I avoided buying this book in the hope that the author's later works would cover the material, but I eventually decided to buy it. I'm really glad I did. It forms the foundation of the later works, and I believe that it's essential reading for practicing or aspiring System/s Architects. It was a challenging read for me because of the content bias towards space and electronic systems (my experience lies in corporate, software and social systems) but I also appreciated the insight into these other system domains.

I even didn't believe that this great piece of art will get in my hands and I'll be able to read it.Very philosophic book and it will be interested for those who wants to see where from started the long way of software architecting.

One of the best System Architecting books out there. Required by USC for their MSSARE degree in SAE549 course. It has a ton of information and would guide you to become a good Systems Architect/Engineer.

Rechtin is no stranger to architecting complex systems. Most of his insights are drawn from his 40 years experience as the chief architect for NASA during the moon landings and a long list of defence and civil positions.The book covers a wide range of topics germane to architects as a field and profession: boundaries and interfaces, information systems, the challenge of ultra-quality, economics and public policy, AI, assessing architectures are some of the sections.The style of the book is alomost memoir-like. He groups his experiences into three main headings with many sub headings. Each item within the sub headings rate 2-4 pages with some heuristic attached. It's a fascinating read because it's a rare glimpse into the mind of someone whose job it was to "keep the entire system in his head". He basically had to answer and implement a system that solved the question, "How do we get three men to the moon and back before the end of the decade?".The two most useful aspects are his in depth treatment on the economics and politics of architecting and a multitude(over 100) heuristics. For instance,"the greatest **leverage** in system architecting is at the interfaces" "complex systems will develop and evolve within and overall architecture much more rapidly if there are stable intermediate forms than if there are not" "profit is a matter of definition and cost is not an absolute" "there is no such thing as immaculate communication"and my favourite"the time in days, T, to obtain an approval requiring N signatures is approximately T = 2^(N-2).The book has been in print for some time and many of the examples regarding designing jet propulsion systems, fail-safe computers for the moon or road networks may not be easily related to accounting, manufacturing or web systems. But as a blueprint for a profession that is growing in importance, it lays an anectdotal foundation that will be hard to match.

Systems architecting is the use of architecting tools and techniques (e.g.,analysis, insights, heuristics metaphors, practice, ethics and modus operandi) to systems (collections of different things which collectively produce results not producible by the components, alone. This is the first and most fundamental of three books on the subject. The second extends architecting to software, progressive modeling, politics, and architects in industry. The third uses the art of systems architecting in structuring organizations.

The Magitech Chronicles is one of my favorite space fantasy series. Chris is continually outdoing himself with the creativity and worldbuilding and scope of events that he builds into each installment. If you've ever wondered what it would look like to have dragons and magic mixed with spaceships and modern technology, this is the series for you. Having the first four books all together in one omnibus is a fantastic value.

I think this is the first time I've read anything with Dragons and Magic and Outer space and wars...though I might be mistaken...story moves along pretty quickly, but keeping track of all the spells, and 'spellrifles' and whatnot is a bit taxing.I finished the first of the four stories in the set...I'll keep going to the end.....

The narrator was very good. He has some really great voices, good tempo and vocal inflections, and I love it when narrators vocalize the small sounds like laughter and whistles.All four stories included in this set are very good and skillfully written.The characters are very individual with their own quirks, and I love that the author didn't bombard me with pages of Backstory right at the start.I have four major detractors that kept this from being a 5-star read (the first one is vastly more pronounced in book one, though it continues to be present in later books).1, significant portions of the dialogue are simply atrocious. Listening to it, I couldn't help thinking, really? Are you serious? Especially with the way the Dragons speak.2, length. Each book is only about 8 to 8-1/2 hours in length. Which is fine in heroic fantasy or other fantasies with relatively low stakes or scope. But with a story this expansive, I would have liked to see much longer books to really do justice to the stories. As they are written, many parts feel skipped over or rushed. Had the author spent twice the time (or even half again), the stories would have felt a lot more complete and far more immersive.3, I just cannot suspend disbelief when I'm expected to swallow that a dragon can be a one-hit-wonder. I don't care how powerful the magic is, nothing short of a god (or a Dragonlance) should be able to kill a dragon in a single attack.And 4, unless it's litRPG (which this book is not), then I just can't take you seriously when characters are referring to spells by level (as in, "normally he couldn't cast a third level spell"). Now, I admit that in the military the relative power of a weapon very well may be denoted by a "level" but in this context I just can't take it seriously.All that said, I really enjoyed these books. I love the way the characters develop and the way the characterization and backstories are slowly revealed over the course of the books.I'm definitely going to be picking up further books in this series. Hopefully book six will be released in audio soon.

