I was skeptical about getting this book bc I needed a new daily study but didn't know anything about the author. I absolutely love the book & have reverted to doing 1 Psalm a day because there is just so much information & ideas to delve into that doing more than 1 at a time prohibits me from truly learning & relishing in the study of the Psalms itself...definitely don't want to stop what God's showing me by completing all of the day's assignment at once. I love how he uses "Yahweh" where it's used in the original. I love how he has kept the original word order when he translated from the original language into English. There are LOTS & LOTS of footnotes which are just packed with necessary information. I've already bought 2 more of his books for when this one is finished.
This is a devotional that will take one through the entire 150 psalms that is both scholarly and readable as well. It allows one to go as deep as she/he wishes. I also discovered interpretive choices here that I had not ever considered before. A real gem that keep me in the Psalms for years to come!
This was delivered promptly and was well packaged. In my opinion, this is a great book. The author has wonderful translation information as well as quality devotional thoughts, and I love his subtitles added to "outline" the various psalms, as they really bring clarity to what I'm reading. His many great short notes are off to the side and don't interfere or interrupt my reading of the Psalms, but they're so great, I always go back and re-read them. I have always loved the Psalms and this book makes me love them even more.
It is a great devotional. My wife and I are going through it as our daily couples devotion. I have had some difficulty adjusting to the authors style. He had directly translated the Psalms from Hebrew so its flow is a bit different. When it gets difficult I open my ESV bible to read it in proper English to make sure I am understanding the point.The notes and discussion for each chapter are helpful
Motyer's fresh translations express a vitality, a delight in God's Word, a robust vision of a people at prayer and worship. I love reading them aloud and hearing the sounds of praise. His short reflections penetrated my heart, convicted me, and drove me to prayer. I highly recommend this treasure.
Great insights - very useful for studying the Psalms, but the formatting on Kindle is awful. I recommend buying a hard copy of the book.
The translation is as beautiful as the binding and cover. The devotional writings at the end of each section are deeply encouraging. Many of the Psalms that are familiar to me have come alive again as I read Motyer's translations and notes.
I so enjoy his style of writing and all the study notes. Several friends have borrowed my book and are now buying their own copy
