I could only find single songs. I took a chance, as the web page does not give any sample of the music (just shows the cover). Unfortunately I am disappointed.We all know the songs are beautiful. But, these arrangements are terrible for the amateur piano player. Each song in the book has 3 lines: the melody (goes with the lyrics), a right hand treble clef accompaniment, and a left hand bass clef accompaniment. The part that you play is background/offbeat. Which would be fine, if one were performing in a band and accompanying a singer. But if one is playing casually at home, one expects to play the melody. So that when you play the song, it actually sounds like the song! Instead, it sounds like a pointless mess.

Bought this as a gift for a family member who requested it. Was happy with the arrangements and music in this.

The 2016 United States presidential race will likely go down in history as a black eye for the country. Never has the country seemed more divided. More people, it seems, are voting AGAINST their least preferred candidate as opposed to voting FOR a particular person. These sentiments, of course, bring out the worst in some people, and we’ve all heard those with temperaments of a 16-year-old spoiled brat spat things such as “If (candidate I hate) becomes President, then I’M moving to Canada!” Well, if you happen to be one of those pessimistic grouches that want to trade the stars and stripes for the red and white maple leaf, author Andre Dubroc has just the book for you.This book is meant to be a joke (i.e. you’ll find it in the ‘Humor’ section of your local bookstore). It is, at times, hilarious. I found myself literally laughing out loud many times. Beneath all of this humor, however, is actually a very practical guide. The first couple of chapters of this book, for example, really educates the uninformed novice exactly how to move to Canada. It’s not exactly an easy thing to do. It ain’t like moving across town (if you’ve ever actually moved across town, you know that THAT is not actually easy either. Remember all of the forms you had to sign in the realtor’s office?), and for every real step that one must take to accomplish their relocation, Dubroc manages to add wit and humor within his actual instructions.After Dubroc teaches us all of the steps that are actually involved in relocating to another country (and there are quite a few), he then teaches us about Canadian food, nomenclature, habits, and overall attitudes. We learn that, just like in the United States, people in Canada are diverse, and stereotypes are applied to those indigenous to their particular province. Again, this is a humor book, and these descriptions are probably somewhat true, if probably not a bit broad. We’re guilty of this in the U.S. as well. We’re likely to characterize a truck driver from Mississippi much differently than a professor that lives in Vermont. I should also point out that the author seems to have something against Quebec. Hopefully, most Quebeccians (???) have a sense of humor. With a French name like “Andre Dubroc” you might think that the author is actually from Canada, or has some roots there, but he’s actually from Louisiana.Although this book is peppered with a few swear words, it’s a far cry from the vitriolic diatribes of such hate filled mongers such as a George Carlin or a Bill Maher. This book is also mainly apolitical. Yes, the author takes some shots at the political extreme, but he seems to hit both sides with equal aim. He seems to realize that humor is at its best when it’s not so hate-filled.This book is designed to be, and is, a quick read. Like a lot of humor books, it contains some page filler such as coloring pages to color your favorite Canadians and “word searches” where you can complete a puzzle at the end of the chapter reviewing the new words that you’ve just learned. I found the author to be quite gifted, however, and being that this is his first book, I would love to see more by him. I’m willing to bet that if he had a nice chunk of time to work with, he could actually produce a much more detailed body of work. Since, as mentioned, this book actually contains real tips, I wouldn’t limit this author’s potential to only humor. This guy has some real talent with the written word.If you happen to come across this book and the 2016 election Presidential contest has already come and gone, don’t fret and think that this book is no longer relevant. I’m sure in the days to come, we’ll have plenty of other elections and episodes of grumpiness that will cause many to shout that they will soon change their place of residence. So a book like this will always come in handy.

The Author sounds like He is an expatriate American. He understands the types of Americans that are seeking relocation to Canada and sums most of us up rather hilariously. He also, at the same time, includes very necessary information, right down to the form numbers, needed to start and finish the immigration process. Whether you actually want to move to Canada or just like to threaten to move this is the book for you. It answers questions you didn't know you needed to ask in a way that doesn't make you feel too stupid and gives you fun activities when you start to become overwhelmed by the tasks ahead. A thoroughly entertaining and illuminating read.

So many rated the book as hilariously funny. It did make me smile a couple times but it's certainly far from hilarious. It had some good tips for those that might be seriously considering moving to Canada but there was also some comments that if they thought he was serious would get a bad view of our country. He mentions some terms that you should never say in Canada. I've lived here all my life and hadn't heard of most of them.

Hilarious. There is some good information here, but I read it with absolutely no intention of moving to Canada (quite happy here in Australia thanks very much) and enjoyed it. Andre (Quebecois perhaps?) has a gift with words, and it was a pleasure to read the jibes and jokes. Easy to read in one sitting, I recommend it if you're looking to learn more about Canada or if you just want a light, run read.

It was billed as humorous, yet was totally lacking in humor. It seemed to be more of veiled diatribe in an attempt to keep folks from the States in the States.

A welcome handbook for those who think immigration is simple. Emigration (leaving your country of citizenship), at least from Western democracies, is far easier than immigration (moving legally into a new country). The key concept here is "legal". Other countries have a much more literal view of their immigration law than many US-born Americans imagine.

As a pouty American, I have often thought of leaving the states and living a peaceful existence dangling fish lines through a hole in the ice while boiling down 40 gallons of maple sap into 1 gallon of syrup. We are close enough to the border to visit often but are too lazy to begin the multi-year process of leaving our ice bound home. Thoroughly enjoyed the humor.