Awesome story, a few obvious logic holes, be prepared to be hit in the face with many blatant plot devices.Interesting and fairly unique setting, main characters are well developed and interesting / relatable. Most other characters tend to be 1/2d in nature.Minor gripe for (current price), $0.99, but a VERY noticable number of spelling and grammar errors...

This series is just one dark mess.The books are filled with inconsistencies. In book 2 there is a chapter that seems to have been taken out of the timeline of the previous and following chapters. In another storyline Aran is trained, then goes on to fight battles and then is said to be lacking fitness when he goes to a dojo. Aran can fly against dragons and not get zapped, but can’t outfly a fighter piloted by a mortal. The Voria character is a total mess. Is she a leader or not? The other members of the crew are equally messed up.The author seems to have absolutely no military experience. And just seems to base his military writing on what he picked up on some b-rate TV show. How is a “Private” an officer?Everyone in this series seems to be enslaved in one way or another. And they all seem to be jumping for joy because of it. Seems like slavery is brought to a whole new level in this series. And at times, the author seems to try and justify it.The “gods” in this series seem to be nothing more that over powered magic users, whose influence does not even cover the galaxy. Yet the author keeps inserting “the universe” into descriptions of how powerful they are supposed to be.There are times when I’ve felt that this series was actually written by a number of different people who don’t really communicate well with each other and the group lacks an overall plan. Sort of like a D&D group with a GM, where all of them are writing a story and Penny just wants to kill her character so that she can go get a drink.

Love this series! Can't wait for the next book! It's easy to read, humorous, and has tech, magic, gods....I mean what else does a total geek want?!It's also very easy to read. I'm a relatively fast reader but was surprised how fast I got through the first 5 books. I find I actually appreciate it as I have limited time to read anymore. I used to binge read Tolkien every year for a decade and was happy if I could read all his works in a week...(glad I grew out of that haha).I'm anctiously waiting for the next book. This series is one I could see myself rereading.

Love these books! I've been reading since the first book came out and I've had a great time! Engaging characters with some interesting development arcs, fun magic/tech combos, SPACE DRAGONS!! What more could you ask for? Can't recommend enough!

The story is enjoyable and fun, and the writing is casual and approachable. This is also one of the few books that does multiple POVs well. He changes the eyes through which you see their world from chapter to chapter. Great mixture of magic and technology and deities. Done excellently, and makes you want to keep coming back again and again.

This is definitely in the top 5 books so far this year! I loved everything about it!Emily comes back to her childhood home to see her sister and finally meet her niece and nephew. Her sister tells her that her husband has left her and she needs Emily’s help to keep the house. Emily agrees to stay for a bit. The next morning Emily is woken up by her nephew and her sister is nowhere to be seen.This is definitely a edge of your seat thriller.You know Madi is missing and slowly the pieces start to fall into place and a crazy tale unfolds. Did she run away? Was she killed? And who did it??? I was definitely reading as fast as I could to find the answer. And boy what a ending!!!! This was a fantastic book and I highly recommend it to everyone who loves a fantastic who done it!

I've read a few of Carissa Lynch's books and this is by far my favorite. She possesses a brilliant talent of instantly capturing a readers attention and taking them on roller coaster ride with twists and turns I personally couldn't anticipate. I love her work!The story begins with Emily returning to her childhood home after a decade of avoiding it. Both her parents have passed and she came to see her sister who inherited their home. She meets her niece and nephew for the first time, then after they are tucked in bed, her sister and her stay up late talking. Her sister's last words before they separated for the night indicated she needed to tell Emily a secret. From there the story intensifies and I couldn't put the book down!Great storytelling, fantastic plot, and a tale I won't forget!

Was this book self-published? I’m very sorry to the author for a two-star review, but yikes, this is a mess of a novel. Undeveloped characters and dialogue that’s just beyond terrible. At one point, the main character asks her sister’s husband if he knows where his recently estranged and newly missing wife is, and he responds, “How should I know, I have a new girlfriend now.” Grammar mistakes got by whoever edited this book, and while the plot moved along very quickly, it was so amateurish I couldn’t begin to care— or stop rolling my eyes. I’d normally just let it go, because why trash something when you don’t have to, but I was fooled by all the glowing reviews and want to help others avoid this painful read.

