Mosaic Knitting

From Library Journal

This is the book that put slip-stitch knitting into the knitting history books. Walker coined the term mosaic knitting, and her definitive book on the subject was first published in 1976. This revised edition includes 116 new charted mosaic designs to complement the 157 charted designs featured in the original edition. Large-scale black-and-white charts, each with an accompanying knitted sample of the design, leave the reader to choose appropriate colors. This is not a project book but one that will appeal to the adventurous knitter and knitwear designer. Highly recommended for large public libraries and textile collections.?JZCopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Barbara Walker engaged in great effort to assemble and create the many colorwork patterns in this book. Knitters seeking colorwork patterns that don’t require the manipulation of two or more colors per row should rejoice in her effort. The book, sadly, went out of print until the mother-daughter knitting team of the Zimmermans brought it back through Schoolhouse Press. Kudos to them too!Mosaic knitting charts look confusing, but Ms Walker explains them clearly. This is a book no knitter’s library should be without. It offers a wealth of creative opportunity for beautiful crafting in the art that is knitting.

Great shopping and shipping experience. I just started slip stitch knitting. This book has so many wonderful designs. The black and white charts are difficult to visualize, but I imagine as I start knitting them, it will become easier.Very good instructions on how to follow the charts.Charts and shadow designs are well organized. I.e by number of stitches so it is easdier to find a design for a given stitch count.Using this book has taken me to the next level of knitting and designing.

Like her other books, Barbara Walker provides both photos and charts of every pattern. There's an introduction which I assume explains mosaic knitting, didn't read since I read it decades ago in a library book. I bought it for and appreciate her charts which save me the effort of making up a pattern, charting it out, knitting a swatch, discovering it won't work (bad esthetics, wrong stitch count, floats too long...). She's done all that heavy lifting. Not every pattern appeals to me, that's to be expected, but there are a large number of winners. I'm currently using it to knt a sampler blanket in garter stitch. I especially like her border patterns.

I'm a big fan of Barbara Walker and her many books, most of which I have checked out of our local library repeatedly over the last 20 years. The technique of mosaic knitting (slip-stitch, two color knitting) is an easy way to incorporate color into any knitting project, adding a personal touch to even the simplest of garments. The original Mosaic Knitting book was published in 1976. When my library lost that book and I couldn't get it on interlibrary loan, I decided to purchase this book, printed by Schoolhouse press in 2008. All of the same patterns are included, and they are clear and easy to use. However, a whole section of the original book is missing--the projects and their instructions for incorporating mosaic patterns into garments and household items. The original book, for instance, had directions for making a man's tie and also one for table place mats. I've looked for these project directions since then, and can't find them, which is why I purchased the book. I was very disappointed when they weren't in it. There are some extra mosaic patterns (magic squares), but they don't make up for the lack of projects/instructions. So I give the book a high rating for the mosaic patterns, but wish that I had known that it wasn't the whole book as originally published.

I'm new to knitting, and don't do stranded colorwork....yet... but this is so easy to learn. The results are beautiful. I've practiced different designs making cup cozies, which are fast and useful.

If you have fallen in love with mosaic slip-stitch knitting, you will adore this book. With a wonderful, educational introduction, the remainder of the book is filled with hundreds of unique mosaic charted patterns.

Note to the knitter looking for line-by-line patterns for sweaters and socks, complete with color and yarn recommendations: This book is not for you. It contains no projects of any kind, but simply an in-depth exploration of a technique that can be used in the creation of an infinite number of original designs.Barbara Walker, whose treasuries of stitch patterns and charted designs are the mainstays of every designer and every knitter who wants to advance beyond fuzzy garter stitch scarves, has given a catchy name, "Mosaic Knitting," to a method of producing multi-color fabric without the tedium of stranding, Fair Isle or intarsia. All it requires is the ability to knit and slip stitches. In exactly 13 pages of clear, intelligently-written text (a Walker hallmark), she tells you everything you need to know, and takes you through the knitting of a little 8x16-stitch sample. That's it for instruction, and it's enough. After that, the books consists of page after page of mosaic stitch patterns, with a chart and a black-and-white photo for each. This new edition, for which we have Schoolhouse Press to thank, also includes a huge previously-unpublished collection of "Magic" mosaic patterns, so-called because of their 4-way symmetry. They alone are worth the price of admission.About those black-and-white photos. I have heard this book criticized for not showing the patterns in color and for not showing them in use, that is, as part sweaters or other garments. I like it the way it is. Walker allows knitter/readers to see the patterns in the abstract, without any distraction. With this book and a couple of the classic how-to-knit-a-sweater books (Knitting Without Tears, Knitting from the Top Down, The Knitting Workshop, Knitting in the Old Way), any competent knitter could happily make a lifetime's worth of original and beautiful hand-knits.Thanks again to Schoolhouse Press for making this new and improved version available. Now if somebody would only publish a new edition of June Hiatt's Principles of Knitting.

If you have the wear-with-all to work with mosaics, this is the text to get.The patterns are intricate, but Barbara Walker makes it easy to understandhow to complete them. If one is working a long piece, it does take patienceto continue however.