Carissa Lynch once again proved why she’s such a master of the dark mystery genre. She created such a finely crafted mystery that I was unable to stop turning pages once I began reading. Everything - the setting which emanates the feeling of desolation and abandonment; the characters, each carefully concealing their own dark secret; the masterfully-created plot, which imminently moves to an explosive climax - all of these components of a perfect story will ensure that you’ll be on the edge of your seat, reading late into the night until you find out what happened so many years ago in a small town of Bare Border.Emily returns to the town of her childhood after receiving a strange phone call from her sister, Madeline. Everything seems oddly familiar as she arrives; her little niece and nephew win her over at once and Madeline seems fine, apart from her recent separation from her husband. Only, Emily’s sister vanishes overnight and now it’s Emily’s duty to find out what happened to her before it gets too late. An estranged husband who acts suspiciously, Madi’s friend who appears on her doorstep in a frantic search of a VHS tape, an old photo of a girl who disappeared under mysterious circumstances years ago - for Emily, there won’t be a lack of suspects in this highly strange case. Till the very end, I kept wondering if she would uncover the terrifying truth or if the past would catch up with her just like it did with Madi.I can’t recommend “My Sister is Missing” highly enough. It’s written in the best tradition of the dark mystery genre and is a true must read for all fans of the genre. Gritty, engrossing, and impossible to put down it will haunt you for a long time after the last page is turned. Wonderfully done!

This book took me on a wild ride, making me question every single character and situation the whole way through. The tagline on the cover is what drew me in. There were little hints along the way that built this story, so many little things that started to tick off this list of what COULD of happened to Madi. Emily is the sister I would of been, the super sleuth, investigating for myself. I spent most of the chapters making up all these scenarios... mentally keeping track of all the big and small clues...and once I started getting real answers, I was bouncing in my seat to watch it all unfold and fill in all these holes of information that was missing. I was in complete shock at the admissions of some of these characters. This book was a movie in my head telling the story from an investigative mind, and it played out so perfectly. The author took so much care in crafting a perfect crime, and I was left guessing the events of what happened up until the very end.

I was looking for something to help me unwind at the end of the day and this was not it because it kept me on the edge of my seat! The characters are very relatable, the plot is terrifying and realistic, I couldn’t put it down. Do yourself a favor and read it today!

Author Lynch has mastered the art of creating stories that can either be read or listened to. I decided to listen to My Sister is Missing while at work. Let me tell you how good this novel is: I missed work breaks just so I could squeeze in one more chapter. Lee, the “Marble Man” of the Confederacy, who profoundly illustrates the distance between the myths and realities of leadership. Lee was admired by many white Americans for his martial valor and personal virtue. That admiration was given even though Lee lost the Civil War and miserably failed the greatest moral test of the nineteenth century by defending a way of life built on white supremacy and black slavery. His leadership consisted in what he symbolized, then, not in what achieved — or rather, thankfully failed to achieve..Then come several chapters in which McChrystal and his coauthors pair leaders under six headings: Founders (Walt Disney and Coco Chanel), Geniuses (Albert Einstein and Leonard Bernstein), Zealots (Maximilien Robespierre and Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi), Heroes (Zheng He and Harriet Tubman), Power Brokers (Boss Tweed and Margaret Thatcher), and Reformers (Martin Luther and Martin Luther King Jr.). These leaders often exercised influence despite their personal flaws (e.g., Boss Tweed) or the immorality of their causes (e.g., Zarqawi). Their profiles remind readers that leaders are flesh-and-blood people, not statues on pedestals.Taken both singly and in pairs, these profiles make Leaders a fascinating book, biographically informative but also analytically shrewd. As you read each short “life,” you come to realize that leaders exercise an important role, but not in the way that a simplistic definition portrays. Too simple an understanding of leadership results in myths about leadership, which McChrystal, Eggers, and Mangone describe this way:• The Formulaic Myth: In our attempt to understand process, we strive to tame leadership into a static checklist, ignoring the reality that leadership is intensely contextual, and always dependent upon particular circumstances.• The Attribution Myth: We attribute too much to leaders, having a biased form of tunnel vision focused on leaders themselves, and neglecting the agency of the group that surrounds them. We’re led to believe that leadership is what the leader does, but in reality, outcomes are attributable to far more than the individual leader.• The Results Myth: We say that leadership is the process of driving groups of people toward outcomes. That’s true, to a point, but it’s much broader than that. In reality, leadership describes what leaders symbolize more than what they achieve. Productive leadership requires that followers find a sense of purpose and meaning in what their leaders represent, such as social identity or some future opportunity.The key concepts to take away from the authors’ description of these myths are the importance of context, relationship, and symbolism in leadership. According to the authors, when those concepts are taken into account, leadership can be defined as “a complex system of relationships between leaders and followers, in a particular context, that provides meaning to its members.” This implies that leaders exercise a twofold role as “a bottom-up servant to enable action and a top-down symbol to motivate and provide for meaning.”I write this review as a Pentecostal minister and editor of a Christian leadership magazine — intentionally named Influence, by the way. Though Leaders is a secular leadership book, it teaches several valuable lessons that can benefit pastors and other church leaders. I’ll close with four that came repeatedly to mind as I read the book:First, as pastors and leaders in your church, there is no fool-proof, multi-step formula for becoming or producing other leaders. You should have a leadership pipeline and provide leadership training for your staff and volunteers, but you should also keep your eyes open for influencers who arise through other means. Paul’s leadership pipeline was the Damascus Road, after all, not the Jerusalem church.Second, share the work of ministry with others. Too often, we speak of what Pastor So-and-so accomplished at Such-and-such Church, as if he or she accomplished everything alone. But as Paul put it, the congregation is a body in which every member must do its part. So, share the work and spread the credit around.Third, tend to your soul. Jesus said, “Follow me.” Paul wrote, “Imitate me as I imitate Christ.” People will follow your leadership if you personally embody the joy and life-changing power of the gospel. Who you are as a leader is as important as what you do, in other words, because who you are as a spiritual leader symbolizes the life of meaning and eternal significance that people aspire to in Christ.Fourth, and finally, use your leadership for good. Both Robert E. Lee and Martin Luther King Jr. were Christians. And yet, at the height of their leadership, separated by a century, they exerted influence to achieve morally contradictory goals — Lee in defense of white supremacy and King in defense of racial equality. At the end of the day, however one defines leadership, shouldn’t doing the right thing be the most basic test of our leadership?

Reading Leaders: Myth and Reality truly is like a journey. The book examines the concept of leadership from many angles, and refreshingly, reflects on the topic from both a male and female perspective.As a women who has spent decades in a male-dominated industry, I have read many tomes on leadership, all of which left me thirsting for more. Why? Because I could never see myself or my female colleagues in them. Indeed, these authors state, “…the gender imbalance in leadership is both disturbing and unhealthy, and has deep roots in the history of leadership.” Are there no outstanding female leaders? Of course there are, and McChrystal’s book provides the most balanced approach I’ve read to date.Other readers, no doubt, will wax poetically about the merits of the book’s research, the clever method of examination, and the thought-provoking approach. And, as both a leader in my field and an academic, I would agree and applaud the effort.But honestly, the authors had me at Coco Channel. Harriet Tubman and Margaret Thatcher sealed the deal. From both a leadership and a reader’s perspective, I was hooked. The authors state, “Still, the many men, and far too few women, who stand atop their pedestals today reflect the ways in which we derive meaning, usually as a symbol of the values and virtues that we collectively espouse or spurn as a society.”In today’s society, we have a lot of self-examination left to finish to decide which values and virtues we will embrace as a society. Leaders: Myth and Reality, no doubt, will help us on this journey, as we assess the myths and realities of our current leaders. And, while Leaders: Myth and Reality hooked me with Coco Channel, the book challenged me to question my thoughts about leadership in a healthy and constructive way. What more could we ask of the authors?

This book is an excellent perspective on what we should seek from our leaders--and what we should demand from ourselves. There is no perfect leader, and thusly, followers must reckon what qualities are necessary for a leader to be successful and to represent the values that we hold dear. Then, it is the follower's responsibility to help elevate those leaders.In short, leaders are incredibly important, but without followers to mobilize those leaders which will make us all better, we as a country will fall short. If we stand a chance at separating leadership from fame, this is the book to help us do it.Perhaps most importantly, too, we can't always count on a genius, a power broker, a reformer, or some combination thereof to save the day. Leaders are not perfect, but they are perfectly human, as are we all. This book should not only instruct followers on how (and why) to elevate leaders which advance kindness and equality, it should teach us all about the leaders we can become. Whether as a parent, a teacher, a coach, or a politician, looking back at Plutarch should teach us all how to be the best leaders we can--and why our role matters so much.This is a book for everyone--if we can all agree (or at least discuss) what we need from our leaders, perhaps we can change the world for the better. Five stars.

This book is far too much self help and not enough of a manual. There are a few chapters with some light tips like cutting TV and internet out of your life, but I'm not exactly sure that's what minimalism is about. These guys have a pretty particular circumstance in which they were successful in previous careers with the lifestyle that affords and wanted to live more simply where they could pursue their writing passions. So they started a blog about minimalism and it's mostly theory and fluff. It's the catch 22 that comes with any self help. You're learning to be happy and successful from someone who is only happy and successful because they teach self help. Many of these people don't have answers to your particular circumstance, they're just trying to bend the world to their curriculum. I'm giving this two stars because I didn't like it or find it useful to my circumstances. That doesn't mean it's devoid of value though. If you're interested in this lifestyle and what it's all about then this wouldn't be a terrible book. But if you're just looking for ideas on how to simplify your life I have to imagine there are better sources. These guys are more on about how giving up their modern lifestyles help you find your passions, missions, relationships or some such thing. I don't think that's really what I'm looking for in minimalism. I just don't want so much damn junk all over the place.

I recently got interested in The Minimalists and their work and ideas. They're full of good ideas. So with that I decided I'd try diving deeper into their works and it seemed hard to go wrong with something entitled "Essential Essays" particularly when it was remarkably affordable.The book is, as it suggests, a series of essays mostly written by Joshua Fields Millburn and most (as it seems) were written near the start of their journey together. Perhaps it was because I was taken by the short video on their website introducing their ideas that I was primed for a specific kind of book, but because of that I was disappointed because this was not that book. The opening few essays are great and set the stage for a big upheaval in two young mens lives. It is written well and feels like something your friend would write to you in an email or letter. I really liked the start.But over the course of the book the essays devolve into more self-help style "do" (or, to use their term, "must") statements and, while they try to acknowledge that there are lots of ways to be minimalist, the rhetoric gets rather pedantic at times. That's too bad, because the intent is definitely positive and the message is a useful one. Another issue with the book is that, being culled from other works, we see a lot of repetition. By 2/3rds of the way through you're a little tired of hearing that Joshua and Ryan left six-figure jobs and were working 70 hours a week. It might not be so if you read one of these essays on its own, but as a collection its poorly curated for a book form.The basic premise is good, the ideas are pretty solid and, when not speaking at you but to you, the book has enough redeeming qualities to read. It's a short collection and very reasonably priced so still worth picking up.

I like The Minimalists — a lot. They’ve changed my life. As for this books of the “essential” essays cultivated from their blog, it was just all right. They are short and good for reading one or two before bed, and I think it may be too easy to dismiss some of the essays without noticing that each one is often just a brushstroke in a broader picture. And that broader picture is awesome. But, honestly, I get more out of their podcast than I did from this book. Grade: B

While I really liked Everything that Remains, I was not a big fan of the other books. Partially this is because a lot of these essays I have heard repeatedly on Podcasts and seen on the site before. It seems like they articulate the same things over and over again, which is great for new people to their message, but gets very repetitive to those who have been following along with their story. I actually stopped halfway through on this book because I simply wasn't getting value from it.

This book as well as the other 2 books they've written related to Minimalism put the words on something I've personally been thinking of for quite a while. They're 2 young fellows but very mature for their age. They understood the core of what a real fulfilled life is and the "Five Values" they came up with for living a meaningful life summarize very well what most people aspire to be deep down inside.I've read a lot of books in my life but this one was the right timing for me.Great job guys!

I have been a minimalist for a few years and always enjoy Millburn/Nicodemus' views. I find myself re-reading their books continually to stay on the minimalist track. I know it's a catchy word for 2017, but it honestly makes for a peaceful life.

It's difficult for me to read books that contain lengthy chapters. This book was perfect for me. Each post is 1-4 pages long except the 30 things learned in 30 years part. Also quite cool. I have been inspired over the past 2 years to minimize the mental and physical clutter in my life and focus on what's important to me: my family, experiences and relationships. I'm working on cultivating my passions in life.

As someone who had to figure out what to do with my 800 T-shirts when I got married 30 years ago, I always knew I had a greater attraction to "stuff" than the average Joe. As my mother has aged and turned into a bona ride hoarder, I realize that I should probably start paying attention and pare down my own non-essential items. The ideas about cutting out other things that suck up time and energy without promoting personal growth are just as useful. Now... For the challenge of implementation!!!An easy read, well written and motivational. I recommend!All the best,Jay
